Autoflower Myth Busting Thread

Pardon my ignorance, and if it has been covered just steer me in that direction, but here is my question. I get how an auto will bud and finish in a set number of days without having to change it's lighting schedule. I even get you can train it , top it, and treat it just like any other plant. My question is, how is this possible? Was it bread into the plant? was it genetically modified? has there always been this strain it just normally occurs at the equator?

I'm not all that technical, but, yes, autos have the ruderalis trait/gene which allows or makes them do that. Autos originated in Europe, Russia, specially made to be short, flower fast with any light conditions. But, I'm still learning ;)

I was thinking about trying it with some lower branches to see if I can take something that would otherwise produce a wee popcorn bud and see if relocating it can turn it into a bigger bud. I don't expect it will turn into a bushy plant but it may grow roots and finish flowering.....only one way to find out :)

It'll work, but, the ten days you set it back (while the cut roots) will not come back, well, you can run it ten days longer. But the end result will disappoint. I've taken lower branches without seeing much slow down from the mother,, just getting that cut to root, stabilize, and go....Good luck, have fun. ;)

Just to elaborate a little more on your question older grower..... as mass said the Ruderalis traits is what makes it flower automatically due to how far north it grew and it lived in 22 to 24 hr light... Ruderalis is bred into photo plants genetics and that where autos cane from... that is also why we have this myth busting thread...

The only characteristics from the Ruderalis that we want in autos is the ability to flower under any light schedule...all the other traits of the Ruderalis plant are not good for us as growers at all.... they are prone to being small and very little potency...... so this is how autos got a bad name....when they were first bred into the photo strains and released folks grew them and well... they got shitty plants... they were small with crappy buds and not worth smoking at times...

Now years later the outstanding breeders are further down the line and have bred out most of the bad traits of the Rudy except for the only thing we wanted to keep... the Autoflowering part..
