since this place is tumble weeds thought i'd toss in a quick
What's Going On In Bluter's Kitchen ?
today i'm making a real low grade hash out of bud buster scroggins or leftovers. commonly called
iron hash,
buster hash,
simple hash, or
crap hash here. this is a real 70's type bro process. i am super surprised i never ran across it here. it really is the lowest hash method, using no screens or anything fancy, which may be why i haven't seen it here. nearly any other method is more refined, and results in higher graded products.
but this is about quick and dirty ... so let's haul out the mud
the nice thing about iron hash is everything is easy to source, and it up cycles essentially a waste product.
it all starts with a well used and crusted up bud buster or grinder needing a cleaning.
i use a coffee grinder to break stuff up. it gets pretty clogged up over time, as i use it to process the medical stuff i make. i generally have to clear it out twice to three times a year.
you can see it gets kinda clogged. trichomes and small bits of material break off in the chopping tornado, and stick to the insides of the buster, slowly building over time. i let it hang out there until i feel like harvesting it.
this is the material we'll use.
quick note :
a simple screening of this stuff would easily result in a much higher grade. it would screen out in a hash box super easy.
to make the hash we're simply gonna use some heat and pressure, with a little moisture, to melt the trichomes together. that's it.
beside the scroggins, we'll need a few easy to source supplies for making iron hash.
an iron. duh.
parchment paper *
a dish drying / tea towel **
spray bottle with a decent fine mist setting.
notes :
* never ever ever use wax paper. actually just gather your wax paper up now and destroy it. there is nothing about wax paper that parchment can't do better. and that shit is in the bible.
** do not do this on an ironing board. you want the towel for this. you'll eventually wind up with little hashlets on all your fresh pressed clothes if you use the ironing board.. and your gf can spot those from space on a satellite ..
this is a super easy process but needs to be accomplished quickly. so get everything ready ahead of time.
start by preheating the iron. the best setting is for cotton, it will change a bit depending on the iron, but a cotton setting works best. it's a pretty high setting on most irons, usually last or second last. i don't use a steam setting - mine is busted - but you can if you want, i find it works better without.
cut some parchment paper off the roll about 1/2 the size of the towel folded in half
spread the towel out on a clean, flat surface, best if it can take a little heat. a counter top or coffee table will usually suffice. i like to give the towel a quick spritz with the water bottle, and then a fast iron to take any wrinkles out, and add some heat to the material.
same thing with the parchment. i give the parchment a mist on both sides and give it a quick iron.
you can skip that step if you get the good brown parchment. i do it with either, to get some heat in to the paper.
quick notes:
this is a bit more important with cheap parchment, like what i am using. sometimes cheap parchment has oil or waxes the better stuff doesn't. a quick press releases them and won't interfere with the rest of the process. good tip for bakers too ..
fold your warm parchment in half.
gaaaarrr ...oven mitt monster .. !
grab about a tablespoon to two tablespoons worth of buster scroggins
should make between a 2 - 3g ball worth in the end. start on the smaller side if it's the first time trying this. everything happens quick and it's easy to screw it up.
open the parchment up and spread it out just a bit in the center.
this method is only good for 2 - 3g worth at a throw. there is too much plant material in it to work more than a decent 3g ball at a go. low grade but it'll work great - if you bust decent stuff - lol
give everything a quick mist - including the buster scroggins. yes them too.
it's a bit heart stopping doing that. could be ruining up a bunch of jealously saved buster banking lol ..
don't worry, it'll be ok. trichomes are hydrophobic ... they shed water which is part of this and other hash methods.
you don't want everything soaked though, just a quick fine mist.
fold the parchment over the spread out scroggins, and give everything a quick second mist. don't soak it.
grab the preheated iron and iron away - press like mad
< i look like this pressing like mad - but not this stuff ..
start first with just the parchment folded over - as soon as the paper ''crinkles" - you'll hear the sound - fold the damp towel over and iron like the devil ..
should be done as soon as the steam escapes the damp towel. usually 35 - 45 seconds of ironing. almost always under 60. press hard. be careful if you tend to use loud expletive phrases during this part of process like i do. the neighbours may inquire about interesting sex..
fold the towel back, should look like this -
peel the parchment quick - you are looking for a slight green - brown color on the surface and edges
you should hear it peel like tape on paper when you pull the parchment, and all the hash should be stuck on the bottom
junk pic. note the residue on the left hand side of the parchment. good sign of a decent press and good temp. the surface of the hash on the right should be a bit darker tho, and a touch more evenly brown.
a quick second iron will fix it. only takes seconds.
one quick mist at this point won't hurt if you are nervy lol... the right heat and fast work is all you'll need with some practice.
open it up when satisfied with a decent quick press, and ball it up quick
sorry for the blurry pics. you have to work fast. as the hash works together, it will stick, and it will pick up off of the parchment clean ..
once you have it all off the parchment, knead it carefully in your hand ..
about 60 - 90 seconds in there is a point at which the hash feels like it is flaking and everything is falling apart
don't worry .. it works fast to a sitckier state if you did ok, and will knead together in to a nice aromatic hash ball
much sadness if not. it will flake apart if you overwater or overwork. usually most use too much water.
it's easy to tell when it gets there, which makes it hard to over work.
the surface smooths out a little when the hash works in good. be gentle, go from kneading to a bit of a roll.
so sexy ...
will look a bit like this
bit of a dirty girl lol. there's a bit more material in this as i just busted up a whole bunch of cbd bud for pills. you will normally get a bit less. the green stuff normally dries and gets used up from the buster a bit quicker than what i left in for this run. i'm not picky.
this is a fun and free thing. i really like having all the thc and cbd material that i processed smashed in to this. everybody loves this cheap hash. it winds up very social and great for sharing.
once together i like to let it rest and cure for two weeks to a month. i don't mess with it before. i cure it in a small jar. usually with some growers hash i like to keep for this purpose.
it loses a bit of weight as the water comes out. normally less than a third. the hash will harden as it does, but can take months to get there. it's minimal as you get better at doing it. i've had stuff stay soft for months but almost never finish it til before it hardens, about 6 months or so. i give some away.
i keep some at my parents place as they don't mind me smoking it there. that is mostly what this is for. it has the classic hash-incense aroma. a lot of folk like it over burning weed.
looks and smokes like what used to be called blonde hash or leb ( lebanese ) here 3 - 4 decades ago. it was also a low grade hash. some still try pass it off as that.
got 5g for 2 balls doing the tutorial, will lose a bit under a g when done to water.
used this much buster stuff from the start for a visual..
i like it for sharing or doing things like camping etc. it's a very portable, easy to use product. won't always slay you out, but it's not what i like to use it for.
happy smoking 420.
