Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg & More! CFL's - LED - HPS

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

Thank you Jam!
I'm going to wait a couple more weeks then. Doesn't cause any issues with space or additional lighting. They are under the LED's, and that's where the clones are going. Plenty of space right now.
On the HPS lights, another member stated that using lower than the maximum setting on them can decrease the life of the bulb. Do you find that to be true?
Based on that, I think I would just lower them up and down as needed. :cheesygrinsmiley:

:thanks:

I honestly don't know if that's true or not, although I suspect it probably is; but I can tell you what I do and why its immaterial for the most part whether it does or not. All the lights I've ever seen advertised come with a 1 year warranty (I've only had one bulb fry sooner than that after 9-10 months & got a new one free.) As one progresses in this hobby he accumalates quite a bit of excess shall we say, bulbs included, lol. I think it absolutely insane to not have an emergency back up lighting plan. I learned the hard way just recently that includes a ballast. Nothing more annoying than to go 3,4,5 months only to have bad luck at the wrong time cost your pride and joy become at best a run of the mill grow.

I keep backup bulbs for both my MH and HPS. They start to go down hill in lumen output after a couple of grows and lots of people don't use them after a year anyways due to diminished light output. Any hoots, I simply rotate the bulbs...use this one until I need another then put it w/my nutes in the box as a back up and put the back up in the shed unless its been used a whole lot. In which case, depending on temps and the strain I'm growing and how the plants in the main flower chamber are looking, I actually use it (600w) down as close as 7-8 inches above the canopy to get every last bit out of the light. On some Indicas LSTd nicely with an open canopy, it really works wonders on the density of the lower "popcorn" buds, which of course means better/bigger yield. In a perfect world, as long as there's a back up, I wish I could blow the bulbs every 10-11 months; would save me the $60 bucks or so a year buying replacements, lol. But alas, they're pretty hard to over work ime.

I place my light (MH for first 3 weeks) anywhere from 9-12 inches above the canopy at the flip. When they actually start moving upward, which might take a few days to a week, I set it at the original height (9-12") and use the dimmer as it grow up towards it. This is prob over analyzing things, but it works for me in controlling height. MHs, if cooled, can get pretty close w/o bleaching the girls and whenever they get to with in 6 inches (by then I'm @ 50%) I put the HPS in at anywhere from 12-15 inches above depending on what I'm growing and if the stretch is done (hardly ever is) or how far into it I went. I then just use the dimmer if it climbs to within the 10-12 inches. I defol a bit after 3-4 days of no vertical growth and flush then use Gravity full dose with just ph'd water 3-4 days after that. I raise the lights to 15" for Indica's & 18" for Sativas when I water w/Gravity. On the next feeding (I water, feed, water, feed so twice a week they get some kind of drenching) I put the light back where it needs to be and leave it there for the duration using the dimmer again only on two more waterings of Gravity @ 1/2 strength & 1/4 strength over the next two weeks.

This is what works for me and does decent although there's some REAL growers out there that do some outstandiing things w/far less effort. I'm currently setting up another small area so I can try the Cap'n & Sling's set up on a smaller basis. I think I might really like that style of growing.

That one pic with four plants and you mention a 400 watt, my question is this the flowering lamp you will run? Im super super interested in seeing some of the lower wattage hps lamps and what they can do. I'd love to do a 5 by 4 matrix with 400s.
Looking fwd. to the upcoming weeks

Hi S1lingblade,
yep...that's 4 under a 400W HPS. I will see how they do with the light coverage as they grow. I am hoping to get another 400W system this month, but the way January started for me it may be pushed to next month. If I find there isn't enough light to cover all 4 as they grow, I always have the CFL's fixture next to them with only two plants under it.
I will keep LST'ing as needed to keep the height down as much as I can.
Have fun!

Excellent information John! I have a back up bulb (HID), but I really need to get another HPS.
It's interesting how you use the power on the HPS to control height, I have not read that before.
I sure hope we get to see one of your grow set-ups soon!
:thanks:

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

I too have been gifted some scientic soil by the same wonderful member. I am waiting on it to be delivered and am also waiting on some new beans so am thinking I will try total organic on the next round....... Have to do some study on organic nutes and need to find more info on the scientific soil. Their site is very limited and the only organic nutes I know of is the FoxFarms grow big. I don't think the rest of their nutes are.... If you know where I can find this info please let me know.......:thanks:

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

Sure seems like there was some info on Reg's ? thread on this Dennise. Can't remember exactly, but I will check that and see what I can find out.
If you do a "search forums" on the journals in progress thread, you should be able to pull something up by typing in Scientific or scientic (however that is spelled. LOL) soil.

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

Lady Dee Scientific Soils isn't totally organic. It's a ready to use / just add water soil mix. You're right, they don't really have much info on their site so what I've done recently was read as much as I could find on them. One thing I've found is that Scientific Soils Premium Growers Mix was previously called Supersoil Premium Planting Mix which was a product of Scotts. From what I've read I'm assuming Scotts is associated with Miracle Gro.

Scientific Soils - H.N.Distribution
Supersoil Premium Planting Mix

I also believe I've pin-pointed the problem I was having with my 1st two attempts using Scientific Soils. Though it doesn't state this on the bag or brochure, I believe it shouldn't be used as a stand-alone soil.

How to Use:

Apply 2 to 3 inches over planting area and mix with native soil to a depth of 6 inches.

The above "How to" was found under Supersoil Premium Planting Mix but it makes sense as I did end up topping off RACHEL SUAVAY (White Widow X Skunk) with Scientific Soils after running out of City Compost without completely filling the pot.
I'm sure you remember what a beast he was after transplant. Why couldn't he have been a she! LOL

Pay strict attention to the print of the following transplant post.

New City Grower 1.0

I plan on using it again on my next plant with the above method. I hope this helps.

The research took me awhile but I broke it down to a quick summary so you can check & see if my facts are correct. I may have misunderstood something & if so someone let me know...

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

SweetLeef had mentioned something on a thread about turning a smart phone into a macro photography tool using a laser light lens,
this intrigued me....of course. LOL Here's an instructable I found for the idea:

$10 Smartphone to digital microscope conversion!

I'm looking at trying to get that laser light lens straight over my phone camera lens, we'll see what happens.

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

Because I think it's important to see mistakes as well as successes, I need to show you an error.
When I had the clones in the bubble cloner, every now and then I would give them a mist of water on the tops just to keep the leaves hydrated... what I failed to think about was the water in the mister was straight from my tap. I have softened water. Here's the proof on the salt in softened water. This is why I was killing my house plants for years watering them with my softened tap water. The grey you see on this clone is salt build up. Grrrrrr

Pretty sure it's dying, but I'm going to hope for new growth. LOL

I did cut another clone from the plant in flower just in case this is a dead one.

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

I'm not much of a water drinker, but I do a lot of cooking and use my tap water and I'm a Pepsi-holic with lots of ice (ice made from the tap water line). Gotta wonder what all that salt is doing to my system now.....stomach issues. hmmmmm:hmmm: Think I'll do some research on that issue today.

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

I did the research when I first moved here and saw how nasty the water was and you are not going to like what you find. I wash clothes and take showers in the water but I won't even cook with it and don't have the ice maker hooked up even....:thedoubletake::thedoubletake::thedoubletake:

I found my answer. I found this info and I think it's what I will be doing:

First, if you use a salt-based water softener and don’t want to change, I suggest at a minimum you connect the salt water softener to your hot water line only. This way you’ll have soft water for showers and washing clothes, but for all your cold water uses like watering plants and drinking you won’t have to worry about high sodium content. This also dramatically reduces the amount of salt water being washed away down your drains. - See more at: The Hidden Risks of Softened Water |

Re: Cannafan's Perpetual Grow White Widow-Master Kush Reveg and More! CFL's/LED/HPS

When I tried to put a filter on the water lines it clogged up in less than a day. I got the water report from the county and it stated there were ONLY 9 contaminants in the water but all were under federal limits. Well that made me feel much better. NOT!! My fella boiled it, ran it thru coffee filters twice and you could still see the muck in the water and the filters both times had a white yuck in them. There is nothing short of finding where my original well is (which is what we are going to do) and hooking it back up to the house that is going to make me use the water and then I won't until I have it tested myself. I do go up in the hollow sometimes to the creek if there has been a lot of rain and collect spring water and it is awesome but I am pretty lazy and only do it in the summer when it's not cold.......:circle-of-love:
