AKGramma's Perpetual Grow

Sue, I started my hempys with mature juveniles, so the roots were almost long enough to hit the reservoirs. Even then it was at least a couple weeks, till the ladies got over being transplanted into a different medium. I didn't loose any, in spite of my rinsing and man-handling the roots.

But, as everyone predicted, once the roots hit bottom, they started to grow again.

I started my seeds in peat plugs, which I set whole into solo cups when the roots showed. The solo cups have 25% soil added to the perlite/vermiculite mix. I plan to follow that formula with the mystery seeds through harvest. Somewhere in between soil-less and my light soil mix. I don't forsee any transplant shock using the same medium all through to harvbest.

I'm trying Rapid Rooters. I've been hearing and seeing good things with them. This may be the last step to securing consistent germination, although the autos should really be planted directly into their finish pots. I need to get serious about this.

I got confirmation from a family member that the buds from my first BBL harvest settles his stomach, gives him a nice body high, and lets him get a good night's sleep. This makes me feel so good, that I can help someone with my grow! I certainly don't make any money off it.

I'm learning to get the quality with the Indicas, that I didn't get with the Sativas. More lights, lighter mixture, more nutes.

I hope the AK 48's provide the same medicinal effect that the BBLs do!
I also give away to friends and love the positive feedback. :)

I just harvested a Red Poison by Sweet Seeds and the effect from the sample buds is like taking a Xanax, very relaxing and a good sleep after a few hours. Since you're looking for medicinal plants, I thought I'd post this for your reference.

BEAUTIFUL Plant, Witchy!

Mystery seed #8 finally sprouted after 14 days! I had to sand and scrape the seam to get the moisture inside. This afternoon I found a curled-up fuzzy root with the seed cover almost off the embryo. I gently dropped it into a solo cup with perlite/vermiculite and a tad of my soil mix and covered the cup with a small baggie.

Mystery seed #9 has a barely-open crack, but it looks black inside. I gave it another spritz of water and wrapped it back up. Will check it every day till it either sprouts or proves it is rotten or dried out.

Thank you! And good luck with the seed, it'll hopefully be peeking out by tomorrow. :)

Mystery seed #9's seed coat fell off today, and there is a nice-looking, fat seed inside. Still sleeping, apparently. So sprayed more water, wrapped it back up, to await a root tip. Day 15!

There are subtle scents coming from the grow room, now that so many ladies are in flower. Nothing stinky or dank, tho, which I'm happy about. One pair of ladies are 9 weeks into flower. Frilly lady's pistils look like they are near end of harvest, turning amber and somewhat shriveled, even tho she has been under flower only about a month. She's a real mystery. And no real buds yet.

You give me hope!!! 14 days thank you!!!

Mystery #9 looked fuzzy in the paper towel this morning. I had changed the towel because the old one was looking dirty. With a skewer, I gently prodded the soft spot and the rest of the seed coat came off, leaving me a perfectly formed firm embryo with a root tip. Still seems in stasis, tho. So I wrapped it up and tucked it in a darker spot. This is 16 days. The baby is being very stubborn!

Mystery sprouts 2-7 are leafing out nicely in their solo cups, under 6 23W CFLs. #8 has two tiny new leaves, and will soon join the others in the closet.

I fed all plants, including the babies a solution of unsulfered molasses (1/2 TB per gal) plus 1/2 TB/ gallon Epsom salts. When I read the molasses label, I found it had 8% Ca and 8% Mg, plus iron, in addition to the carbs. 2 gallons fed Nine 5 gallon pots in flower, 9 babies in solo cups, and 6 shrubbery starts in solo coups. Seeing as I shared it among so many plants, I'm hoping I didn't poison them with too much Mg.

I am noticing less fan leaf loss with the soil than with the soil-less mix, and sturdier plants in the bins than in the hempys.

I do have to admit, however, that I transplanted fully mature 6-month old clones from their soil containers to the 5 gallon hempys. So it is unlikely that the root mass is as full as they would have been, if I had transplanted them when they were a lot younger.

As with the first BBL lady I harvested, the flower clusters on the 6 BBLs in flower are arranged almost perfectly down each stem, as if carefully measured and placed just so. The BBLs are close to 30" tall. The 3 OGKs are forming good flowers now, but, like my other OGK grows, are dropping more leaves than the BBLs. The OGK's are only 12" tall, with miniature leaves.

I'm coming on 10 weeks for the earliest BBLs I switched in May, but they have a ways to go to fill out and show some trics.

Frilly Lady is also coming up on 10 weeks and is using up her small 3-fingered leaves very quickly. The smaller buds seem to be drying up and not filling out down low, but the upper flowers look healthy with many white pistils. She is very sticky, altho I don't see much in the way of trics through the magnifying glass. And the buds haven't filled out yet. She is acting more like a sativa than an Indica.

Checked on the Babies and Unit #2, which is currently in daylight mode. I had to raise the lights in Unit #2 as the BBLs have really grown! Like those in Unit #1, their flower clusters are spaced evenly all the way down the stems. The three OGK's look better than they did before, after adjusting their nutes and adding homemade cal/mag.

I am acquiring seeds for Arjan's Haze #1, and the descriptions say this is a big plant. With a lot of training, I should be able to keep it within bounds in 5 gallon pots. These will most likely be my biggest plants yet, and following the topping schedule, I should be able to have one or two very prolific bushes, with lots of bud sites. I'll use the 50/50 soil-soiless mix to keep the pot from getting too heavy. But I won't pop those until I've sexed and eliminated the males from the crop of mystery seeds from Nirvana.

I'm acquiring a backlog of seeds, which means I won't have to buy anymore for a while.

Mystery #8's stem base was looking very thick, so I gently moved some of the perlite to take a look. The sprout has TWO main roots! I don't see any evidence of doubling in the leaves,. but the stem has not stretched like the others did. This will be an interesting plant. I hope it doesn't turn out to be male. It seems my most interesting plants have been male. (except for Frilly Lady) :-(

The very naked Mystery Seed #9 has slightly started to unfold, but I also see it turning slightly yellow. I hope it gets going before the microorganisms take over and digest it! Day 17 for this one. Below, two views of this seed.

Here is the first pic of the first 7 mystery seeds at 17 days, plus one of two surviving clones from the BBL.
Babes_8-7-16.JPG

They all look like Indica hybrids, and are a tad wilted due to being out of their domes.

The BBl clone in the center was the result of an accidental topping of a flowering lady. She looks so much like Frilly lady, that she just might be a clone of that one. I hope so. This one still has her flowers, in spite of being under a veg schedule. She is due to be up-potted. I think I will train her into a monster mamma in the hybrid soil I'm going to mix up.

EDIT: note the turntable they are on. This makes getting to the back babies easier, and also allows me to rotate them under the lights. I have 5 more turntables to use on the large buckets I'm going to use in the future. Will make tending them much easier!

I want to share an old gardener's trick in cloning, that always works. Known as Ground layering, it is a natural way to propagate a plant, while still attached to the mother plant.

In the pic below, I show two leggy stems that I pinned down into an auxiliary pot. I showed these when I first set them to root. Today, you see substantial growth and there are flowers everywhere. So you can do this in flower, without affecting the mother plant's harvest, or in veg. Once the clones are rooted, simply cut them from the mother.

EDT: I did not scrape or otherwise damage the stems that I buried. I only removed the leaves that would be buried. But standard practice is to scrape to the cambium layer, esp if the stem is old and woody.

The microorganisms got to this seed overnight and it was mushy and orange this morning.

The babies on the turntable are showing good growth. #1, 2 and 5 have very large, floppy leaves, much larger at this stage than the BBLs had. Very strongly Indica. Already with a subtle scent, but nothing stinky yet.

Looking forward to the next couple weeks for the first ladies in flower in Unit #1. Their buds are due to fill in soon. I haven't handled them much because they are tucked into the back corner, but I expect them to be sticky and firm.

An update on the two units under flower.

Shots from lt to rt in Unit 1, which has the ladies who are closer to harvest.

Left views of 2 of the first BBLs I put to flower 2 months ago. I had to take these in the dark with a flash, so the aiming is off.

View in Unit 2, the larger unit at 3' x 3', which is currently on day shift. These were put under flower about a month after Unit 1, but are coming along nicely. The OGKs are the first 3 shots. These look healthy compared to my last OGK grows, but characteristically lanky with open flower clusters. In spite of their wimpy appearance, the harvest is pretty potent, with a Sativa effect. Changed the nutes to bloom. On a weird note, the clawed leaves open up a bit during the day, but regardless of what I feed them, the curling remains. Back row first.

This next one, which I rotated on the PC came in non-rotated. But I wanted to show how tall this BBL is in the front row of Unit 2. You can see part of the BBL next to it.

I could not get the shot of the seedlings to upload after 3 tries. But there is noticeable growth in just 2 days. Will try to get a shot later and reduce the size of the pic. I do think that these mystery seedlings are not as healthy-looking. What one gets in the free seeds category with one's order.

finally got the seedlings shot to upload! As you can see #1 is looking floppy and hungry for nutes. #2 formed two growing tips at node #1. #3 - 7 look normal to me. I think they are ready for their first feeding. I gave them some homemade cal/mag yesterday with their water, and spread some worm castings on the top of their mix.
Mystery_seedlings_8-9-16.JPG

The middle "BBL clone" needs repotting, and I have to remember to put her into a juvenile-sized container.

Try your next hempy in a perlite only mix. I suspect your mix may be holding too much water.

Lots of people seem to like 100% coco coir, but I always thought it did that. I've run 25% to 33% coir (with the rest perlite) and thought that was a pretty good ratio. I've run 100% perlite, too... But a little coir seemed to give me a little breathing room (in case I was unable to water when I had planned, or just forgot).

I guess a lot depends on the grower's preference - and the environmental conditions.

Tead: 2 of my OGKs and two of my BBLs are in perlite only, except for a tiny bit of top dressing, which I added later due to deficiency issues. All the other hempys are mostly perlite with less than 25% vermiculite in the basic mix. They all look soggy because I just watered them! ;-)

Now the seedlings are more like 50/50 perlite to soil/sand/vermiculite, with a top dressing of a few TBs of worm castings.

The problem I have with pure perlite is that the stems of the adults are not stable and the plants want to lean, even tho the roots have hit the reservoirs. I'm having to reinforce them.

My house is starting to acquire the sweet scent of mature Bubblelicious flowers! I've had two family members mention it as they came in the door! I do believe I'll be harvesting 2 ladies by the end of the month, and at least 3 more thereafter in Sept and October.

It's amazing what grandmothers can provide for their families. ;-) Make em feel good inside and out!

It is always a joy to give, heal and see the joy from people and especially family.
