Alaskan1's Flo n Gro Mixed Bag Grow

Why am I making it complicated?

Yep, wit all dis .5 and .7 stuff...
I just read the plants and if I use a meter it lets me know what to look at next time. The numbers themselves mean very little more than a reference point. Let me make an example, if I gave you a thermometer that only read from 60-160 cause the gauge slipped or something. Once you know that 78 is really a cold 34 you would then know how to read it. Its relative to your use not someone else. Not everyone calibrates with the same liquids or systems. So we have no rock solid standards. There will be variance in all meters and standards. How well do you care for your meters and the other guy says he does... get my drift?

This high tech society of ours has everyone thinking it can't be done without technology or it is the best way. Well I am here to tell you technology is not the answer for everything. Organic growing is proving that everyday. Put down the toys and just grow guys... its fun.

I teach archery the same way, let go of the technology and shoot instinctively. You don't use sights to throw a baseball.. or a snowball if that be the case...

Well, I agree and disagree at the same time lol

I can tell by looking at the plants if they are getting too much nutes by nute burn. I still at this point of my very short growing career cannot tell if they are getting under nuted. Just like I cannot tell by looking at the plants if they are at too high a PH level or too low. This is where the meter comes in. To me it's a valueable tool I have to use. I just don't have the years of experience yet to tell whats going on with my plants just by looking at them.
At this point in what I'm doing I can't afford to be off by a whole lot. I'm not just growing a plant or two This grow is 16 and the next starting next week will be another 18 and another 18 after that. When I get to the point I can I will start experimenting with different things just to see the effects. There will be a point and time I'll be able to though.
I do a lot of flyfishing up in Alaska. I had to start somewhere and that was with a book and going out everyday practicing. I am now at a point it's all about feel and touch. I can tell you when my line has a salmon before it's even hooked.
I will get there one day with my plants but I'm not there yet. Just like I wasn't there my first month of flyfishing. It took years.

I think you and I are on the same page my friend, I don't mean not to use the meters, its just keep it relevant. You are using them as I stated, as a test tool to let you know where you are in relationship to your goal. Ultimately you are learning what those values mean. You will see that very few run the exact same nute ppm and so on. Yours only matters to you. So I was suggesting all that chatter about .5 and .7 this and that was really not relevant to your growing skills. It is but a tool, do not depend on it. I can build a piece of furniture with a metric tape or a US standard, either way it comes out right. Concentrate on learning what you see more than how they make the tool work. Seen many a grow go south due to bad meters and bad calibrations. Like your fishing, you learn to read the water, the current, the ebbs and so on. It varies at every hole.. can only relate to Trout Fly fishing. I bet the fishing is awesome up there... how's the hunting?

There are years I don't even have to leave the yard for moose or bear :)
Usually a 5 minute drive to go duck hunting and a 5 minute drive on the atv to go fishing.

Australia is not that expensive, cheaper than I thought. Or at least the last time I looked. SO much I would want to see there, I just think its beautiful. Both places just have so much to offer in my book. Love nature and all it provides as well.

Carefull I could show up...

PETA member I am NOT

I'd be thrilled to be on a bear or moose hunt. Not sure what to do with it after that but man o man the experience would be priceless. Just to be on one if nothing else. All I know is deer and assorted CONUS wildlife. Fishing, trapping, hunting, and of course boating of sorts, but nothing bigger than the great lakes as of yet...

I'd like to visit Hawaii but Australia is much cheaper... Maybe OMM can put me up if I can get there.... Hang on the beach for a spell, tell stories... enjoy the local foods always.. Teach me OMM how to visit without breaking the bank? Is it possible? Fixed income here ya know... no to mention there will be no transport to that port of call.. would need a local friend.

Can I get there on a motorcycle from the lower 48?
