300w LED - Sunset Kush

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Sunset Kush by Setting S

Setting Sun,

Did you do the removing of the glass technique for your 300w? I remember reading that someone (Irish?) removed the glass. Its such a nice light, I'm hesitant to shatter the glass cover - do you imagine it actually makes a difference?

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Sunset Kush by Setting S

High theroots!

No, I did not remove the glass from my Spectra 300. I thought about it, but I felt that most people who buy a light are probably not going to break it out, so I decided to keep my light in the same condition that I felt most growers would.

In an HID hood, good quality glass reduces intensity by about 10%, so I'd think it would be similar for the glass over the LED's.

Mr.Sun... WOW!!... This is a beautiful journal man. Iv been looking into the led's. Im looking for a better alternative to my 600 hps, cooler and pulling less power. Straight question, ARE THEY WORTH THE MONEY? Will it do better than my HPS??? You are an inspiration to all of us newbies :thanks:

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Sunset Kush by Setting S

Beautiful!

It looks like the LEDs have progressed a lot since I bought the ppf-800.

If it performs as well as a 250hps with no heat, and no bulbs to replace, it may well be the answer to many patient's needs.

Great journal. Thanks for all your time and effort.

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Sunset Kush by Setting S

yup i would say that a success for sure, mainly if you think of the big picture that this was your 1st grow using these lights and TRF, so its only going to get better now that we know more about the light height and the TRF and you know what strain yields better and your still fine tuning the mediums. i say its only gonna get better for you the more you use this light and get things dialed in. the question is how far can we push the plants with these lights? i have a feeling theirs still allot of stuff we haven't learned about these led lights, i mean theirs been lots of years and growers using HID so with Google we can learn almost all we need to know about HID. But with LEDs if a different ball park since its still new teck.. all i know from my grow and your grow and Mikes and others is these lights grow some great plants. so now we know if our plants or someones plants dont do good its probably the grower or another issue why the plants yielded like they did, not the lights. i mean i know i wont yield crazy on my grow but i wont even blame my lights for it because it was other reasons, shit the lights with the less IR probably is the reason their still alive in my temps.lol

allot of people complain on how much led lights cost, witch they are allot of money dont get me wrong but my point is on your 1st harvest your crop value paid for the light on ur 1st grow with just 2 plants! not a bad deal in my book.. i know its even easier to pay for a HID setup on ur 1st grow also, but i am just saying.. i know my value on my 1st grow with the 600w paid for that lights and some. so its allot of money up front but they will pay for its self on the 1st grow, just Imagen if you had more plants in their? something to think about when everyone says leds arnt worth it because of the cost. the main thing we need to know now is can leds grow more potent buds then HID? thats a huge deciding factor to know?

great job brother. enjoy the smoke! i cant wait to i can smoke my own weed again, nothing like smoking ur own grown weed its that much better IMO. its killing me because my room smells like i few skunks died in their, just reeks real bad, i cant wait

Thanks Irish, it was a learning experience, that's for sure. I keep wanting to drop this light lower because it's hard to believe that a 300w LED can work well at 19+", but that's where it seems to work best.

I'm very happy with the yield and the quality.

pretty buzzed right now, as a matter of fact ;)

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Sunset Kush by Setting S

All I can say is wow! Vicky truly had an amazing yield and the shrub did ok. I could only imagine 4 girls like Vicky in that setup and the crucial yield you would have. I have really enjoyed all the harvest to dried pics. Looks like you now have some great meds! Thanks for doing this grow SS. You keep my inspiration high for these GLH lights and teach me so much on new grow methods. I can't wait to start using TRF's in the future. I have like 10 hydro magazines laying around with thousands of nutrient advertisements, but in the end, growing MJ is simple and all these 10 part nute treatments are kinda pointless. With the MJ industry inflation, one solid grow can provide all payback on the high cost of LEDs so I figure cost should never be the issue. I can't wait to see how well you can tune in the light with the PPP plants. Those high yielders should be a lot of fun. I can already tell a significant difference between stretching periods in flowering for HID grows and LED grows, but not sure how yields are affected, because my LED girls are soo dense. Can't wait to see where your next grow takes you. This one was great though! You are the man.

~MJ~

Thanks for your observations and kind words. I think my tents are maxed out at 4 plants, and 3 may possibly yield more, but 3 plants like Vicky would have been tight but workable, and almost 10oz, so I think that's doable.

This LED light has great coverage in my tent. Seems to be from corner to corner, but not at the expense of intensity. Plants seem to love the spectrum, and it both vegges and flowers very well.

It's quiet and runs relatively cool. I can very effectively cool the tent with a very quiet 4" S&P fan, so the grow setup is both simple and quiet.

The nutes industry is doing nothing new under the sun. The public is conditioned to believe that various substances in bottles are what drives things, and that it has to be expensive to be good.

Glad you're following the other grow. It's going to be interesting to see what happens after I flip them, which I'm doing tonight ;)

thanks again, MJ

Nice haul Setting Sun, they look lovely from here. :cheesygrinsmiley:

That's some hairy nugs setting sun, it reminds of a strain we used to grow back in the day called Jedi. :dreamy:

thank you grandaddie!

The NL/William's Wonder buds look very similar, tons of red hair, so that must come from that parent.

I took a few more pics tonight after some cure time.

thank you so much, TROUBLESOME2 ;)

I'm wrapping up this journal, but I have another grow journal where I'm currently comparing a 360w GLH LED light versus a 400w HPS, so I'm hoping it helps answer that question:

300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

My day job involves technology, and occasionally there are leaps in the progress of a particular tech. I think this light represents one of those leaps, because there's a big difference in how this light performs versus the previous generation of LED lights.

This light performs how I was hoping LED lights would perform a couple of years ago, but it was all disappointment when it came to LED's back then.

This is an LED light that I can grow *great* meds with, and that I can run through the summer without heat issues.

I like the ability to use both MH and HPS bulbs in an HID system, but since this LED light both vegges and flowers well, I'm not giving up up anything there except the cost of bulb replacement.

I like this light a lot, and it's going to get a lot of use. I think it would be an excellent solution for the needs of many medical marijuana patients.

If I really got on my game with the verbage, I would hope to merely locate this nail that you drive home nicely:
The nutes industry is doing nothing new under the sun. The public is conditioned to believe that various substances in bottles are what drives things, and that it has to be expensive to be good.
Gator points out that 'nutes' are fertilizer, which is mostly denatured shit.
Expensive shit :morenutes:

:amen: their is a reason why my HID light is not being used. i really like these leds, and they treat me good and my meds:thumb:

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Sunset Kush by Setting S

Going to wrap this journal up with a few nug shots after a bit of cure time, and a smoke report.

Now that the buds have cured a bit, the taste is a nice mix of pine from the NL/ww and earthiness from the Violator Kush. I like it, it's a great combination.

The buzz is also a really nice mix of both parents. Violator Kush is probably better for pain relief and insomnia, but Sunset Kush hits hard. You get rubberface, your eyes get red, your senses get heightened and your mind soars, but without the edginess of the NL/ww. Very euphoric and cerebral, and just makes you feel good. Might be good medicine for headaches and glaucoma.

Very creative buzz too, if you get off the couch ;).

The rubberface and buzz last a long time

The difference in potency between Vicky and Shrub is huge. Glad Vicky was the big one ;).

This grow has been a trip, but a really good one.

LED lights like this one can make it a lot easier for patients to grow their own meds, and it's only gonna get better ;)

Re: 420 Cannasumer Reports - GrowLEDHydro Spectra 300w LED / Sunset Kush by Setting S

Congrats on another successful harvest and thanks for the some report, Sun! Sounds like your Sunset Kush is a winner - and you're the only one holding her genes right now. ;)

Slow dancing in a burning room, indeed...

Here's some happy trails [haven't seen trails in years] right back at ya.[/CENTER]

b:welldone:

I used to work with a guy that had a sign next to his desk that said "Complaint Department: 300 Miles That Way" with an arrow going to the left. That meter beats it, hands down...

What, are you trying to imply these threads get edited? :rolleyes3 I've never had a pic removed by the mods before... (even when it's completely apropos and relatively tasteful) :cough:

At least, that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it--! :allgood:

------

Now that you've had a successful test run SS, you can work on trying more for yield this time around and maxing out those tents... (3 plants, and better light distribution for each, or four and max out the space? The latter is still probably better for total yield (that depends though-selective pruning may help, depends on your strain characteristics), even if the per plant yield might drop a bit. Why not go for it?)

(Esp. since, apart from the (manageable) safety issue with HIDs and removing a little extra/radiant heat from the garden, having to use 50w+/sq ft of LEDs (7 sf tent and 360w LED) to get similar results to a comparable HID wattage fixture doesn't make financial sense...esp. if one uses cheap regular bulbs and simply supplements with an inexpensive FL white light source. The 'cost of the bud' argument works even better for HIDs like that, both with initial purchase costs and ongoing electric, with similar power usage characteristics.)

I'm a fan of efficiency, too. Where efficiency and convenience meet is the sweet spot I find most interesting. ;)

Nice work!

I have given your comments some thought, and will reply on the 3 vs 4 plants issue in the other journal.

I agree on the financial assessment, but let's not forget that I had to air-cool the HID hood to make this comparison even feasible. I can use the LED light year-round without having to resort to measures like an air-cooled fixture, and I have to think that setting up an air-cooled hood with all the ducting, hose clamps and assorted other crap, might be intimidating to many peeps who just want to hang a light and do a small personal medical grow.

There are a lot of people who aren't grow geeks like us(!), that would grow their own if it was uncomplicated, and LED lights are a clean and simple setup.

I'm a fan of efficiency, too. Where efficiency and convenience meet is the sweet spot I find most interesting. ;)

I'm right there with you. Where efficiency, practicality, and convenience converge is a very sexy place. A good smaller grow perks me up more than a big roomful of colas.

Nice work!

Thank you, sir.

It's been an honor and a blast to have you participate in this journal ;).
