Homemade Garlic oil spray for the win!
Here's what I concocted for the Aphids:
3/4 C. vegetable oil (internet says to use mineral oil, I am out at the moment so I made do)
4 Heaping tablespoons of chopped garlic from a jar with it's juice
1 C. water
2 drops of plain ol' dishsoap (unscented)
I let the garlic sit in the oil for a couple of hours shaking/swirling the jar a couple times. Internet recipes say to use fresh garlic, chop it up and let it soak in the oil overnight. I figured because this garlic is already minced and sitting it it's own oil that it didn't need to steep that long.
Strained out the garlic through a fine mesh strainer and cheesecloth (if you don't strain this extremely fine you will clog up your sprayer)
Mix the water and dish soap into the jar and gently swirl it around. (shake it too much and you get suds. LOL) You want to swirl it around a bit always just before spraying, oil and water don't stay mixed and you want to be sure it's combined as much as possible when spraying.
I located some of the critters and took before pics and after dousing them. They died almost immediately when hit with the garlic spray. I checked several times to be sure they weren't moving those spindly little legs, and they were dead. dead. dead.
Here's some pics (you know I had too. LOL)

This one is tending to something that looks like an egg sac or a really fat newborn.
After spraying:
It's dead.
This one was ready to fly.

It died sticking sideways. LOL
I believe this is a very tiny juvenile leafhopper.....I think...regardless, the garlic spray killed it too.
So, I will watch the cuttings for the next few days to see if they suffer any ill effects from the spray.
Not sure you can do this during flower due to the garlic, but I'm thinking if you only have to spray it once or twice maybe it wouldn't have any long term effect on the taste of the buds?
This is a very concentrated mixture, so it can probably be diluted with water to make it not so strong. I'll be testing it further while mother still has tomato plants in the garden.
