Are any of you creative oilers working with preservatives for topicals? After reading up on manufacturing methods I keep running across fairly complicated requirements for preservatives. It really hit home when I watched a video that starts with the maker spraying iso from a spray bottle and then wiping down bowls and utensils. The formula for determining how much of which chemical to add for preservation are complicated on manufacturing sites, but for home lotion makers, this explanation is nice.
"Phenonip and Germaben II, and Germall Plus are actual preservatives. They inhibit the growth of microorganisms, yeast and fungus in lotions, creams, etc. If one is making products for resale, the FDA requires that you put a preservative in any cosmetic that is not a soap. If you are simply making products for your personal use, you do not have to include preservative. However, if you choose not to preserve your lotion or cream (or other formula) then you must treat the finished product as a perishable food item. Either use it up quickly or store in the refrigerator and use within two weeks."
Preservatives in lotion - Why You Must Use Them
I had not given this much consideration until reading about how serious this problem can be, especially for sick people. The amount to add to the mixture seems to run in the 1% range.
Probably a good idea to start a new thread for this, I'll have some pictures in a few days and can start one, unless there is a better way. Too bad that the poppy guy didn't get a chance to defend himself, I am curious what he is doing, sounds like making some sort of crude heroin or morphine. Hope he learns about that stuff early enough to avoid falling into the pit. Thanks for being such a nice group, people enjoy hanging out where there are friendly folks.
