When we go to S2, the pool gets even smaller, which often leads to the need to use dormant genes to complete the DNA chain, resulting in greater variation.

great explanation of an important concept in genetics. It’s easy to think that smaller pool means more stable and less variation but the opposite (kind of) is actually often true.

...honestly... closing the door, I have to get ready for a meeting that has to happen here this morning. Wish me luck!

You guys are extracting, from my brain, stuff from an intensive genetic course I took when I went back to school 24 years ago. Given I was headed into engineering, it is knowledge I haven't used since and really didn't know I retained until recently here with you guys

So far I've been good, but just now one of you is going to ask something I only remember enough of to be dangerous and I will have to go refresh my memory

Curious, how was the vigour of those 3rd generation plants?
:ciao:

Good question. :hmmmm:

There was no obvious lack, but they had a "feel" to them as they grew - kinda withdrawn. The S3s certainly weren't more vigorous, like some of the F1s I've grown.

I think dynamo1 backcrossed one to a Carnival. Maybe he'll pipe in on how that one turned out.

you are going to make me expand the genetics lesson @InTheShed
:sorry: ;)
Hemp is just a cannabis plant whose genes for THC production have become dormant.
I'm wondering if this tamping down of the THC is related to the reasons given in Amy's research for being more concerned about selfing with high CBD varieties... :hmmmm:
Wish me luck!
:goodluck:

Again :sorry:. Though you seem to be doing a pretty damn good job with the recollection thing. :cheesygrinsmiley:

It’s crazy you guys started talking about this after I read all the threads in :

Tons of good info. Took me a while to parse through because he doesn’t explain the pairing of alleles but I remeber Ed back from grade 11 science and then everything comes
Together after doing the gene pairing.
Crazy how the world works sometimes. I’m going to start this breeding project as soon as my seeds get here and you guys are right here discussing some of the info I will need. Is that the power of THE SECRET or what?

Summer almost over down under isnt it?
Yes and it’s been about the coldest wettest February ever. Today feels like mid autumn not late summer. February is usually the hottest month. We have hardly had any really hot weather at all!

And lots and lots of rain.

No complaints here - no fires. And I knew it was a wet season coming - that contributed to my decision to not grow outside this year. I don’t regret that decision at all. The conditions are dreadful for it - hardly ever warm and nearly always very humid. So I feel like I won there.
