Cape Mountainside Bay Garden: Transkei Sativa Soil Grow

I hope this works. Thank you LR and Shed for the idea. These are meranti dowels and bridal tulle.

Jeez!! Wtf are those things!! :thedoubletake:
Nomadacris septemfasciata (red locust). They live sub Sahara. The good thing is they can't jump, but they still have a large freaking appetite! :lot-o-toke:

Yeah not good for bait. Was going to suggest encouraging birds to your garden but realised only a few will eat them. Don't even make good bait. Almost as bad as parktown prawns where I grew up. Hectic. Yours looks properly squashed. Good job.

Happy Garden Day Saffers! Today I sowed the following seeds in trays, to companion with my Cannabis plants. It's my first time using seed trays so I am excited! :hippy:

Update on Holly. She is growing new leaves under her bridal veil! That was quicker than I expected. The other two plants are looking fuller but are only on 3 nodes at a month old. They look gorgeous and green so I am sure they are going at a good pace for their built in clocks. The mystery purple plant is also looking healthy. I have a Double Wild Durban from seed that @Lerugged gifted me, that is also doing extremely well. I had a Transkei from LeRugged that popped but it's not doing well so far. I think the root may have shriveled. I will give it a day or two before I recycle that pot for another seedling. I have a second LR Transkei in paper towel. I'd love to have his Transkei for a comparison with my other TK origin seeds. That will be my bundle this year. I simply don't have the space for more unless I do another in a pot. LR gifted me a cross between the Durban and Studley (his robust Transkei male), which I would also love to do. I may have to prepare another large pot  Thank you so much LR! You know how much I love the local sativas.

Today I topped Molly and Polly. After the awful fimming that Holly got by the locust, she is bouncing back strongly. Here are in order Molly, Holly and Polly, the tops and then the DWD. I think DWD has been eaten by something, possibly a spider mite.

Molly and Polly had their first night out of the screens last night and I doused them in a commercially branded garlic and canola pesticide. Polly was munched before I opened them up. They both survived the temperature fluctuations and another day. I'm pleased with progress generally but this is going to be a labour of love, hand rearing these outdoor plants. They need constant attention at this stage. Soon they will be vegging vigorously and hopefully less maintenance will be required. When I sprayed them this evening, a cloud of aphids flew off the unscathed one. I will have to watch that closely. There are no crawlers on the leaves yet and I hope to keep it that way. I'll buy ant traps if necessary too. I have a more potent muti than the Margaret Roberts which I must make this weekend. It has cayenne, marigold, pennyroyal, canola, casteel, onion and garlic and bicarb and works pretty well.
The discolouration on the leaves are just reflections from the pesticide spray. Otherwise the plants look well nourished. All they have had is water. I am happy with the performance of the soil mix to date.

Why? The screens were working so well! I would leave them under the protection until they outgrow it, and have enough leaves to spare when/if they get eaten.
Hi Shed. Yes, you are quite right. The tents had gotten too tight because the plants have reached the same height as the dowels. Also, the munching of Polly happened when she was in her tent. A tiny grasshopper must have gotten in I reckon. It was easier to apply the garlic and canola with them out of their tents. I am keeping a very close watch for now and if I feel they would be better back in tents I will buy longer dowels on the weekend. It will of course really suck if I go there in the morning and find locust damage. I am hoping for the best of luck.

This is an update of all the plants so far. I have one more seed to sprout, an heirloom TK from LR (@Lerugged).

Order:
SSL (Studley x Sticky Lady if I am not mistaken LR?)
DWD (Double Wild Durban also from LR)
MP (Mystery Purple)
Adopted 1?? (belongs to housemate)
Adopted 2?? (belongs to housemate)
Holly (who was fimmed severely by the locust)
Molly (my favourite from seed)
Polly (looking very lanky... suspected male)
Vegetable seedlings

I did a four pronged attack on the bugs with BT, DE, Beauveria Bassiana and then the garlic and canola spray. It stressed DWD out but she is recovering.

My housemate asked me to give his plants some tlc because they were stunted and necrotic. They have bounced back nicely.

My new project is to make a structure to tent of my vegetable seedlings. I don't want to run into the same trouble as my teepees that were not tall enough to allow for vegging out.
