Barney's Farm - Mimosa X Orange Punch - DWC

Everyone has their limits and you gave it the old college try. Now find a SIP bucket that doesn't leak!
I’m going to take Azi’s advice and go with the home improvement store that has blue buckets :) he says they are tried and true!

I started looking for a video to watch while eating lunch but this thread just kept playing around in my head.

I think it was here on 420 that a grower started a thread in which he reported that he'd done, I think, four grows in a row where he had cannabis plants in a res and they did fine through seedlings and veg and then, every time they hit flower, wipe out. All of the plants died.

And this happened not just once or twice but four times!

My observation is that he had definitely proven that you could not grow four cannabis plants in that res (it was 3 gallons or somesuch).

What you've done is, in a way, similar. The same steps, clean everything, replant, and then bang! Catastrophic failure. You changed some of the variables but, overall, you ended up getting the same result. Troubleshooting (God knows, as a software engineer for 33 years now), is a process of eliminating the variables a lot of the time. Sure, at lot of times I can read through code and tell you where it's going to fail but most of the time, it's an issue of taking variable out of the equation until you can get to the desired outcome.

If your res top was allowing light in, that will tend to allow bacteria to multiply in the res. I can't say how much light and how quickly but, yeh, make it dark as a whale's ass in there and you won't have issues. If some light is getting in, that increases the odds.

In short, you've gone through a couple of iterations and, if you look at each piece of the hydro equation (and there are quite a few), you've eliminated a lot of them but you haven't done one thing that you "really need to do" in hydro which is to keep light out of the res.

The bottom line - snag a can of acrylic black paint and apply two coats. Drop a few seeds and take it for another spin. The worst outcome you'll have is that it fails so your Fall 2024 grow will be delayed for another few days. OTOH, if it does turn out that the issue was light getting in the res, you're on your way. You've done an awful lot of "prep" work for this so spending a little more time to nail things down would seem to be time well spent.

Has it been frustrating? Yes but the marginal amount of labor, a few hours, if it does solve the problem will have huge rewards whereas taking a different course leaves you with nothing to show for the time and effort you've put in.

Looking on the bright side, at least you didn't do four grows where you had your plants die as soon as you hit flower.

Didn't they make a movie about that? The one where they call in a priest and the kid's head spins around? :-)

Thanks!

Still at 5.6 :) happy about that!

I guess with all of this DWc learning I have a new question that I need to look into.

Still PH the nutes once I go to res only feeding? I know that it won’t change the ph of the media in anyway, however the roots will be in the water and I just answered my own question.

I will be ph’ing to 5.8ish
