Aspen's Alaskan Purple In Soil - 2022

I wish you the best! I was really hoping to see some progress. Im always for the underdog! These little guys are putting up a fight!

Thanks OG. I was really hoping as well, and it's been a bit depressing opening the tent every morning and not seeing much. However, I'm optimistic because they have nutes now, so now I'm definitely expecting some results in the next 4-5 days.

I will be here quietly observing, as always! Ive got a bag of seeds I found from about 20years ago. I will be dropping a few for giggles on next run. I was always told it's 50/50 inconsistent storage kills seeds. These were in a Michigan basement for last 20years, always 51f.

I'll definitely keep an eye on that when you get it up and going. My theory is that the enzymes the plant uses in the seed husk and the cotyledons just weren't viable due to the inconsistent storage conditions. I haven't found anything online specific to cannabis seed, but have seen some studies done with similar sized vegetable seeds and that's been the determination. Feeding them early to make up for that would have been the right call here I believe.

I'm interested in seeing how you get along with old seed, especially much older. But with them being stored at 51F consistently, hopefully you don't have the same problems!

Day 22
Hi everybody! Today's update is super simple and short, just to show that the feed seems to have worked the way it needed. There's a noticeably darker green color in the middle of them, so they're enjoying the feed for sure.

I've noticed 2-3 fungus gnats buzzing around so I ordered some yellow sticky cards and mosquito bits that'll be here in a few days. The plan is to crush them up and sprinkle it on top of the soil for the next watering.

I would like to start a GoFundMe for @AspenCultivator !

You deserve a good bean! Just one! I know many of us would donate!

Haha, thanks OG! It's okay though, after the new year I'm planning a seed order, so it won't be too long to see what these do and grab some better seeds. I haven't bought seeds in a couple years now so I need to look into the different banks and see what's what.

We have some amazing sponsors! Check there always! Friends with seeds are good friends also

Day 25
Hey everyone! We aren't dead yet, which is nice, but growth is still slower than I'd like to see. It's been 5 days since they were watered with feed so they received 80ml of water each this morning. Originally I was going to crush up the Mosquito Bits and sprinkle the dust on top of the soil and water it in...however even using a stone pestle and mortar surprisingly I wasn't able to crush them! The f? I've seen other growers say they crush them up and to be honest unless they're using a food processor or spice grinder (which I have but don't want to use on the Bits) idk how they crushed them. No matter!

So I read the instructions on the bag and you can do a 30 minute soak so that's what I ended up doing. Wrapped up 2 tbsp of bits in cheese cloth and tied it up like a tea bag and let it soak in 1/2 gallon of water for 45 mins or so. I also PHed the water down to 6.3 like normal.

The watering was done just like every other: 10ml at a time using a syringe circling around the stem and increasing the size of the circles with each syringe applied. While waiting around 3-5 mins between 10ml.

It looks like #2 is showing as favorite right now. The little weird ones always tend to do better, it seems?

The pics don't show it too well, but they're still a darker green in the middle but still look hungry. I'm thinking the next watering, which will be with nutes, will be at full strength. Let's see what happens. The plan is to baby these through to the new year and place a seed order. Once they come in if they're still barely growing I'll decide if I want to scrap them and start with fresh seed.

Thanks for coming by and seeing the slow growers! Patience is key here, and I don't want to just throw them out, but I also don't want to wait a year for a few ounces of bud. So we'll see how they continue on!

Unless that's coco, you need to let the soil dry out between waterings to get the seedlings in gear. It needs to build a good root system to power the plant and if you don't let it do that it will stunt your plant.

Thanks Azimuth. I completely agree with you, and it's what I've been following precisely. I have a third cup of soil media that's completely dry. It's received literally zero water in the last 25 days, so yeah, it's dry. It has the same volume of media as the seedling cups. I use a kitchen scale to make sure they're dry and ready for water, which means they weigh the same as my media cup. (Within 10 or so grams).

When I water, I do a little at a time. Wait, water, wait, water. It takes 30 mins to water these two cups. I use a syringe so I can direct the water where I want it to go. I water tight around the stem with the first syringe. Second 10ml (again after about 3-5 mins) goes a bit further from the stem, closer to the rim of the cup. Next 10ml goes towards the rim of the cup. I then repeat this until I have runoff. So in 80ml of water (8 syringes worth) I'm moving throughout the entire cup just about 3 separate times.

I've annotated it in this journal on previous pages, but on average the cups are ready for water around day 5 or 6. As they grow, that time should be decreasing. This is only the 4th time they've been watered in 25 days.

I've read Emilya's watering in soil thread twice, every single page. If there's something I'm missing, please let me know.

Sounds like you've got it covered. :thumb:

Idk that I'd say that...but between the environmental setup and following the watering to a T, the only reason I can think of as to why they're still so small is old seed/bad genes. Brand new dirt, brand new nutes, brand new PH and PPM instruments. 🤷‍♂️ 100w from the wall of LED quantum board goodness at around 18" I believe right now? 250ppfd.

All I know is these ladies are being left in the absolute dust compared to others that started at the same time.

1000000000000% weed is weed. It grows by itself in many environments. I think people over complicate most of the time. Get a good bean. Your problems are past genetics. Even old seeds have potential for growth. Even the most genetically dysfunction go somewhere.

How about your temps? What do you have for min/max on a typical day?

80*F during day, 68*F during night. It stays that way constantly, here's a graph from the last 5 days:

You can see the dip in temperature when I've had the tent open.

The humidity is programmed to maintain 65% - 75%. Here's a graph for the humidity:

And the big dips you see on that one show when the tent was open as well. They match with the temp graph above.

Yeah, and that's where I'm lost on why these are taking their sweet time. They grow on mountains for dang sake lol. Why aren't they growing in my tent?!?! Jokes aside, I've had everything from herbs, peppers, catnip (gotta grow catnip for the kitties!), strawberries, etc in this tent. Germinating, transplants, and even hand pollinating mini tomatoes in the tent have all worked and had success. The only other variable that's different is the old seed, so I'm only assuming here.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidaze Everyone!!!

I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas day today! I don't have a plant update yet as they're moving along as they can and getting drier. The next watering will be a feed and I'll take pics and update the grow.

However. I was talking with the Mrs. and discussing what our growing goal was going to be next year. One thing I didn't mention at the beginning of this journal is that I tried germinating 6 seeds (2 different strains) that all failed due to old age and improper storage. @lootznbootz had a great idea to just germinate (at least try, anyway) the remaining 10 or so seeds I have and just see what happens, potentially with a SOG or something.

The only issue with doing that is light coverage. I'm in a 3' x 3' tent with a single HLG100V2 (3000k). This is normally a flowering light in a 1.5 or maybe a 2x2 space, so when he first mentioned the SOG a few weeks back I didn't think it would be feasible. Besides, I have a shelf unit in the tent so I can germinate and start my own vegetables as the wife and I have some raised beds in the backyard where we grow our own veggies and herbs.

So, the decision was made that we'd rather utilize the entire tent for cannabis and we'll figure out the veggie situation later. Sweet! To do that, I'm going to need a new light, so I went ahead and ordered the @ViparSpectra KS2500. I'm extremely excited about this light! Before it gets here next week I'm going to be taking the shelving unit out of the tent as well and properly hanging the exhaust above the light. Things are going to change in the tent that's for sure.

I dropped 3 (old) Blueberry fem photo seeds into some water and I'm going to see if I can get all three into a solo cup. Maybe they'll surpass the two alaskan purples I have currently, who knows.

Lastly, I've got an order into @Herbies Seeds for some fresh seed and amazing genetics. I'm expecting these to come in a few weeks and I'll evaluate what I have growing at the time to determine if it's worth it to continue them, or drop some new seeds.

Thanks for sticking around during this really slow growth! I appreciate everyone popping in when they do. Hopefully a new light and some fresh seed can get this tent rocking after the new year!

Oh yea I’m down to get a bit soggy! Looking forward to seeing that light seems everyone is joining the wave I almost wish I needed a new light!
I’m riding out with you for the long run brother! Can’t wait to see what the tent looks like with the additions

Thanks man, I always appreciate your insight and advice!

Speaking of, how about a SOG in a 3x3? How many plants do you suggest, how big of a pot? I already have a five pack of 3 gallon fabric pots, I'd just need to get more drainage trays if I were to use all of them. Do use netting like in a scrog? I'll definitely be reading up on sogs now.
