There’ve been times, especially in my evening when nearly all of the USA is asleep, when the site gets super fast for me. At these times I can feel how powerful the new software driving the site is. We’ve all experienced some of these moments since the upgrade and it bodes well for when the speed issues get identified and sorted out.

At around 1:00 AM CST, I noticed the site running like lightning. :slide: It's startling how fast it is.

Morty's Photographic Journal loaded in less than a second.

THIS PAGE loaded faster than I could scroll through it.

The same with THIS ONE.

wish I could confirm - but sadly no. And Rob, not complaining as such, just trying to provide info.

Both those pages linked to there don’t load currently for me at all (all other downloading & browsing outside 420 is great, Chrome on iPhone), after 1 minute of loading only about 10% of the images had loaded in. Not sure how my time matches up with Graytail’s. The first link Graytail shared makes things interesting because it’s from last November and was just as problematic as the one from yesterday (Gray’s second link). That could be useful info for the developers.

But hey - I agree Graytail, I had one of those moments a few nights ago - and it was awesome!

:Namaste:

It's still running at speed for me - a breeze - snap snap. :)

And I chose those two because one was old and one was new. :thumb:

And I'm on a laptop in Chrome running Win10.

All of the above are fine. Thank you.

:passitleft:

Like mouser, I, too, have trouble reading the gray font. It needs to be black. I can't find anything in my accessibility settings to turn gray font black on a website I visit.

Something we as members can do is enlarge the text. In Chrome the three vertical dots in the upper left open a dialog box. About halfway down is the zoom function. It may help those needing more contrast as well as those needing a larger typeface.

that is definitely easier to read.

That tip could go on the tips & tricks thread (I’ll come back and link it). New Website Tips, Tricks & Discussions

Although I do think it’s good if the Admins consider a global shift to a more universally accessible font.

also - AK mentioned gray fonts too as an issue and I wonder if thats the ‘visited link’ and secondary font that’s everywhere gray - like the usernames in the quote windows. That is very faint to read.

Hi Amy - I can test some for you if you wish.

Thanks Oldbear - I’d gone to bed already!

That’s great Gazoo
unfortunately for me it’s largely the same as yesterdaY. The first link maybe better, it took more than the minute you mention but at least they all did load. The second link (current ‘eye candy’ thread) after 1 minute the top 3 images we’re still only 20% loaded (Some of the lower ones were in though). I tested my connection straight away after and numerous other media heavy sites loaded instantly so no issues at this end...

Same here. Yesterday afternoon, I was screaming fast. Today, back to 28k modem. But I should say not as bad as yesterday morning. I was at 1200 baud yesterday am.

I want the staff to know, I'm not complaining, just relaying issues that I see.

I want them to know I understand some of what they are dealing with...... I know they are working hard to get it all "tweaked" to work great.

Sorry to hear that Amy, hopfully this will be a non issue soon

Something else I noticed when I loaded the first link above, it loaded the page in less than a minute
but did notice as I scrolled down, near the middle of the page it took a second or two to show the images
as I moved past them ?

EDIT: Also just Remembered/Realized (last night) I cleared out a bunch of old Movies and large files on my Hard Drive
(something like 50+ gig) so maybe my computer just need some extra space to cache the images ?

It's possible. Malware, or disk fragmentation can also slow down your computer dramatically.

The sans-serif type fonts are easier for me to read online.

@420
Ok folks - this list is IN ADDITION to the previous list I collated. It includes anything raised or re-raised since that post (9 days and 14 pages ago). SO if you read this and think there’s something missing - please check the earlier post (linked below) because if it’s there, it’s probably (hopefully) on Rob’s list already.
First collated list: Brand New Forums & Gallery

:nomo:

Bugs/issues
  • Watched thread email notifications:
    • The fix/workaround for email notifications (the go to thread>unwatch>watch with emails>) has only been successful for some members and not others
    • and can apparently be broken as soon as you add a new thread (which has been reported to make all previously active email alerts stop functioning).
    • From what I can tell, lots of people have had this problem of losing email notifications on their previous ‘subscriptions’. It gets mentioned in passing a lot - so lots more instances than are being reported here (maybe you’re getting support requests I don’t know - just thought I’d pass that on).

  • Checkboxes next to watched threads list too small on phone: I’m putting this on the list again because Rob, I have to pinch and zoom (a lot) to make them big enough to click in on my phone ;)

  • Readability of site fonts: This an issue of accessibility.
    • The current fonts are not friendly to those with various vision impairments/ variations (hard to know what to call it because folks are different!), including those with neurological issues and simply those with ageing eyes.
    • The greyness of the fonts is difficult to read for some and not readable at all for others - this is particularly the case for the visited links and secondary text pale gray font.
    • A global change in font has been suggested, Trebuchet has been mentioned as better, and others suggest sans-serif fonts are better.
    • The general consensus among those having problems is that the current font is “too small, too thin, too faint...”.
    • This comes from users of desktop PC’s as well as mobile devices.
    • If a global font change is not a popular option, the ability for users to choose a font within the site framework might be a way to go if the software can accommodate something Iike this. (This could’ve been in the ‘requests’ section but I decided it’s more important than a request because of the accessibility issue.

  • Page load issues: (this is along section because the posts carried over many hours, days and many pages 24-? - I’m attempting to summarise, it’s a bit of a ramble!)
    • Starting late last Thursday(ish) numerous members were reporting huge wait times for pages to load.
    • is worst with image laden pages but happens on pages with only a few images too.
    • The conversation went back and forth nearly all weekend. Many having this issue.
    • Sometimes the loading takes so long that some images never land at all.
    • While this is happening replying, liking, composing, quoting all get hung up.
    • Most of us were holding off reporting this until the image gallery background processing was happening but are under the impression that has completed now and we are still having the issue.
    • Friday night and into Saturday (EST) was a particular time of slow site response all around FYI (folks were having trouble just posting responses, replies etc. and images were not loading into pages at all for many of us).
    • This all continued into Saturday evening and Sunday.
    • It should be noted that within this, on Saturday evening sometime, one or two folks reported blazingly fast browsing where images loaded instantly on even media rich pages (I’ve not ever had this experience since the site migration - but Graytail did).
    • Meanwhile, (so at the same time) many others of us were still having dialup type experiences - while browsing anywhere else except 420 was perfectly fine. (MagicJim ran a webpage test and linked it in this post Brand New Forums & Gallery and then DrDoob ran one on a media rich page Brand New Forums & Gallery).
    • Folks have identified big spikes in data usage, perhaps this supports the idea being tossed around that the site is not delivering device adapted media in terms of the size that’s being delivered (not uploaded - this is about what the site is ‘serving’ to us.)
    • I don’t think the developers can legitimately demand individual reports on the tech setup of each user reporting this experience when it’s an intermittent and widespread problem like this - and while all of us with the issue are having no trouble on any other site (I’ve checked via different devices and networks too and found the problem was the same regardless).
    • Some have reported that cancelling the page load and reloading fixed the issue - that doesn’t work for others though (myself included).
    • There were some issues for some logging into the site at various times during this period too. Main request coming out of this is for the site to properly resize the images for delivery like the previous site used to. (My data usage has tripled since the upgrade and that’s without even getting to see most of the pics I’m trying to load - I’m being patient with it but I imagine there are those out there seeing red over this circumstance).
    • I am linking here to the post where Graytail reported things getting faster (blazingly) to give you an idea of the time stamp - because of where i am I can’t always report accurately what time these things were happening without working out time differences - which I’m not going to do! Brand New Forums & Gallery It seemed to continue well for Gray into Sunday. I can say though that at that exact same time others were still having serious issues.
    • Update on this today - it continues to be problematic for me (on multiple devices and different networks while all other usage is fine). Page 16 of my journal still does not load and while it;s true there’s lots of images there, that’s not been an issue before the upgrade, and at the same time I have had similar loading problems on pages with only 2-3 images. I am usually waiting over a minute for only about 20%of images to land, if that. Sometimes I walk away and come back to find that the page load gave up.
    • Rob, I’m sure all that seems like one big complain, but it isn’t - everyone who was posting there is doing so with the desire to give you information about what was happening. In amongst it all was this post from Old Salt (in case you didn’t see it yet) which many of us understand/agree with and are grateful to him for expressing it so well Brand New Forums & Gallery.
    • Folks have stopped reporting here over the last few days, I’m not sure if that means they’re no longer having the problems - but for me the forum experience is still completely hamstrung as far as image viewing goes.

  • “Post a new thread” location list overwhelmingly long: When attempting to start a new thread using my phone> from the Forums main page, the first thing that happens after tapping “post new thread” is a screen to select the location of that thread - which makes sense. However, the list is enormous! It starts with the MMJ threads and lists literally every sub forum alphabetically. I began scrolling down and gave up after a while (and about 10 screenlengths/swipes) when I was still in the MMJ section. This should be an expandable list that starts small, with only Forum section headings, and gets more detailed as you drill down. On the phone this is pretty unmanageable.

Requests /suggestions:
  • There was a suggestion that changing ‘your media’, ‘your ...’ etc to ‘My ...’ would make navigation more intuitive. (counter request from me - please don’t!)
  • A 420 ‘pop socket’ would be a great bit of Merch (suggested by Oldbear! Brilliant! I’d buy one :cheer: )
  • The font readability problem - that I included above
  • Numerous requests all over for the return of the Rep system or something equivalent.
  • In mobile view of lists of threads, where the timestamp of the latest post in a thread is displayed, could it be green like other link text?
NB:** Many reports of users who enjoy having all the site features available in a mobile friendly format. I’m pretty certain the lovers outweigh the detractors about 5:1, but many of the lovers are still having issues, particularly with the media serving (page load) problems. It’s those of us wanting to help you fix it that are reporting!
