Big Boned The Noob Indoor Practice Grow - Mystery Seeds - In Soil - CFL & 300W LED

Hey guys! I'm a beginner grower, I have grown outdoor this summer but not much before that... Before reading me, be aware that if some sentences sound weird, it is because english isn't my first langage!

Here are some information about this journal:

I started seeds on december 1st 2012, at first I didn't think it would be succesful because I found a small bud containing like 10 seeds in half an ounce of some nice weed... It was the only seeds I found in the bag, which I found was weird. My friend was thinking that they wouldn't germinate but I tought 3 or 4 of them could have the potential. It turns out I was right, 4 seeds germinated. I just wanted to test the seeds and make some test on head cutting before the real thing of next summer... They grew very well during december. So I started to take it a bit more seriously and I started to think about the flowering stage coming soon... After studying a long time, I decided to go with a led because I'll be flowering my babies in a relatively large closet and the heat of the hps was worrying me too much in these conditions... I don't plan on having much to yield but I could be surprised, so far the 4 ''test'' plants are really robust, the stem is really thick for their size... On the good side, I am not in a hurry to have something to smoke because I had a very succesful summer...

What I'm using:

soil: miracle grow enriched potting mix 0.14,0.14,.0.14,
light: sunlight or 5 CFL at 23w blue spectrum, 300Watt Led 8-band coming from ebay in a week!
water: drinkable tap water
Growing space: closet of 3' x 6' and a fan

What I've done so far

-Watering every 24 hour or so
-I have cut the head first around the december 26th (on the picture)
-I have cut both new heads on january 4th (on the picture)
-I've ordered and received seeds for next summer, which are 5 seeds feminized of these 3 strains: Northern Lights, Swiss Cheese and Master Kush, I received also 10 random seeds as a christmas freebie from Nirvana seeds

On this day, january 14th

I'm starting to germinate another 5 seeds since I have a lot of time before summer and I start to have confidence with the gear and place that is at my disposition. I took 5 new seeds from the freebies random pack that I received. ...And I almost forgot!, I started a feminized seed of master kush 6 days ago, the first preliminary leaves on this one are starting to open on it... I'm waiting for the other 5 seeds to crack... The 4 plants in veg are still doing awesome, the stem is big as hell!

If you have any questions or suggestion or comments, go for it, I'll be very happy to read and answer you!

In the meantime of the next update, here is a few pics of the 4 (hopefully) ladies started on december 1st...

This one is 4 1/2'' high and 9'' large! It should be very bushy in a few weeks!

What's up, you medicinal stoners? Just want to show you this plant with a weird genetic malformation, since its first pair of leaves, it still happens on one head:

whao! new setup today!

the quality of the lamp seem to me pretty good... I think the plants gonna love it. it is supposed to consume around 180w for real but in the specs it is made of 100 x 3 watts led... They don't set them to their max output to preserve the lifetime of the leds.

Looking healthy... humidity is normally between 30 and 40%... it may be a bit low but leaves (leaves or leafs??) are soft and look healthy so I'll continue like that. I often spray them under and on leaves. I think they love their new light for now but we'll see for flowering... I started to give 12/12 light to the 2 biggest of the 4 today. I just don't want them to become too big since they're from unknown seeds

The master kush seed is 11 days old and started to have its first pair of leaves
4 other seeds are germinating (from a 10 freebies seeds random pack i received with my order)

Have a nice day! :peace:

The LED was too low! Leaf burns have appeared since... They were shocked for the last week and I had to amputate some places and they look like they recover very slowly... These things are more powerful than I tought... At least i'm learning!

Re: Big Boned The Noob Indoor Practice Grow - Mystery Seeds - In Soil - CFL & 300W LE

hey i learned something new. i started with cfls and im think about led for my mystery seeds from nirvana. i didnt know leds could burn. subscribing looks interesting. i wanna see how that plant with the weird leaves turns out

Re: Big Boned The Noob Indoor Practice Grow - Mystery Seeds - In Soil - CFL & 300W LE

thanks for your interest man! 3 on 4 are now gone, they were not recovering. The one with the weird leafs is gone too. I kept the biggest one, it's a nice female and looks good now...
My 5 seeds of january were at 6ft from the lamp and they still didn't like it. The seller, was promoting that the LED was correct for all the stages but it look a bis too strong for the youngest plant. On the other side I grow in a closet so the walls are close to each others, maybe the walls reflect too much light, i don't know... I'll use it only for budding from now on because CFL's were doing very well for the first stages.
Here's some heartbreaking pics

Re: Big Boned The Noob Indoor Practice Grow - Mystery Seeds - In Soil - CFL & 300W LE

By the way the damage on the seedlings was done only in a few hour exposed under the LED. And the older ones took about 24 hours before showing signs of something. The heads were bright green and they started to turn yellow and the tips of a few leaves were starting to brownish. By that time the damage was done... Even the small leaves hide at the bottom of the plant were burnt, this is weird...

How often are you watering? Are you using any nutrients?
A few of my clones are acting the same way.. Im running a 450MH about 18" above them and keep moving an inch up like every couple hours.. But I read you have your lights about 6feet above your plants and that doesn't really sound like the issue.. Have you check the pH of your tap water your feeding them with?

Im very slim with knowledge so hopefully one of these pros will stop by with some knowledge, Hope things turn around for ya bro!

Re: Big Boned The Noob Indoor Practice Grow - Mystery Seeds - In Soil - CFL & 300W LE

I'm watering when the soil become light and dry, every 24-36 hours normally. I used nutrients once in december but very little. And symptoms appears so fast after I put them under the light, I don't see what else it could be. Plus they started recovering after I removed them from under the light. But a LED is very different than MH or HPS.

:yummy:

Yeah I feel ya brotha, Look around the journals in progress for others growing with LEDs, i'll tend to hit up their thread and ask them my questions there. That way they see your question, I can tell these grows are going to get time consuming and people probably don't tend to go on others thread but their own or their friends, best of luck to ya BigBoned! Hope everythin greens up for ya!

Re: Big Boned The Noob Indoor Practice Grow - Mystery Seeds - In Soil - CFL & 300W LE

Hey bigboned and CA315, Welcome to the TEAM!
We all go on all the journal mate. This one is pretty new, takes some time.

They look good except the burns. I dont veg with LED's I veg with CFL's but if they got better when you raised the lights and the seedlings got hit worst then thats probably the problem like you say mate. The first sign of heat stress is the edges of the leaves turning up all the way along the blades. If they do that raise the lights until it stops. Get a temp and humidity gauge at plant height to know for sure. Should be about 70-75F or 22-26C. Humidity in veg 50-75 RH :)

You wont need to be feeding soils for 2 weeks after re-pots. Soil usually has enough for 2 weeks worth, then start at 1/4 strength nutes if they show signs of needing them.

If you have any questions just ask, i'll try to help you anyway I can, If I cant sure some other growers will link here very soon with more knowledge. Your in the right place to learn though mate, everyone here is really helpful.

O yeah and its "leaves" mate or "a leaf". Whats your first language? :high-five:
