Seems like some kind damping off.
Damping off is caused by a soil fungus in a wet surface environment, and attacts the stem right at the soil surface. Some ways to counteract this is to have air movement across the soil surface to help the surface dry a bit. But, worm castings have been scientifically proven to counteracting fungus itself.

Oh boy!
These autos aren't growing well at all. Using a 100 watt Vivosun. They suggested 50% brightness, which I did. I just put it up to 75%. |Last year I had other plants in veg and they did fine at 100%. The stem is dying at the base.

It's 0.03-0.03-0.03 which is nothing. Lost a month so far :( .

go buy one on these at the lowes .. hp pro mix..

use from beginning to end of grow.. ad your own nutes.. i like drain to waste..

i was just filling up 4 seven gallon smart pots..

Hi scotti .. I think the issue is Miracle grow has a continuous ...time release nutrients ...in its soil right from the beginning (Enriched with plant food) which is not good for cannabis seedlings it causes the soil to be to hot for the seedling causing nutrient lockout and deficiencies from the start (yellowing).. Also what is your watering schedule like? water Ph?...How close are you running your lights and what type... Leds... hps?.. Also in the end it could just be bad seed genetics ..Just tryin to find out what your grow environment is like so I can figure out the best way to help ya out! :)
Thanks. HP. Vivosun LED's. Been using them and miracle-gro for a few years now with success. They recommend 50-75% at 24 inches until veg. I keep the soil moist every other day with rain water. This soil has 0.03-0.03-0.03. It was the only one Home Depot has.
It worked great last year and grew 9 out of 10 seeds with my Cafe Racers.

I am baffled.

looks to me like you dont soak your soils and drain out 20% of the water n feed soln.. hence dry spots inside the cup
and the plants starts drying and dying.. looks like dry spots on the surface.. be worse under the hood..

Your not alone Scott, here's some stem rot. My compost and the stuff I collect is real world. No steam, gas, or chemical sterilization so I deal with it. Lots of old time funguscides where just plain nasty! Funny thing is, when I use it in the ground it gives me less trouble. Damn stuff is everywhere!

No problem anytime...So you said you add rain water every other day what's the Ph of your rain water? You might be suffering from unbalanced ph or over watering.. If your worried about the soil dying out too fast for the seedling put a clear solo cup on top of the cup with the seedling to act as a humidity dome instead of using water to keep things moist. Also how is your drainage at the bottom of the cups is the water easily able to run out? ...If your using the same setup and grow method you used before and had success with it then it could simply be a bad seed this round.

Yes it was the same system and the bottom of the clear solos are pierced at the bottom. I used humidity domes and slowly opened the holes on top to acclimate the plant.
Will presoak as @deltadubie suggested. Will look for more soil that's nute-free and keep seeding soil which is also made for cloning. Have 4 clones arriving soon, Photos for outside grow.

Thanks all for your help. Crossing fingers for next attempt. Lost a month as it is.

your going to look for a soil still.. lol i tell you should grow in this .. i never use humidity dome put the hatched root seed in bear cup with hp pro mix water .. no feed 1st time .. then use general hydroponic ferts.. 5 or 6 bottles will do ..

maybe you need to add in Cal Mag... stops bud rot.. much more painful than stem rot..

Happy camper this morning. My most excellent plant is starting to turn. Touch and go for awhile as it was finiky to begin with. I can't wait to hit it with sunshine and soil! Skippy has been awful vocal as of late, wish he would open up about his intentions with cannabis. I got a dug well, last thing I need is more mineral and calcium. Never mixed coco and pro mix but wan't to try.

Just opened up the grow box after 30 hr of darkness and the 2 GT3.0 plants have grown 3-4 in. +++. Had to secure the unruly plants down. as I am trying this low stress training for the first time. They are on 11/13 light schedule now as it is supposed to help with restricting their growth some. In a supper soil mix of my own I have been using for 3 yrs with the addition of a small amount of good old fish fertilizer, a little Ca and Mg, and some bat shit. Now for the long Sativa Flower to finish. Will start the A5 Killer Haze in another month outside in order to bring inside after these 2 finish there thing. Pic to follow in a day or two......

i take your talking about indoor grows? outside you got the sun fighting fungus and other bugs in the environment..

so uv light perhaps..

Yes, indoors. Outside you usually have at least a slight breeze which also helps.

But the castings certainly aren't limited to indoor use.

do you make your own warm castings ? kinda messy i dont have the room for that operation ..

guess on a cottage or small farm i would be into going the organic route.. but maybe not farming is back breaking work!

i just heard i got arthritis in my spine walking the dog is tuff enough...

Yes, i make my own castings. I have a series of stacked, 7-gallon containers in my basement. Total footprint is the size of one container. Not much effort to it, really.

I collect kitchen scraps and dump them in the top bin once a week and then cover them with compost or dried leaves, add a few tablespoons of minerals and call it a week. Do it all again the following week.

I harvest one bucket every two months.
