Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

If the soil is used and has been flushed, is it not possible for it to have become inert, devoid of any nutrients now, like coir is? maybe worth trying out the pH levels people use with coir and see how that works?

Just a thought.

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

I'm not entirely sure, alls i know is, if that was my plant I'd be trying everything on it lol except hair salon hydrogen peroxide, cos I've tried that and the plants don't like it lol

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

Antics did you get and use CalMag of any sort? I don't know anything about PH and soil because it's not something I've ever bothered measuring, I think if it was my plant I'd try the CalMag first and if that didn't work then think about either top dressing or transplanting. When I had problems it was like chasing multiple deficiencies but it was the CalMag my girls needed, it's like it helps the plant uptake other nutes from the soil somehow.

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

lol. Well so far I've increased nute levels (almost triple now what I would usually feed), supplemented calmag with some epsom with a foliar spray, and 20 ounces into the soil @ 1 teaspoon/gal, and no changes. I have added additional calcium/magnesium today. (In a massive dose of 1 teaspoon/20 ounces.. which I'm almost ashamed to admit doing :( )

Light is also about 26-28" away now too.

I have good growth on the lowest nodes, but all the nodes closer to the light, I have the same multiple stem growths coming out, but their growth has been slow lately.

I'm going to grab some lunch, and then take some pictures to put up here. I'll measure plant height, and light distance as well while I'm in there so I have something accurate. I know there's something simple I'm probably missing along the way.

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

If my lights are too close my leaves twist and distort, I feel quite cruel if I get it wrong, they look so unhappy! It would help to see your beloved....looking forward to the pics.

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

Okay, plant height is 8" / 20.3cm

Distance from light 30" / 76.2cm

And pictures:

To me it just looks like multiple deficiencies.

Calcium, Magnesium, possibly Phosphorous, and maybe others.. Combined with the problem of curling margins, which I believe was from the light being too close.

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

Blimey, Antics, looks like you're right. Guess I'd give all those nutes you've put in a few days to work and see what the new growth is like. Wish I could be of more help. Watching...and hoping for the best...

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

*Crosses fingers*, I think you're right, now the hard part is waiting for the things you've done to take effect, I know my twisty leaves never quite recovered and still look twisty but new growth is usually fine once you raise your lights. Patience is a virtue! Fingers crossed the CalMag will do the job!

Thanks brother.. I was hoping the transition to LED would have been easier for me, but it looks like I'm wayyy behind on nutes.
Shit happens, so I'm not worried about it... Just not happy with failure, ya know? I feel like I've been trying my best and things keep going south. It's frustrating at times.

Thanks, I appreciate the support! Like I said above.. it's one of those things where you think you have the hang of things since the last grow was successful, and change one thing for the the grow, and this happens. It's disappointing. And I had a goal of 3.15 ounces!

I might have to cheat a little and run a slightly longer Veg time if she pulls through :thumb:

I do understand the feeling. Although I'm a new cannabis grower, when I've got a super plant in my regular garden here and it suddenly goes pear-shaped on me, however much I've tried to do the right thing - right soil, right location - I take it personally. I guess if we didn't feel that way we wouldn't grow anything in the first place. "Sunshine and rain / Is like joy and pain" (Frankie Beverly and Maze).

And I must confess to some self-interest here. Today I've just started my first indoor grow, under CFLs to start with and then when they're robust enough, transitioning to a PlatinumLED P450.

As we used to say in Shepherd's Bush when I was a kid, "I feel ya".

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

Hey Antics. Just went thru the whole journal and subed brother.

You had a question about coco and as you already know thats pretty much all I use. Don't know where you are located but biobizz coco mix is the best I have been able to get my hands on in Europe, but when I was back in the States I found out that Mother Earth Coco was hands down the best coco mix I could find. So if you are in North America (U.S. Canada) I would go with mother earth, 0 ppm every bag I used.

About transplanting: I have had to do this with a couple of my plants (1 ganja and the rest regular plants) the best method I came across was from and old time farmer.
1- lay a tarp on the floor
2- Water your soil until its moist not soggy.
3- get a friend to help :)
4- have your friend pick up and tip the pot upside down while your hand is positioned on the soil two fingers on one side of the plant and two on the other.
5- Your friend gently picks up the pot while you balance everything with your other hand and at last have your balancing hand direclt on the soil at the bottom where the pot used to be.
6- lay your soil and plant lying on its side on the tarp. roll it a couple of times with little pressure and a good portion of the soil will come right off without hurting your roots.

hope this helps if your up to it.

I'm still a new grower too, this is my first year :) And I know that same feeling man... I take it personal too. But I also hate failure. I'm not a perfectionist by any means, but I just feel like I should be way better than this...

But.. I'm not giving up either, and I'll be taking some steps to fix this problem, this week.

Dude.. major thanks! I'm going to see what happens this week, just to give it a chance. And if it doesn't improve, I'm going coco.
But... even if things improve and this grow works perfect from this point on, I still plan to go coco or hempy for the next grow. I'm done with soil for now. I need to learn new growing methods. I'd like to try a few grows in each, and from there I'll decide which one I'm going to stick with.

And now a little update.

I have decided to reduce the light intensity, since I can't keep raising it higher. I decided on the simplest method of doing this. I am using a grey plastic shopping bag, taped at the center of the top and bottom of the bag, and hung from the light, right in the center.

So now the part of the light that is directly over my plant, is diffused, which should reduce nutrient demands, and give me a chance to catch up, and her a chance to recover.

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

getting back on this thread after having missed a bunch. Looks like you've got your work cut out for you.

First, congrats on MotM... I had no idea there were actual prizes awarded, I thought it was just prestige/bragging rights. Cool ;)

have you thought about the possibility of going back to CFL for the remainder of your veg? since you did so well with JUST CFL on your last grow, and it might give you a bit of breathing room while you work out whatever nute issues are currently bugging her. then switch back to LED for flower.

Best of luck dude

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

Doing a hempy w\coco for your next grow is going to make you want to never look back =p well, except for doc's high brix, I still wanna do that atleast twice =p
I hope everything comes together for you mate, Im sending green thoughts your way to help!

How's she looking today man?

Yeah I'd love to do a doc bud high brix, but the startup would knock the beans right out of my bag big time lol

re: Antics Perpetual Learning Experience

Hi Antics, I have been away for awhile due to health issues. I have read your journal up to this point. I had the same problem with the over exposure on seedlings with the led. I have supplemental cfl's in the corners of my cabinet and just turned the led off when I noticed the problem and let the cfl's take over for a week or so. I then started turning the led on for short periods so they could get used to them. It did work for me, but that could just be luck. I figured that if I need to wear a welding mask to look at the light it must be very intense. I hope you can save your girl. I have the most anxiety with the seedling stage so far. They don't seem to allow any abuse as they do after roots are established.

I ended up with almost 6 ounces of bud from the first grow after all was said and done. The quality is unbelievable considering all of my newbie mistakes and lack of knowledge. Thanks to you I didn't throw the works out the window and give up. This is the first month that I won't be requiring any meds from my usual source in Michigan. I made Honey Oil, Cannabutter and kief from my sugar trim and it is all good. I will be saving about $450 per month if I can keep this going. Not to mention the extra cash from selling what I don't need to two other patients that I know. They were very happy with the quality and price.

I have a new grow started finally. I have two White widow girls, two Durban Poison girls, and a mystery plant that I got as a freebie with my seed order. I am doing soil this time instead of hydro. I am in the process of building a new hydro set up for the next run. There were several things that I hated about the way the hydro equipment was so flimsy and hard to add nutes and clean.

Could you possibly help me out with starting a journal for this grow? Is it just a continuous thread in this section of grow journals? Or is there something special I need to do? Here is a pic of the addition of slide out trays to the cabinet. Makes it much easier to access all plants. I also added 2 intake fans to keep the temps lower in the cabinet. I built a carbon filter that 100% totally removes the wonderful aroma created by the stinky girls. I couldn't smell anything even during the smelliest time of flowering.

I will subscribe to your journal and follow how your power flower is doing. I think you will love the LED's after you're used to them

Yeah I'm definitely pretty far behind, and I have a ton of work ahead of me. The plant won't be where I wanted after 8 weeks Veg, so we're going to end up going a bit longer.

Thanks for the congrats! I was stoked to see I actually won man, and the prizes are seriously cool. I've been having a blast with the new roller, and I haven't used my old metal pipe since!

I thought about going back to CFL, but the only reason things are the way they are is a lack of nutrients, and I plan to have more LED grows, so I figure going back to CFL is just taking the easy way out... I gotta learn how to do this right! I'm already cheating as it is using the plastic bag lol. Thanks for stopping back in man!

Antics I don't know if you've seen this thread How To Grow With LEDs
but it might be of help.

Thanks great info there! According to that, it seems I have my height correct now... so it falls back onto nutrient deficiencies. Which is my fault. I knew LEDs caused the plants to use more nutes... but damn. This is overdrive on nutes. I'll get it nailed down eventually!

High Brix is on my list in the future! I am just fascinated by all the different growing techniques, and I HAVE TO try them all.
I have always done the outside landscaping thing in soil, so I'm more comfortable with it, but I have a feeling I'm going to enjoy coco or hempy grows the most. But we'll see when I get there!
Thanks for the positive vibes brother!

How's she looking today man?

I don't know yet! I'm a big tab user on my browser... and this tab has been open all day and I'm finally getting time to reply here. I'm heading over to the closet now to check on things, and I'll update when I have more info, and I have a new reply here to respond to that I haven't seen yet.

Ok so far the new growth that I see looks good. But that's so far... knock on wood or whatever if you're superstitious. In the past I've seen new growth go from looking healthy, to curling margins and to having spots that seemed thinner than the rest of the leaf, and the spots appeared yellowish in color. New growth also has no curling margins yet, BUT I still have the bag covering the middle of the light, and the light is still 30" / 76.2 cm above the canopy.

Sorry to hear about the health problems, hopefully you're feeling better now.
I started them out on LED, then went back to only CFLs for a couple weeks or so, then back to the LED. And I gave her LED four a couple hours for a few days before going full LED. So I tried to go slow, but the initial intensity caused some damage, and now I believe the problem is nute deficiencies. These lights are definitely intense, but the plants love them when used correctly (with lots of nutes lol). I'm fairly confident that I can save her though.

6 ounces is awesome man, congrats!! Just imagine how much better the quality is going to be after you learn more and perfect your growing technique. For me the potency has been great, but the flavor is just amazing compared to what I used to buy. It makes it enjoyable, and worth the effort to grow them. Saving $450 a month is a shitload of money! That's going to help a lot with bills, or just being able to buy something else you've wanted or needed. And the fact that you're able to help other patients is a really good feeling :thumb:

Starting a grow journal is pretty easy. Take a look at this page here: How to Make a Grow Journal That will show you the basic outline of information that people usually include in their journals.

Next open this page: Journals in Progress And at the top left, there is a dark gray/black button that says 'Post New Thread' Just click that, give your grow journal a title, and fill in whatever information and pictures that you want to include, and you'll have your journal all started.

Don't forget that the carbon wears out after a while, and needs to be replaced. I have read that it CAN be recharged, but the opinions on that vary on temperatures required, times, etc.. so it might just be easier and safer to replace it, and use the old carbon for the compost bin.
