Dark Devil Auto: A Community Grow Record

Nice. Have a happy harvest!

I have two of Canna's & Nismo's "Devil's Carnival," though. That's Dark Devil Auto x Carnival (or Carnival x Dark Devil Auto)? First-generation, I think, so they should both be photoperiodic. I'll be back to the "normals" after the autoflower grow, assuming the carbon filter and fan are still functional at that point. Have you grown that one, by chance? If so, can you give a quick paragraph on it? If so, thanks. If not... keep the thanks, lol, you've got a good bit of credit ;) .

TS, I’m sorry I missed this. Ironic, wasn’t it? :laughtwo:

I left a link to the Devil’s Carnival thread over at my grow journal. :hugs:

Harvested my first dda. Funny thing was went to chop her and a flower had evidently been half broken and cured perfectly on the vine. So while i was trimming her was able to take a smoke break of her durring the trim sesh. Bonus :laughtwo:

Harvest went smoothly yesterday.

Sweet and sticky, just what we want. :slide:

My guesstimate is in excess of 3 ounces. Not bad for a peripheral plant, using extra space in the veg tent. :blunt:

Uhh... Which one, lol? This one and your hempy journal are about the only threads of yours that I've even tried to keep up with recently.

Thanks. I kept running into the Carnival one instead. Too much activity here, lol - good for the forum, but I'm feeling kind of old. Used to be able to keep up... somewhat.

Has anybody played around trying to make a photoperiod version of Dark Devil? You know, not just F1 hybrids, but a bonafide photoperiod version? I have a lot of projects on deck and my grow area will be expanding soon, so this keeps popping into my head as a serious project. Just tossing around ideas.

Is there any interest in this sort of thing? I wouldn't want to embark on such a journey alone.

How would you go about that @Ganjagrowergu?
Well. I have a specific father plant in mind. It's called Trailer Trash Betty, old outlaw strain derived from AK47 that was designed to favor males for breeding. The males pass along an 8 week (shorter times being possible) flowering time and heavy frost.

The first offspring will be photoperiod which leaves open the possibility that I may not have to do much beyond that cross if the F1s seem stable enough, maybe make a few batches of S1s of those. Otherwise I would then move onto making F2s and pheno picking first for the photo sensitivity and second the dark purple coloration. From there I could make S1s or continue the process further until eventually backcrossing with Trailer Trash Betty to put the vigor back into the gene pool, lock in the photo sensitivity, and call the project finished.

You know my current grow situation, Sue... well, it will be growing in size and scope immensely over this next year. Looks like I will have at least three more areas to grow in. I bought 10x Vero 18 cobs in 3000k today for an array build. Wife says I get to have the entire room for growing and building lights... plenty of room for clones and pheno hunting. The universe totally just dropped this into my lap the other day when I was feeling sorry for myself, lol.

Well let that teach you a lesson about being morose. :laughtwo: There’s always a silver lining. Always. :hugs:

I understand just enough that your post made sense. Lol!

And BOOM! :thumb:

That's a cross of DDA, I have like 6 of those..lol

To get a true photo of DDA I'd assume you'd need regular DDA seeds, but even then I'm thinking the male DDA would still produce auto seeds, just regs

Can you even get regular DDA seeds? I haven’t seen any, but I wasn’t looking.

I have several hybrids as well. I am kind of pushing towards something more stable with the autoflower traits all but blocked from history.

There are none. I did look. It would be trial and error. The only way to make it into a photoperiod plant would be to add genetics and pheno hunt for the most DDA dominant individuals. This could be done in as little as 2-3 years

Or start from scratch with what one knows about her lineage and try to replicate the breeding of her makers, sans the autoflower. This option could take a decade and still not be the same.

I do tons of research about hybridizing plants and from everything I can find, this is the only way without a true Male DDA. The F1 straight to S1 thought is more for science in that I am curious about phenotypic variations within an S1 line.

I guess my idea is to build a cultivar that is nearly identical in effect and growth structure that can be vegged for 6+ weeks to increase yield indoors and be grown outdoors for a full season... just imagine an 8ft Dark Devil with fist size buds.

Perhaps I read too much

I wanna try a DWC DDA, all my DWC are bigger anyways
I've been lingering around @Rifleman 's thread. He grows some beautiful auto girls in 5gallon buckets. Makes me dream of DWC, unfortunately that is a lot of water to spill in an upstairs apartment, Lol.

I don’t know much about breeding but Sweet seeds says DDA is Big Devil XL x a purple kush Auto. Could you not just cross Big Devil XL with a purple kush photoperiod? Might would take some hunting, but should that get you close?

A 7oz DDA is possible in one of those buckets too. :blunt:

Your first cross with a photo plant will give you a mix of photo and autos. It'll take a couple more grows and crosses to get rid of the auto trait completely.

But I thought the autoflowering trait was recessive :hmmmm:. If so, shouldn't all the progeny from the first breeding be photoperiodic? Assuming that the photoperiodic parent didn't have one of the pair of autoflowering genes in its genetic makeup, of course. I'd expect them to all be photoperiodic but to carry the (recessive) gene. The progeny of that generation would be a crapshoot (autoflowers and a mixture of photoperiodic (some "pure photoperiodic," and a greater amount that were still photoperiodic, but carried one of the recessive autoflowering genes) ). Er... I think ;) .
