BUBBLE CLONER VEG ROOTS

XLR8 had skillfully noticed that the taproot on the Power Skunk seedling was looking a little dark. He was 100% correct about this, but I had noted that I didn't think it was anything to worry about, since the upper root was very thick & white, and it was in the lower part that was very thin that appeared darker.

I still don't believe there's a problem, but when I checked the roots earlier, I noticed that the root had basically "fishboned" where that thin dark portion meets the thicker lighter portion of the root.

By "fishboned" I'm referring to how hydro roots develop these branches that resemble a fish skeleton. So, it actually looks like the seedling is starting to develop that structure already.

It's still a little tough to see, but here's a pic:

Also, where I only had one root coming out of the cube and into the res yesterday on the clone, she now has four nice, thick roots going into the res.

Here's the pic from less than 24 hours ago!

And, here she is today:

Happy Harvests!

OH yes, they are DHunters! HUGE buds. Impressive. Thanks for the shots of the roots, those are yours right? lol

Yeah, the roots are mine, but I'm sure they'd look much more impressive if shown between the crotch of some hot chick! I need to get a model for my plants! Actually, I need to get two models, cuz' the first one's going to me and NOT the plants!

well, I disagree with that statement :) I'd rather see just the white roots :cheertwo:
I have a question... when you are limited in height for the plants, do you ever tie them over? As in... no room up top to lift the lights...

I understand - just the roots for you! :)

Yes, I LST the plants all through veg and flower to try to optimize the use of my space.

In the below pic from a few days ago, you'll see some binder clips on the sides of the waterfarms:

I use those to tie & move the branches where I want them. I'll also do some supercropping, but I don't supercrop after the 3rd week in flower.

:goodjob: Thanks again for the info and photos. :)

I noticed my water (aero) today was 5.5 ph, but the tubes for the air stones felt a little slimy. I sure hope that doesn't mean bad shit in my water! My girlies were born on 8-11-11. They are still quite small. I'm using the Flora line , in a very diluted mix (seedling recipe on the bottles)
Looking at your earlier photos, it looks like mine are on task. I have not read this whole thread yet, but I plan to. Great info and trouble shooting stuff.

No problem, Greenie!

What was your PH at the last time you checked (before today's 5.5 reading) and when did you last check it?

Assuming your girls look OK, most likely there's nothing to worry about since some of the nutes do make the airstone & tube feel a little "slimey" but, do make sure your res is light-proof, cleaned regularly (not just changed!), and not running at too high a temp.

If pythium (root rot) was/is setting in, I would expect to see some drastic fluctuations in PH and your girls not looking happy at all!

BTW...Do you have a journal up? If not, feel free to post some pics here! :)

No Journal yet. Yesterday was first day in the aero. I used distilled water. then added the nutes. PH was at 6.5. I added the PH DOWN... to 5.5. Today, it was back up to 6.5! So I brought it back down to 5.5. I have three photos so far, the roots look well. But my plants were FREAKING tall, stretching for the light. With the help of GG7, I lowered the lights to right above the plants, and they stopped stretching. I also have the girlies deep in the hydroton (spelling?) to try to make sure I don't break their necks off...

Here is Bubblegum #3, too tall and scrawny (Never have thought skinny girls looked appealing! LOL)

Here's a better shot of what I mean by tall and skinny!

Here's some more shots from today. I only have two 4' grow tubes above them right now.

Here are the Bubblegum triplets... Born 8.11.11

Placing the light right above the girles, stopped their stretching. I should have taking photos since their "born on" date.. Next time!

You should have plenty of light, you just need to keep the light as close as possible, without stressing the plants.

Light intensity is based on the "inverse square law". So, at twice the distance, you'd be at 1/4th the intensity and at 4x the distance the light would be 1/16th the intensity.

I guess I'm just comparing it to what else I see in these forums. It's only two 4 foot tubes, grow lights. The area is all Mylar, but only two sides really reap the benefits of those.
I also have the lights on 24 hours. (read that was good as seedlings..) And not really sure when to cut it to 18/6 . YIKES. I'm kind of worried to send the girls into bloom mode cutting them back? should I go one hour a day back until they are at 18/6??? :hmmmm:

yeah, I know, I am NEW :)

There are definately a lot of people with a lot of real nice lights here on 420, that's for sure! But, you can certainly veg some plants under what you have without a problem. Again, just keep the lights as close as possible.

You don't have to worry about the plants going into flower if you cut back to 18/6, or you could do it gradually, if you preferred. Maybe lower by a couple hours a day, just to try to minimize stress, but I would think stress is minimal, anyways.

The plant is triggered into flower NOT by light cycles, but by dark cycles. Once it gets down to about 12 hours of uninterrupted dark, then she'll start to flower.

Some people veg at 24/0 through the entire veg cycle. There is good data that under 24/0, the plants develop more rapidly than under 18/6, since they're getting 25% more light at 24/0 and they do not require a dark cycle in veg.

I happen to veg at 18/6 the whole time. I do this simply to help minimize temps in the cab.

I used to argue that it also costs less, but considering the plants develop quicker under 24/0, you could veg them for a shorter period, so I don't know how much electric it would really save, but lower temps equates to less ventillation which equates to a cheaper fan and less electric to vent, IMHO.

do you have a small fan blowing on those girls? it will help strengthen those skinny legs and help them support themselves. flouros are fine for vegging, seeds and clones, that is what I use as well, you can almost have them touching so long as they aren't too hot, otherwise you'll cook them.

i was in the grocery store today and was lookin at light bulbs and i was thinkin, if you were to put a red bulb in the cab during veg would it help, or if you were to put a blue bulb in the cab would it help flower?? i dont know, i think of crazy shit lol... just a thought.. :tokin:

I don't think putting in those colored "party bulbs" will help at all, becuase it's doubtful they're the right spectrum or intensity. BUT, your 6500K CFL's have more blue spectrum and the 2700K's have more red spectrum.

Generally, you want to veg with the blues and bloom with the reds, but there are advantages to, and many people will run, a "mixed spectrum", so they'll have, for example, (6) 2700's and (2) 6500's in flower (or something like that), and in veg, they'll have mostly 6500's with a couple 2700's mixed in.
