AK47 Serious Seeds - First Grow - CFL - Soil

UPDATE:

DAY 6 OF FLOWER
( 47 - 57 DAYS REMAINING )

I had a look in my garden today and there were leaves touching off of the glass cooltube and they seemed to be loving it, no sign of heat stress whatsoever :

The Glass of the cooltube simply can't get hot enough to burn the plants :)

Being able to have the 250w HPS this close to the plants is better than having a 400w HPS because:

A 400w HPS at 6 Inches above the canopy puts out 63,000 lumens

A 250w HPS at 4 Inches above the canopy puts out 78,000 lumens

By being able to have the bulb this close to the plants without stress more than doubles the bulbs standard lumen output and actually makes the lumen/w ratio 2 - 3 times more efficient :)

The light has now been dropped to about 2" from the tallest top.

The highest concentration of light has been placed over the tallest branches in hope that this will prevent them from stretching much further and so that the tops that are short and not getting as much light should be able to stretch a little more to even out the overall canopy.

Here are some pictures to satisfy your eyes :)

regarding ur light advice...can I ask if u don't mind me hijacking ur thread for one min..

I'm going to order a tent by the size of 2ft 1/2 L. By 1ft 1/2 W. by 3ft H. And 400W MH/HPS light kit with a cool tube n ballast ..

Will that be too much light since u said a 250W light will put out more lumens When lowered to the canopy
Rather than a 400W higher than the canopy ?

I just don't want to burn my future grow nd screw things up..

By the way just to mention I'm going with an autoflower grow since its my first grow..
I already ordered my "BEANS" n I chose to go with :white widow autoflower by Dinafem. Nd: blue himalaya diesel from Short Stuff..

Thanks for the heads up any nd everyone. -GF- love ur ladies hope u ain't jealous

Peace

With only 3 ft of height a 400w hps would be near impossibe, you have to remember that your pots will be about 1 foot, your plants will be about 1 foot and that only leaves you with 1 more foot of headroom to which the cooltube takes up 6".

The 400w would get way too hot for your needs and would just be overkill, you would not have the space to move it as needs be. With that little headroom its not worth the risk.

I would recommend the 250w HPS it would be perfect for the capacity of your environment and you shouldn't run the risk of overheating or burning your plants, and you can get the bulb extremely close so lumen output wise this would be your best bet.

Hope this helped and good luck with your first grow :)

I totally agree ^ unless you ever plan on upgrading in the near future and in that case get a 400w.. I would almost recommend going with a bigger tent all together.. Length and width are alright but your really going to be limiting yourself on height.

Plants are looking awesome green!

edit: and yeah I agree with your reasoning for your liking of the 250w... However, by keeping the tube close it limits your footprint.. In many cases that's fine but that is why people get larger lights.. You have to raise the lights up to create a larger footprint. :)

Couldn't have put it better myself :)

Thank you teSmp nice to see you stopping by :thumb:

My bad -GF- just removed them ..

Thanx for the input on my question for the lighting
I was choosing that height in tent due to height restrictions
I'll have to work at least with a 4ft tent now ..

No Problem Sirsmokezalot :)

Take my garden as an example it's dimensions are 2.5 X 1.5 X 4, this is just a foot taller than the tent that you plan on getting. I also have restrictions that limit me to 4 foot and the 250w HPS works perfect.

With the space of that tent I would say that you would be able to run a system the same as this one :)

If you really want to get a 400w HPS you would probably need a tent that is a minimum of about 5 feet tall.

I hope this helps :)

Does anyone know how best to start feeding flowering nutes ?

Thank you

:peace:

Just like you always feed bro... Go for around the same PPM and just switch the nutrient schedule.. It's up to you if you want to feed veg nutes into flowering for a few weeks.. I never do.

I hate jumping back n forth from topics but one more -GF-

If I were to keep the 3ft tent nd add a 250W light I would be better off
Or just go with a 4ft with 250w

Thanx again for ur expert advice it's very much appreciated

I would suggest the 4ft if you have room for it, the larger the grow area the better :)

You will be less likely to run into problems if you have more room to move your lights around.

Tremendous utilisation of such little grow space GF, and the canopy work turned out so well! Really good example of overcoming adversity, sorry I only just caught up!

Glad to have you along for the ride :)

UPDATE:

DAY 10 OF FLOWER
( 43 - 53 DAYS REMAINING )

Everything is still looking good so far :)

There has been quite a bit of stretch, which I am not happy about because if this keeps up it wont be long until I run out of space :hmmmm:

I think I might just go out and buy a 250w MH bulb to replace the HPS for the next week or two of flower or at least until they stop stretching, this should slow them down as I am assuming it is the Blue light they are stretching looking for.

They are all on full strength Nutes at the moment ( BioBizz Bio - Bloom ) 5ml/l

Could Somebody Please Answer :)

The plants are about a foot tall at the moment, does anybody have any suggestions on when to start clearing or pruning the small shoots and leaves underneath the canopy that aren't getting much light ?

At 10 days into flower would it be too late to risk topping the most vigorous tops or the ones that are too tall ? Or would I just run the risk of the branch turning hermi ?

Here are some pictures, I can start to see Bud Sites :)

Hi Greenfingers,
How are ya? I just spied some of your pics, and your Ms sativa looks nice mate:) Kinda like my crazy girl atm! It is my first attempt at LST, and i started late so she went a bit hay-wire, a 2nd main branch started and when that was equal i tethered that and so on and now i have 12 main larger branches, with secondary shoots coming thru the centre canopy as ive pulled the larger branches aside, and opened her centre up for lighting there.. 2 of these secondary shoots are now a bit taller than my mains! I tied them down abit in hopes others would catch up, which they would have - if the 2 shoots didnt keep going skyward!! I fear a massive bunch of shoots filling her centre soon, which im going to have to train also. I already am to a few..
Im trying to get her close to 4ft during Veg, before flowering her, hoping she will get least 5ft in height. If she does im hoping to get a larger harvest than my previous grow which was a basic xmas tree not topped or trained,8 oz dry cola's and popcorn.. Even if i better it by half an ounce ill be happy with that.
But yeah, your new shoots that are coming thru on ur girls are great! I love seeing each morning s growth:) Cindy usually gains at least 1 inch height and fills out pair of fans to about 6 cm.. Im trying to stretch her some for a few days - ive raised my light 8cm, and will see how she looks in the morning.. If she looks like she is happy and has nice growth still ill leave it for maybe 3days, and see her height gain in between this time - i record all these things on paper:) - and then after that time, if im right, her growth will be enough to let me raise the light again but not as much as the distance over the 3 days, to let the new shoots get some more intense light, before a week later, doing it over again!:)
Im trying to get her to my target height, without making her matchstick size branches!!! All her branches, and the shoots that are the largest thus far are solid, strong and healthy foliage.
So i think that your current grow will be similar in that it has many healthy shoots and should hopefully give you alot of buds!:thumb:
Goodluck with them buddy, hope that they give you some juicy buds ay! Nice work.. Later mate, SMOKEMUP..

Looking good. From the looks of the earlier seedling stage i thought you were going to have some stretching going on, but it looks like there's no problem with that ! Have you found any vent problem fixes yet ? Subbed ! :)

Hey Smokemupm8 nice to see you joining in :)

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement it is much appreciated :)

If you are going to grow her to 4ft during Veg would you not expect her to stretch to at least 6ft or 7 ft considering she should have nearly doubled in size by the end of flower ?

So far these girls have stretched from about 6" to about 18" and I'm hoping they don't stretch any further because I'm running out of space fast :hmmmm: ha ha

I just had a look at the plants on your thread, you seem to be doing a really good job, they look super healthy :thumb:
Ill be keeping up to date with your thread :)

If you read the last update you will be able to see that I actually do have some problems with stretching :P ha ha

If you have a flick back through the pictures you can see that an Inline fan was installed and that solved the vent problems :)

UPDATE:

DAY 12 OF FLOWER
( 41 - 51 DAYS REMAINING )

Stretching was becoming way too much of a problem so a 250w MH bulb was installed on day 10 alongside a 125w Blue CFL to try and stop any more stretching.

Checking on the plants today and they seem to have barely stretched at all :) I really should kept running the blue light through the start of flower for the stretch period as this most likely would have kept them at the height I desired :P but at least I've learned for next time :)

The MH will probably be kept running for about a week or at least until the stretch is over and then the HPS will be re-installed and hopefully there will be room to keep a 125w Blue CFL in there alongside it for a nice mixed spectrum.

There is even more bud development today and no height gain :)

Below: Some more Bud Development :) The MH Bulb is much better than the HPS for taking pictures.
