DIY Stealth Cab, Hydro, LED & Multiple Strains in Small Space - Oh Boy!

You have done a freaking awesome job with those girls! :goodjob:

That first picture looks like your plant is sitting on a pair of green, 10 Point Buck Antlers! That's insane!

My girls love getting their flush, they always look so happy afterwards. I can't remember, is this your first application of Overdrive?

Geat job man, I love seeing LED grows, I may be using some next round ;)

*oops, looks like you answered my question in my journal, thanks!

Thanks much, DIME! :thanks:

Actually, she's a twelve-pointer! :)

Yes, just started the Overdrive today, which is why I mentioned the "3-week countdown". Directions are to use Overdrive the LAST two weeks BEFORE final flush, then flush the last week. :slide:

PIC UPDATE

Sorry I was too busy earlier to get some good pics, but was focusing on getting the flush and res change done, then getting done the things I should have been gettinig done during the flush and res change! :)

I've been talking more about the Waterfarm Haze lately because she's really developing nicely in spite of only getting the "hand-me-downs" for space & light from the AK. She's a real interesting pheno that's got long straight colas, with extremely long (like 6"!) cola leaves:

IMAGE_428.jpg

Rather than a series of buds spiraling up the cola, like with the AK, she's formed these large clusters of buds all around these many branch junctions. When they all fill in and develop, I imagine each cola top will look like a single HUGE bud that's about as fat as a beer can! :grinjoint:

As previously mentioned, I did a flush & res change today on the AK that included lowering PPM's, discontinuing the Big Bud, and starting with the Overdrive. There will be one last res change, again lowering nutes, next week, then it's a flush and a water diet until she's ready to harvest.

It looks like her colas are getting bigger by the minute!

I do have a question maybe someone can help with...

I've been considering doing two harvests on the AK, taking the larger colas first, then letting the lower bud sites develop more, then harvesting the rest with the Haze.

Everything I read about doing multiple harvests says something like "harvest the flowers from the larger colas....".

Does this actually mean that, if I intend to do a second harvest, I should NOT cut the colas and just harvest the buds off of the colas? Or can I just snip the colas wherever I want, hang 'em, and let the rest mature another couple of weeks?

I may opt against a second harvest in favor of starting the other haze ASAP, since she takes so long to finish, but interested in understanding this none-the-less.

Thanks & Happy Harvests!

K

Krip I can't help on the second harvest thing, but I wish you could learn how to take pictures. jklol
Everytime I see them I need to wipe my chin. Great job.

Thanks, PBR! :thanks:

After I finish spending the rest of my money on setting up my grow process, I can start saving for a good camera. All these pics are taken from my cell phone that doesn't even have a flash! I'd be dangerous if I had a decent digital camera! :)

I'm not sure how a multiple harvest would be... It just seems like it would stress the plant a bit even though it's at the end of her life, don't ya think? I'm just guessing though. Maybe just wait a few more days, it can't hurt. Patience is a killer though haha ;)

It's funny you mention patience with multiple harvests, since a lot of the articles on multiple harvests mention the importance of patience and in not harvesting early. I'm not worried about stressing the plant, so much, I just want to do it right. I guess whether I take the whole stalk or just take the buds, it's gonna cause some stress, but, it does appear I can cut the whole colas.

Let me help make us all W1ser on this practice :) :

Most new cannabis growers want to pick early, because they are impatient. That is OK! Just take buds from the middle of the plant or the top. Allow the rest of the cannabis plant to keep maturing. Often, the tops of the plants will be ripe first. Harvest them and let the rest of the plant continue to ripen. You will notice the lower buds getting bigger and fuzzier as they come into full maturity. With more light available to the bottom portion of the plant now, the plant yields more this way over time, than taking a single harvest.

Harvesting marijuana is a lot of hard work - but feeling the heavy branches as you cut them will make it an exciting day. Just be sure you have given the plants every day they can use to create the best they can produce.

Premature harvesting is a big mistake because the quality is impaired and even the quantity can be much less.

Home growers on the medical program may do better if they harvest more than once - in order to allow the parts of the plant that have been in the shade, to get some light - so they can finish ripening before they are harvested.

This is done all the time, it is called staggered harvests. Take the solid top colas first and let the lower flowers ripen and grow until ready. As with the top colas, look at the tricomes color ratio to determine when to harvest. I do this every harvest and increase the yield by 25-40% by harvesting over a 3-4 week period as the flowers size up. Cutting off the top of the branches sends the cell elongation and division auxins to the lower parts of the plant and will cause the lower buds to swell and grow. Your harvest can be extended by several weeks with this method.

Often, the tops of the plants will be ripe first. Harvest these and let the rest of the plant continue to ripen. You will notice the lower buds getting larger and more resinous as they come into full maturity. The overall yeild can be increased with a staggered harvest as the lower branch buds are receiving higher amounts of light and more attention from the plants internal chemical processes.

I still don't know if I'll want to do this on the AK, but it's a good possibility. I just keep weighing the staggered harvest versus giving the Haze the whole cab to really get lots of light and space in her last few weeks, to just harvesting the whole AK at once and putting in the Hempy Haze from veg, since she takes longer to finish.

I'm not sure which way I'll go yet, but I like to be familliar with any technique that can give higher yield and better meds! :grinjoint:

OOOOOO mannn, that thing is a monster compared to the door! Geeze, you'll have to build yourself a rope ladder just to trim that thing ;)

Thanks, W1sest, and sorry I missed this post earlier. Looks like I was responding to other posts the exact minute you posted the above.

Yeah, she is a monster! It's been quite a challenge getting her in/out of the flower side of the cab without breaking either her colas or the colas on the haze.

I'm looking forward to getting some good harvest pics. The one pic I'd love to get, but can't seem to get a good shot at, is the largest cola that is literally 20" of solid buds up the stalk. It's LST'd somewhat horizontally laying towards the back and I can only get parts of it in a picture. It'll be much easier to photograph when it's cut & laying on a table!

I've been watching episodes of Ax Men so I can learn how to take her down safely & I got my chainsaw ready! :)

That is one Weird looking plant! lol Looks like its growing strong though!:goodluck:

Morning Mr Krip! Is that gap on the right side of the AK the space where the haze resides?

I can't think of any problems with a staggered harvest. Impatient growers should take a side cola first and smoke that while waiting for the plant to finish instead of taking down the whole plant.

I've been wondering, if you harvest a plant and it's at different stages of ripeness, how come I never seem to notice that when I'm smoking it? I jarred the colas separately, in theory they should be better smoke but I can't say I've been able to tell. Just one of the mysteries of our plant. :peace:

Recently I've been able to tell the difference, but not until practicing a lot. ;) I think it's really subtle though. Funny this came up, because I'd been vaping a lot of popcorn bud the last week or so, and thought about the idea of being able to tell the difference. I grabbed a monster cola bud that was nicely mature compared to some of the popcorn buds I'd been dealing with - and noticed the difference pretty clearly. My wife, who didn't know I did this, commented right away that something was different and that she felt it was a bit better bud than what we'd been having. That's an extreme though, I think, and I wouldn't normally notice much difference...

Blue, nope...the gap on the right is from be LST'ing the tall stuff on the right, that could only grow vertical against the wall, to the left and/or back. But, this opened up a lot of space on the right, and now all the lower buds there are developing pretty nice.

Maybe the reason you don't notice the difference in ripeness is that you're stoned at the time??? :tokin:

420 DAY PIC UPDATES!

Happy 420 everyone! I hope you all enjoy the day and hopefully, everyday will be 420 Day for all of us! :grinjoint:

Since starting the Overdrive only yesterday I haven't noticed the buds getting visibly bigger (it's only been a day!) BUT, when I checked on the girls today, I was a little puzzled as to why the lights were so far away, so I lowered the lights for the first time in quite a while. It occurred to me that this is because the buds are getting heavier and the colas are drooping even more, in spite of my tying everything back up just yesterday! :morenutes:

Also, it appears trich production is really peaking now and just about all the buds have this "powerdery" look under the LED that's really beautiful. :yummy:

Next week, I think I'm gonna start taking samples.

Here are the pics from today:

That show is awesome! You'll definitely have to pull out the chainsaw to tame the beast. and chop her down.. Thanks for the knowledge bomb above on staggering harvest, I wanted to quote it but thought taking up another page of your thread would be mean ;) Happy 420!!

A happy 420 and a great big :thumb: for your grow!

It's just like I was saying in my journal, the sugar gnomes are hard at work dusting your plants while they sleep :)

You'll probably see that Overdrive kick in quick with hydro. Even without it, your plants are gonna finish just fine!

Thanks, DIME! Yeah, these buds are really starting to look great and I'm not too worried about them finishing at this point. According to the breeder, they'd be done this weekend, anyway, but the extra couple weeks, I'm sure, will do wonders! :morenutes:
