Colombian Gold Grow: Come Learn With Me How To Produce Your Own Seeds!

Just did my lights on check in the Honeymoon Suite. Time to move the boy to his new secluded home. For those who have never pollinated a plant here is a photo of a pollen sack that is probably hours away from dropping pollen.

Here is the only other sack I saw on the plant in the opened and ready to fire position. And this one was ready to fire. I plucked it off before it could pollinate the girl. This tiny bit of pollen will be going onto a single bud on my NL X DDA cross plant. Applied carefully with a small artist's paintbrush. The buds around the treated bud will be misted lightly with water. I will take a photo of the bud to be pollinated prior to the procedure. Then when/if the pollen is viable I will be able to show how to tell if your buds have been successfully pollinated.

So if you study the photos closely you can see that the outer "shell" is made up of 5 panels. When the pollen sack is ready to release it's pollen these panels raise up exposing the pollen chambers inside. When you see the panels raised the sack is either ready to pollinate the buds or within hours of being ready.

Awesome post beez ! Wicked pictures regarding the male parts and pollen dropping.

Can’t wait to see the process of you apply the pollen to the females ! :goodjob:

It's really pretty simple, Dutch. I collect pollen, in this case on a business card. I am applying the pollen to a single bud on a NL X DDA cross for two reasons. I enjoy growing out crosses that I've made, and I also want to verify the pollen is healthy and viable. So part one is completed. I have collected way more then enough pollen to dust a single bud.

Next I select a bud on the NL X DDA plant. I want one down low on the plant. No sense wasting a primary bud when seeds grow as well on the bottom buds too. So I have selected this bud to pollinate.

This next step is crucial to your sanity. Somehow mark the bud or buds you've pollinated so you can always know where they are. As the plant matures it is often difficult to locate the seeded buds. Here I've used a piece of one of the craft pipe cleaners to mark the bud pollinated

And finally, with a very fine artists paintbrush, as delicately as possible, I apply the pollen to the pistils. Prior to this I covered this bud with a small ziploc baggie and lightly misted all the buds around the one to be pollinated. Water ruins pollen and this is the only bud I want to pollinate. When stray pollen (there is always stray pollen) hits the other neighboring bud sites the mist will render it useless.

And really that's all there is to this. If successful in about 3-5 days the pistils will start to change color and shrivel up. In 10 or so days you'll start to see the start of seeds forming. On a very small bud such as this one I would anticipate 15-20 seeds.

Finally, the pollen spewing boy has been put in quarantine downstairs in the dining room. Over the next week or so I will be harvesting pollen from him. Enough to pollinate well the Colombian Gold female when her buds are big and plump. He is under a tiny 23 watt screw in LED full spectrum light bulb and that's plenty of light to keep him in full production mode.

As far as male to female pollination goes that's about it. Always remember that the pollen is tiny, very light and dry and if a gnat farts near a pile it's airborne looking for a pistil to pollinate. If you don't want seeds everywhere be extremely careful with this stuff. When you look at a little pile of pollen like in the photo above that is enough pollen to produce probably a thousand or more pistils. So although it may not look like much pollen there are literally thousands of pieces of pollen there.

Hi beez quick question!

I did my 2hr outside the dome this morning.
Before:

And after the 2 hours they looked like this:

Now my question is .....I have put the domes back on for another hour and I plan to let them out again for 3 more hours. If after the 3hrs is up and they look the same should I leave the dome off? Or try a 4hr cycle with the dome off. First? Thanks for the Input !

Dutch if they were my girls I would clip off those lower leaves. The plant will use energy to try to keep them alive where it could be using the energy to produce roots.

And with the bottom leaves clipped off, and with them looking pretty much the same after 3 hours outside the domes I would wash the domes and put them up till you need them next time.

See I don't leave a whole lot of leaves on my cuttings and the ones I leave I trim half off of most of them. These two are putting out a bunch of roots now.

Ok I’ll snip off the lower leaves and trim the upper leaves in half ! I’ll post some photos.

Once the 3 hrs is up and the trimming is done I’ll hopefully be able to stash those domes !

Thanks beez!

That sounds like a plan, Dutch. Just don't take the domes off and not check on them.....lol When I make the decision to take the domes off for good I still check them every couple hours (RETIRED) to make sure they still look good. But when you wake up the next day to no changes they've started rooting at least enough to survive and the roots will continue to form and grow from then on. In your setup you'll know you've got a good system of roots started when you see new growth.

So Dutch, what are you cloning? What strain or strains are these?

I had my fingers cross just now when I pulled out one of my plants that for the last several days has been threatening to show it's sex as a male. I pollinated a very potent GSC Thin Mint plant with Northern Lights pollen some time ago. This is the second attempt at finding a girl. The first I grew out was a boy. Anyway, upon close inspection I have to hope that old saying (Third Time's a Charm) holds true because unfortunately this is a boy too. Very good looking plant too with excellent structure. I want a girl!! My compost pile is going to be big! :rip:

So those cuttings are from my Early Miss.

She was sold as an Autoflower from CKS but after growing her along side the WW autos I already harvested it was determined that she was a photoperiod. After vegging for 80days I flipped her and her mutant sister EM2 over to 12/12. I took the cuttings down low off the EM1 when I was lollipoping her at the beginning of the week since her stretch has stopped.

Ok so I trimmed the cuttings and took the domes off now for their 3hrs ! If they look good after that domes are staying off ! And I will monitor them until bed this evening and hopefully all goes well!

They look perfect. So these cuttings are from a plant that is well into flowering? Well into flowering is longer then 2.5 weeks for me.

Amazing detail on the photos Beez! :goodjob:
Thanks Archie......I do okay with close-ups but have a heck of a time with full plant pictures. Must be the camera!

They were taken on day 17 of flower so just entered week 3
So they are going to have to re-veg once they start growing. Expect single bladed fan leaves and some freakish curly Q leaves. Eventually they'll grow out of this phase.

I dislike taking full plant photos as well. Not only is the quality fantastic and highly detailed, but it is invaluable to anyone who wants to learn how this plant works. Much respect.

Great tutorial beez! Like Archiweedies said, great detailed pics and great idea to wet the nearby buds with water first. I wonder if any of the pollen I got off the Haze Xtreme is good. It didn't work on the AK though. I think it got damp in the freezer.

I'd be worried about that male shooting pollen downstairs and it floating up to the girls or coming up on your clothes, but I sometimes worry about the smallest things!

I still check them every couple hours (RETIRED)
Ohh, you're retired!
