Autos v. Photos - A 5x5 No Rules Fight for Yield: A Jon & NickHardy Gig

Root Porn
Skywalker Auto

Here’s the root ball from the Skywalker, a 7-gallon pot of coco grown using @Remo Nutrients. This is pretty much what you want. And thanks to @Gee64 for the trick of covering the top of the medium so as to create a dark top, thus drawing roots to the top of the pot. Although he uses a different method than I do growing fully organically, my poor man’s method works well too (cover the top of the medium with cloth pots folded up - they are plenty dense enough to block the light). What you see here in the picture showing the top of the medium I did not get before beginning to use that trick. Before I would get an inch or two of basically unused medium. It works in coco too, Gee! Lol.

You can actually see the line/layer that resulted from the dark top trick. It is clearly a layer of feeder roots that is “newer” than the rest. Fabulous.

Maybe because it is a sub-par Hardy grow

So we’re not trampling on him, he already opened the door.

A sub par Nick Hardy grow is for most like finishing with a birdie at Augusta or winning a Pinto on The Price is Right. Nick Hardy doesn't drive Pintos. Or play golf. Nick Hardy doesn't open doors. Doors open for him. But he can slam a revolving door.

Yours,

Nick Hardy

And ladies and gentlemen, there you have it….Mr. Nick Hardy.
 :green_heart:

I have 36 litres of medium and 360g yield

So 360/3600 = a 0.1 RG Ratio? (Roy Growin) (10 other way)

😅

I get what you mean. I like the idea!

Recently OG Kush

A normal solo is 473ml x 12 = 5676ml

483g yield / 5676 = 0.08 (11.75 other way - makes more sense)
Other way round grams/litres
You have 10g/L
Jon works out at 7.5g/L
Let's see how that pans out at final weigh in
Anybody else want to throw in a comparison?

Nice call. And obviously I hope and expect to be closer to Nicks number. Lol

Hey Buddy, is that a giant rootball in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?🤣.

Nice roots Jon👊.

It's a little tip I like to use and try to time it so the roots are moving in during stretch so when stretch is done so when the time that a lot of people see a deficiency arises, this method taps you directly into the area where all the topdressings/ewc have been building. I'm glad it works with synthetics too. It's like having an extra gear.

Interesting idea. Kind of like The Rev's spikes. A reserve of nutrients available to the plant.

When do you start covering the top, timing-wise?

I use spikes too. I mulch it around flip. Maybe a few days later. Within the 1st week of flower for sure.

Week 4 is usually when you see deficiencies pop up if they are going to arise. Those deficiencies actually started around week 2 and became visible at around week 3-4, so you really should do it right at flip if it's 1st run soil.

I use a product called Seasoil because its very available here.

Medium sized fir bark nuggets/mulch works well too.

And the EWC in it waters calcium downwards the whole time, before you call the roots up.

How many litres you got? Multiply gallons by 4

<ducks as Jon throws something at his head>

🤣
It’s actually a bit more, and every gallon of nutes I mix proves it. Cyco is listed by ml/liter. So for a gallon I multiply by 4, cuz duh. Except that means I’m technically mixing every gallon just a touch light (actually heavy by the math). When you test the ppm against what it’s supposed to be at a certain mix, it’s always 50 points light or so. This actually has worked real well for the Cyco, cuz like Shed, I also ran the numbers, and the advanced chart I’m feeding from is HOT. 1650 ppm in this, week 6, according to the chart. But my gallons come out to more like 1550 - 1575. Just sayin. Lmao. I LMAO cuz by the math it should be exactly the opposite. But yet I’m telling you it ain’t.

Yeah my cloth pot method doesn’t do much for the calcium supply. Cloth pots are an inert medium, and it’s not like you water over them. Lol.

Northern Lights organic

More harvest. Five colas still left. I take them down as I feel like it and trim them like this, then hang them in the order trimmed across one line. That way I jar them as they dry in order. And since I wet trimmed to this point (all the way, these are done), once they’re the right dry I simply cut them off the stems and right into the jar. Heh. Wet trimming is a luxury when the buds in question allow for it to be done effectively.

Beautiful nugs. Can’t wait to smoke this.

A .06 difference says they shouldn’t come out any different. All I’m sayin

Why don’t you just mix 4 litres at a time?!
