Birdie's Return To Life

Oh Birdie, that is so wonderful!! If they are happy, it makes the trials of life so much easier to handle!:love::love:
Wonderful news Birdie! Don't worry about the OG too much. The membrane will have just briefly stalled her. So happy for you m'dear :)

Thank you, I spent the afternoon sleeping. Day one was tiring as we woke up at 7.
I haven't done that in a long time :)
School is great and I know they will be happy there.
I'm going to check on my green babies in a sec.

Hope you’re enjoying the quiet space with the young ones safely in school. Not surprising your first response was to sleep! I think you could do that for a year and not be caught up :D Afternoon naps forever!

Not to mention school time for them is also garden time for you - so don’t sleep all day ;).

UPDATE 30th of January
Here they are!!!!
I pulled of the helmet after spraying a few times, membrane is still on though.
Is it enough just to drop a little water on her so she cracks it herself?
White widow is 6 days old

I missed this post the little ones are off to a good start I always seem to have issues with the shells not wanting to drop off .

I've been doing early mornings for most my life and I'm still not used to it lol. Go check those babies! :)
I just did :) ww is growing healthy and strong. OG is still with closed cotyledum leaves.. Alive but sleeping...

I was with them in school all day. That was the tiresome part lol.
Due to language barrier, I need to be of assistance :)

I think they pop with helmets due to the fact that we place them quite shallow in soil, or at least I do.
We will see with the OG.
Temp is a steady 23 degrees Celcius (73 Fahrenheit) and humidity... I have no clue
Temp/humidity meter will arrive in 2 - 3 weeks.

Oh! Ok I get it - yes exhausting. But that’s great that you can do that and not have to rely on someone else to facilitate language with them. Some day you will get your parental time during school hours!

I do this too! I’m working on my depth bravery. :)

I was told to plant a seed to the same depth as the seeds are thick. More like cover the seed with the same thickness as the seed is. Does that make more sense? lol Cheers

I'm sure most of you have your ways so I thought I would share this gif that another member pointed me to when I first joined. Many may agree and already do it this way, and many may disagree. But I've never had a helmet head to date, albeit my sampling isn't that large.
As the seed grows toward the top of the soil it is naturally turning, helping the helmet off. The second image shows it pushing down around the cotyledons when going to the surface.

I have that as well and usually place tap like that.. But I think OG must have been placed weirdly...and seed goes in and is covered with a thin blanket of soil.
I never had this with the membrane before though.

Wow, I have apparently been doing it wrong all this time...I've always just stuck my finger into the first knuckle and drop that bean in there...Do you really think it makes a diff?? Mine always pop, and they've been in the freezer for....4 years I think...maybe longer...

Doesn't this assume that the tap root does a 180º turn when it comes out of the seed casing? Besides the fact that a lot of us wait for at least ¼" tap roots, most of the ones I've seen don't make that turn in water or paper towel.

Is that only if they're planted in soil as soon as the casing splits? And if we plant when the tap is already out, are we supposed to bury it tap up?

I dunno, the tap roots I got, or to the best of my recollection, always turned when coming out of the casing. So the root is going the right direction immediately. If upside down, then the root sees the light and makes a u-turn so to speak. When I plant my seeds my taps are not that big and sort of resemble the image
