Amy Gardner’s High Brix Dreams

am glad to see you dropped a quarter pounder Auto!

In your honour newty! And not one but 2. Had a few to choose from and newty was the deciding factor:). I’m growing them out together in a big pot (about 11.5 gal). Just tossing up if I’ll veg them a bit in something small. I’ve seen many folk transplant autos with success so I might give that a go. First time for many things... I’ll find out :D
Now let’s get growing.

How many days is your AP auto?

Wooooooooeeeeeeeeeee! QPA for the win! @beez0404 has one started now too! #letsgrowtogether

I thought I saw 2! Lol awesome

Mine is day 35 and she’s loving the switch to 12/12 and has doubled in a week. She’s top middle! I’ll get a showcase on the autos tomorrow so y’all can see them...not just stuffed in the back

Ps. She is doing 12/12 because the big ones are photo fem and they in charge here ;)

Cool! Stoney Memoirs grows DDAs in his flowering tent under 12/12 all the time and says it works a treat.

I’m still working out how big of a pot to start them in. I’ve always practiced the ‘start autos in their finish pot’ and I haven’t grown enough to have a read on how big they’ll be at 3weeks, which I figure is the cut off to upcan them. Plus they’ll be outside so many unknown quantities to discover!

Last 2 I started in the big pot had the not drying out issue and dampened off so I want to avoid that issue. This medium is a bit strange to me. Maybe there’s too much worm castings - I did use the maximum recommended amount. And the gnats. So yeah - smaller pots to dry things out a bit better early on... but is a 1 gal too big to start in... that’s mt question (kind of to myself and the world at large ;) ). I’ll br deciding sometime in the next 4 hours or so because these little bundles of potential will need soil :ganjamon:

Both my autos were in tiny pots for too long and they did not flower because of this. 3 weeks though is pushing it since my dda started flowering at day 21 :D

The DDA is the most happy I've seen her since I started giving her 12/12! Might be on to something with that sassy gal

I started my current stable of autos in solos>1 gallon>2 gallon. I have been persuaded that autos not being receptive to transplanting is nonsense as long as good transplant techniques are used. Shed does one of the best transplants Ive seen documented.

It has been said there is a growth spurt often when transplanting and I can say I have not seen any signs of stalling. I even slightly broke up the rootball before putting them in their new home. They are currently starting to stretch so if somethings gonna happen it should be evident fairly soon for me.

As I understand it, the problem with autos is when the taproot hits bottom, which can happen in a matter of days in a cup. Both of my DevilsCarnival autos started to bloom in their cups. So I'd recommend starting in at least 1 gallon, if not the final pot. If you soak a big pot a day or two earlier, it can be just right for a new seedling. The roots go straight down for days before they start to fill the sides and top of the soil.

And the problem with starting in a smaller pot first, is that you'll want to upcan before a firm rootball is formed in the smaller pot - you don't want to rootbind an auto. So a loose rootball can be kinda tricky and messy.

@Archiweedies How do you keep them from blooming in the cups?

It was InTheShed and Pennywise that schooled me on the myths surrounding taproots starting flowering when they hit the bottom. Its more likely that stressing the plant will cause premature blooming in my experience.

Excellent folks, thanks. I was waffling in thinking everyone on the far continent would be in bed... andxhere are these answers to my musings!

This is the same technique I use too and I think you’re right.

The loose rootball is a risk as you say Gray.

So now I’m tossing up if I start them together in a 1 gal ... I’m thinking I’ll LST them all the way Shed does (all the autos) and have them start closer to the centre - like if you topped a single plant. Transplanting them together as a unit would be really handy. I think I’ll just do it this way and we’ll all find out if it works, hey!?

I could just not soak the whole pot, just leave it damp like it comes out of the cooking tote. There’s the gnat issue too though and I think I’ve a better chance of knocking them in the small pot first and then if they’re still an issue after transplant, needing to keep it more wet for the gnatty treatment won’t be a problem. I think I over thought this a lot during my dark moon hibernation :battingeyelashes: but that feels like a plan.

Sounds like a fabulous plan! Let me say one last thought to the subject of pot size for autos. If you are adept at watering containers, you can certainly start in a larger container. I'm certain everyone in this conversation right now fits in that category aside from myself. I really am just learning to grow roots, and let the rest happen naturally. I have a ton to learn and I respect the crap out of you guys and gals :).

The real tragedy is when a new grower puts a seed in a 5 gallon pot and wonders why it takes forever to dry and why the plant looks overwatered. If that grower understood the dry cycle we need to build roots and how the perched water table in containers works, that person would realize why their plants are essentially drowning.
