Decoding The Holy Grail: Terpene & Cannabinoid Retention: Decarb to Extraction

I'm still throwing things out there when someone says something that reminds me. About grinding the buds.....I asked a while back if anyone knew if there was enough cannabinoids inside the plant matter to go after or are they almost entirely on the outside. I think I knew the answer way back but just don't recall. Anyway, that will answer the grinding vs shredding vs broken up buds debate I would think. I know we get waxes and chlorophyll from in there so is it worth it to have to deal with those? If there is any significant amount of thc in there I want it. But if it's a fraction af a %....maybe not.

My problem with shredding is that it's tough to not lose a lot of tricomes handling it. I solved that problem with a grinding tweak but by grinding you obviously have more filtering problems. So are we making stock or just using broth? lol

What is the best way for me to reply? I'm now understanding that others don't want me too? Why am I not able to respond? Thanks Teddy.
The site has been great, as well as Teddy
PM Kicknit. He will help u out

You guys are teaching me lots....
So the tcheck....how well does it work....

We will let you know in a week! I have not had a way to test the tester until now. Part of this trip is about testing hardware; namely the tcheck & the Nova. If the tcheck works as advertised, I can't imagine doing without it. The nova....probably....dont know... but probably just a convenience thing. But at the same time I can see how it guarantees a good decarb by controlling the temp & time so well. Again, we shall see. More on tcheck in a minute.

Excited to see all the results

I have a harvest of CBDutch treat that's in the fridge now drying

I may do some oil and have it tested as well as the flower...to see how they compare
$150 but would be a good test I think

Here is an email I sent tcheck this week. They are well aware of what we are doing. Their reputation is definitely on the line. I made sure they knew that. lol. mean??? no, not really. NOT IF THEY HAVE FAITH IN THEIR PRODUCT. I had already approached them with the project a while back to feel them out so to speak. So far they have been great. I had one go bad on me so that follow up is what part of the email is about.

Hi Kelly,
I hope your confidence level is high in the replacement. I have no way of knowing, just that the readings are definitely different. We will start testing in MN on the 16th. I will send the other tcheck back to you before I leave town. I don't think it's accurate so no point in taking it. I think there are already 16 pages of comments leading up to these tests on 420 Magazine. That's just people getting in tune with what we are doing next week. The test results will be posted and then the real discussion will start. It's going to be interesting. A lot of people awe waiting to see how the tcheck performs.-
----their reply----

Confidence is high!(no pun intended )

You can always run a test, and do that "lastdata" trick and send it to me to see what it says.

When interpreting lab results vs. tCheck- make sure you remember that tCheck measures and combines all the cannabinoids- so add them up on the lab results too before comparing :)

That's really exciting though and I can't wait to see what happens!! What all are you guys testing?

Sincerely,

Kelly

Scorpio, it is spectrograph teck as a lot of things are. "It works by shining a specific wavelength (color) of light through the oil, then measuring the amount of light that makes it through. " It's pretty common and that is the way the lab does it, or 1 way. I suspect the lab just has a way better photo cell. Beyond that....over my head. lol

Interesting, I didn't know that , like mine is a TLC or Thin-layer chromatography

So many tests.....love learning it all

Hey guys what if my oven only goes to 170C instead of 110C, what should my decarbing time be now?

Leave the oven door open a little , wedge something so it does not close , Nd make sure you have a a small portable oven thermometer to gage the temp with the oven setting, you might need to adjust the over to get your ideal temps for the decarb, it's how I made beef jerky before I bought a dehydrator ..

That man right there is a cook...lol

Seriously???? that's 338f! That's kind of high for a min temp. I say don't use it. Take an electric skillet and put any cooking oil in it. Put the buds in a jar with lid just snug I set in center. Set your temp. Do not trust the thermostat!!! check it with an instant read and check it every 20 min or so. I prefer oil because it holds temp better than water and doesn't evaporate. If you are doing a lot of bud this will not work. Buds can't be above oil line...or find a clever more shallow SAFE container (Corningware oven dish comes to mind with foil cover...just don't spill the stuff in the oil) Anyway, I would feel better if heat totally surrounded the material. sous vide ???

A bit off topic but I wanted to tell SweetSue thank you so much for your suggestion on the making of topical cream I made for my father in law, he tried some rso to see if it would help and he freaked out on a low dose, ( he's 75 ) he had knee replacement on one knee and still has pain and the other knee ( bone on bone ) he didn't want to do it cause it didn't work out too well. He applied it and shortly after he called me and said "God bless you this is amazing " I just wanted to share with y'all.. Good vibes and health to all those here to help and thank you for the knowledge you choose to share with this community. I pray you all grow amazing medicine to make life better.

Hey HealthFreak. I have been wanting to give beef jerky a go for so long, now...do you have a good infused recipe that has worked out well for you. ?

Decarb gizmo report,
At close to two hours I noticed that the indicator light was green. The canister and buds were still rather hot but not so hot that you could not hold on to the container. I was surprised to find the the buds rather moist. I decided to let them cool down in the machine.

After about an hour I checked and found some condensation on the inside of the lid. When I removed the inter cover and checked the buds, they were crispy dry. It is possible that I managed to not have the inter lid seated correctly by the time I had the black lid in place.

Warm soft buds can cool down to some rather dry buds, but this was more pronounced.

There was some shrinkage and they were a brown color.

From the pictures, you can tell we are talking about popcorn. I loaded a bowl that I have not finished. It has more kick than it should.

Brown popcorn is my new friend. The high is pleasant and intense. The Volcano is next [;>)

Hi everyone -- Could someone maybe do a brief summary of the objectives of this thread and the results so far?

Is it to try to work out the best method of decarboxylating and then the best method of extracting so as to maintain maximum THC and terpenes?

Sorry, and not to be critical, but I've ready 239 posts so far and it looks like things are still in the planning stages, is that right? Or have some kind of recommended procedures started to emerge?

Thanks!
