Autos v. Photos - A 5x5 No Rules Fight for Yield: A Jon & NickHardy Gig

I just blasted mine with 30 seconds of 22w of UVC which first came up in conversation in Shed’s thread, you’ll find it in its normal location, but it may have been instigated by CL?

Anyway - to get the PM it needs to be done after lights out because PM has a natural defense against UVC but its like some contrived Star Wars death star shield plot device - its only active whilst the sun is active. So 4 hours or so after lights out I zapped them for 30 seconds. The problem is of course - the light runs from about 90-430nm UVC, above about 300nm its visible. So yeah - light stress on the plants leading to hermies or not?

All these questions and more to be answered in the next episode of “How to fk your grow!”

Personally, I think - no way is it going to stress the plants enough to hermie. I reckon light stress is the least likely stress to cause hermaphrodite plants. Temperature/Humidity/diet I think are far more likely. In nature here we might get on certain weeks of the year electrical storms 5 nights out of 7. Lot of sheet lightening. All sort of lightning.

Its in areas like this cannabis sativa originates.

Anyway - wasn’t expecting PM anyway, we treated them and the tent is so bare the environment is way lower down but its there so I used it!

I have 36 litres of medium and 360g yield

So 360/3600 = a 0.1 RG Ratio? (Roy Growin) (10 other way)

😅

I get what you mean. I like the idea!

Recently OG Kush

A normal solo is 473ml x 12 = 5676ml

483g yield / 5676 = 0.08 (11.75 other way - makes more sense)

What did I instigate? Did it work out ok? CL🍀

I couldn’t disagree more about light stress being the least likely reason to hermie a plant. That said, I do not know about the effect of what you did. Very interesting. Sincerely hope you don’t hermie the whole tent, that would suck bad. You are a risk taker if nothing else @NickHardy. I wonder though - why take that chance if as you already said, PM is not an issue anyway? Preventative is one thing. Preventative that equals a serious potential risk is another. No?

Ha! Already on it @Roy Growin! I’m on that page too. I *think* so far I feel like an ounce of yield per gallon of medium is half decent, although I already know that’s on the low side. I’d call that the minimum I’m expecting. I got 7 ounces almost exactly from the first plant (7.07 - Skywalker) jarred, and that was in a 7 gallon pot. (Anecdotal evidence piece #1, lmao). That said, it seems to be extremely strain specific, as you’d think. For example, the big Gorilla Cookies in the 10 gallon pot of coco will yield significantly more than 10 ounces, while the Bruce Banner, also in a 10 of coco, will come in more like 8. Just guesstimating, but that’s about what it looks like. The BB however, could easily have yielded a lot better had I not had her right in the middle in the most difficult spot to work for me, and more importantly, if I had not turned her into a 40-cola scrog-type plant. I can see her sweet spot is more in the 12-24 cola range. (She’s not harvested yet, so yes, I’m into hopefully semi-educated speculation here, lol). Anyway, yes, it’s interesting, and has real life implications in that it helps when planning a grow to have an idea of the end result. What do you want from the plant and how will you get there? Fun fun eh?

Trichomes

This plant is taking her damn time finishing up. Every time I think I’m taking her tomorrow she wakes up with a small crown of new growth shooting out. Enough for me to say, nah, we will wait on that. And her trichomes are holding steady where they have been all week. I suspect she’ll fall over the edge of the trichome cliff any day and suddenly I’ll see a bunch of amber. Anyone get that? I’ve noticed that with the trichs, seems like there comes a day at finish time when all of them are fully white, when the next day you check and it’s like whoa, time to take her. I call it the trichome cliff. ?? She’s about there. See? Dig the purple trichs too. Heh. Not as voluminous as they were on the Cherry Pie last time, but we got a couple. Heh.

Maybe because it is a sub-par Hardy grow and he feels he can practice on it because it is not a prime yield, is what I'm thinking, or am I projecting?

Not sure, that’s why I asked. But yeah, maybe so. Or maybe he’s already realized it’s over and he’s taking crazy chances in an effort to get it closer? Idk.

It’s gonna be funny when Nick responds to this. I know how you mean it and so will he but he’ll probably have to mess with you for the “sub par Hardy grow.”   Which it is as he has already said. So we’re not trampling on him, he already opened the door. Lmao!

Yeah, I was effectively paraphrasing. I have a sense that Nick won't be disturbed by my comment in the least 🤞

Root Porn
Skywalker Auto

Here’s the root ball from the Skywalker, a 7-gallon pot of coco grown using @Remo Nutrients. This is pretty much what you want. And thanks to @Gee64 for the trick of covering the top of the medium so as to create a dark top, thus drawing roots to the top of the pot. Although he uses a different method than I do growing fully organically, my poor man’s method works well too (cover the top of the medium with cloth pots folded up - they are plenty dense enough to block the light). What you see here in the picture showing the top of the medium I did not get before beginning to use that trick. Before I would get an inch or two of basically unused medium. It works in coco too, Gee! Lol.

Hey @SSgrower - awesome, I’ll check it out, lemme know when you do that? Also - these buds are like mutant spears. I have a feeling if I had done far less colas the spears would be twice the size and perfectly formed. And I also feel this should be fairly representative of the time to finish for the strain. Her odor is a huge plus - strong smell like pink cotton candy mixed with a bit of citrus and dankness. Shes a stinker. And obviously she has amazing colors. My overnight temps have been around 62-65 degrees, so not really cold enough to trigger the purple/color response from temperatures only - this is how they do! You’ll be very psyched. FWIW.
