Antics CFL Grow 2014

Well it's been a week since my last update, so I better get some pictures up here. I've been more focused on the plants lately, as I started seeing quite a few issues appearing.

Some curled leaves, some drooping leaves, a little yellowing of the lower leaves, some "burned" tips, and some spotting on the leaves as well.

I'm fairly sure my problem was not using enough nutrients, since after my first problem, I was only lightly misting the soil with nutes this time. I've also had a slightly elevated PH, and although it hasn't hit the lockout as far as I can tell, it's still a problem to correct.

The past week I've given the nutes in diluted form every 3 days to slowly build up the levels, and today will be the last day of nutes for a week. I have also been giving a misting of lemon juice and water daily, followed by a misting of water to help disperse it further.

So far, the yellowing, curling, spotting etc.. all seem to have stopped and haven't gotten worse, and the leaves on the younger MED GOM, which had the worst signs of the curling and drooping, appear to be getting better. The spotting was the worst on the oldest MED GOM, although only a few spots have appeared, there have been no new spots in the past week now.

Well nothing special or exciting yet.

I'm starting to smell the plant a little in the morning when I come in the room, and a little in the evening. It's a pleasant aroma to wake up to. And definitely makes the smell of coffee seem less interesting at 4am.

Nutrients have increased to 10ml/gallon of each now

Since starting nutes, I have noticed no new spotting, no more dead leaves, no new yellowing leaves, no more burned tips, etc...

PH still keeps on climbing but I've been able to control that to some extent using lemon juice.

Honestly I don't know the exact day I planted them, or days they sprouted.

After the first two died, I was a little pissed at everything, and decided the next time not to panic so quickly and not spend so much freaking time with the next ones :)

Going from my picture dates:
The smallest one (Quick One) is about 14-18 days from sprout. Current height 5cm/2"
The middle sized one (MED GOM) is about 24 days from sprout. Current height 10cm/4"
The largest one (MED GOM) is about 30 days from sprout. Current height 18cm/7"

Quick One and MED GOM are both Feminized and Auto. So I think it's about on time?

Both list 8-9 weeks to harvest.

I bought the auto QuickOne since I was new to all this and a little intimidated by the 18/6 12/12 switch. Now after doing this for a little over a month, I'll be sticking with just fems and regulars.

But I bought the MED GOM specifically for the higher CBD content, and it just happened to be an Auto.

4 days later.....

I've noticed some burning on the oldest MED GOM, so Nutrients are done for until this weekend, just to be safe.

PH has stabilized somewhat using lemon juice, it still peaks at around 7 as the soil starts to dry, but when I water them, the PH immediately drops to 6.2-6.8, so I'm just keeping a light misting with water a couple times a day, and it seems to be keeping the girls fairly happy.

It looks like you YOUNGEST plant, Quick One, has a few white hairs starting. I noticed them after pictures, and being too lazy to go take more, I'll have to get some closeups of that in the next picture update :) I honestly absolutely hate taking pictures of things, I have no patience for it. If I do another Journal, I'm making my girlfriend take the pictures lol.

Height:
Quick One (youngest) 13cm/5"
MED GOM 18cm/7"
MED GOM (oldest) 28cm/11"

And picturessssss!

The pics look good tho .. and it will be self rewarding when you look back at them ;)

Great looking girls, keep it going man :)

Well I've had to move the light shelf up a few inches, everything seems pretty good so far. No serious issues to really mention.
The oldest MED GOM did start growing at a slight angle, so I used a small piece of ribbon to help correct that over the last several days, and it seems to have helped so far.

The Quick one almost looks to be stretching more than the two MED GOM did when they were in this growth stage. I've got the light on top just about 2-3cm away, which is checked twice daily, and adjusted as the leaves get to be about 1cm away, and it still seems to be stretching out a bit.

Anyways, here's some Cannabis porn:

Looking great there! I dunno how much freedom you have in placing those lights, but for optimal performance, the end of the spiral should point to the plants .. not the side.

My setup is wrong in this as well .. I havent found time to rearange it yet with all the shit I had in my grow lately :(

I know this to be true, because I have a light meter that tells me so:
Intensity at spiral bottom: norm/ norm + (measured @ 2cm)
Intensity at sides: low+/norm - (measured @ 2cm)

I compared the side of the spiral to the end on lights without reflectors, and the end of the spiral is a LITTLE brighter.

At the same time, the end of the spiral of the same bulb with a reflector that is WHITE gets higher readings than both of the others, and is also better at reflecting light than an aluminum reflector.

And I learned something else today. CFL bulbs CAN not only cause light burn, but if left unchecked too long, it'll kill a whole goddamn branch.

I had a pair of bulbs with some simple reflectors inside the pots, with some 2700K bulbs adding a little light to the two older plants. One bulb tipped over somehow today, and was leaning one of the branches, and it completely dried up all the leaves there.

Live and learn. I actually noticed a leaf near the bulb had a nasty looking burned tip, which I assumed was nute burn. Now that this happened, I'm guessing it was light burn all along...

Oh well. Minus one lower branch, and we have more resources for the plant to use up top :)

I'll test the reflector thing ... as soon as I have spare change for one or come up with a DIY idea ... I'm leaning towards using plain 'ol 80g A4's and a shitload of tape.. thanks!

Sorry to hear about the branch .. I had tips of leaves burn on my vertical bulbs on a daily basis .. the plants grew harder then I anticipated every time ... untill I got carried away with nutes that is :/

Update time!

The Quick One (youngest/smallest) still seems to be stretching out, which is strange considering it's 60% Indica, so it should be growing short and wide. But I did find a video on youtube of someone else harvesting, and theirs also was pretty tall and leggy.

Quick One also seems to be suffering a nitrogen deficiency, bottom leaves all keep yellowing and eventually falling off. I've corrected the PH again, added nutes, and we'll see how it goes.

The other two, both MED GOM 1.0, are doing great. I really don't have any complaints or problems with them, and even as the PH rises, they've done quite well, and haven't shown me much of a sensitivity issue to PH, and have only shown some deficiency symptoms once, but it was easily corrected and everything is great.

Picture time!

NOTE: The oldest/tallest MED GOM has grown a few bends in the main stem as I've moved the lights, the pot, etc.. so it might appear to have been topped to the untrained eye, but in fact, it has not been topped at all.

I also pruned the stem that the dead leaves were on from the light bulb drying them out, hoping maybe we'll see some new growth or something, so we'll see how that works out. And I'm guessing I'm roughly 2-4 weeks from harvest now, depending on how fast she finishes.

Thanks for looking!

EDIT:

Plant heights:

Quick One: 23cm/9"

MED GOM: 24cm/9.5"

MED GOM: 39cm/15.5"

I figured I had some time so I'll take some pictures showing the stem of the largest MED GOM to show you guys what I mean about it kinda looks like it was topped, but when you look closer you can tell it wasn't.

Plus it's cool info for any new guys out there too.

I've included the original and one I highlighted with my amazing MS Paint skills :)

Now so far, it appears that the smaller branch there is becoming dominant, and it's almost as tall as the main stem of the plant. I'm looking forward to seeing how this works out.

EDIT: You know what.. In my big rush I forgot to trace the opposite stem to see where it goes in comparison, but it appears that the branch in the lower left of the top picture is the branch on the opposite side of them stem as the seemingly dominant branch.

I'll verify later tonight :)

is it the strain of cannabis your growing because i always get one main stem more like a tree trunk were you plant looks like a tree with no real main trunk well what im saying is your plant is much fuller than mine is there a trick to that with growing i think i need someone to hold my hand lol until i get the hang of growing well but this site has been a huge

From what I've read, most bury their seed about .5cm (1/4") - 1.25cm (1/2")

I buried my seed about 1.25cm. I do not germinate on paper towels, soak in water, etc... I lightly scarify the hull and then go right into soil.

The Strain is MED GOM 1.0 from Grass-O-Matic and CBD Crew. It absolutely does have a main stem, if you look closely at the very top picture, you should be able to see the difference in thickness between the 2 highest stems in the picture.

As for fullness, what kind of light are you using? I'm only using CFL bulbs for mine.
