420 Magazine's Official Girl Scout Cookies Comparative Grow By Modest Grower

Thanks everyone for stopping by, your feedback and tips are much appreciated. @BakedARea I ordered the purosmart compact reverse osmosis filter. I ordered it as it was recommended and seemed good enough. I also planned to hook it up to the hose so I could fill the system up directly rather than carrying buckets.

The issue I am having is with the connection point. I don't think I have any threaded faucet ends to attach to and the threads to connect are smaller than a garden hose. I think I need an adapter of some sort.

I assume your having trouble adapting your hose to the little 1/4" hoses for the RO system?

If so, what you are looking for is a "sharkbite push connection X 3/4" FGHT adapter". Here in the US, 3/4" FGHT is your standard hose size, not sure about other countries. and the sharkbite size just needs to match your tubing.

I had a little trouble finding this part as well :thumb:

Pictures please? You're in the US right?

Good suggestion here MG!

But if you want to be able to quickly disconnect or make changes, you may want to add a few more adaptors to make life easier.

I'm confused when you say that it is not a threaded hose connect. So how do you connect a hose to it?

If you can add a 2 way or 4 way port if you can use it, I would do that. Then you can have a dedicated outlet for your hose, RO, and whatever else you want to add.

The sharkbite connectors have a little collar on them that releases the tube when you slide it in towards the connector. At least the plastic ones i have do. I usually pop it off the filter tube to screw the adapter onto the hose then stick it right back on the tube and it locks itself.

Hey, sorry I haven't responded, the 9 to 5 is giving me a beating but its how I pay the bills. Anyway, @Michael Hunt has the solution I will be pursuing! So @BakedARea I did a bad job explaining but the filter has a piece that is supposed to screw onto your sink where the screen is at (where water comes out). I don't have that option at the place I am renting. But, I thought what if I could hook it on the hose instead. The hose has a screw but its not as fine of thread as the filter and bigger diameter. @Michael Hunt solution fits the garden hose and goes into the small plastic feed tube which is perfect.

This piece screws onto your sink faucet where those screens go and you can flip the switch and it goes to the filter via a little hose or straight out like the faucet.

Here is what I wanted to screw that on to (obvious issue)

Solution screws onto the garden hose hookup and is a quick release connection for the small plastic hose that feeds the filter. Hope this makes some sense. I always mess this type of thing up. Thanks again for the help, ordering the part asap

That all makes more sense now! Lol Yup, that totally works.

Apparently all these years of picture books would explain my difficulty in comprehension!  :ganjamon:

Good update too. Roots! I'm looking forward to seeing the giant mass of them.

Happy Thursday everyone, almost to what is a long weekend here in Canada. Looking forward to rolling one for old Victoria. Anyway, a quick day 14 update and a request for some advice.

Here is the happy one of the two:

Here is the one I am worried about. It turned very quick after yesterday.
20210520_163035.jpg

The two bottom leaves turned really dark and just not happy in general. You can also see some dark spots on the edges of the leaf I am holding up. Maybe even some slight nute burn on a tip or two and these small brown spots on the bottom leaf which I saw some very tiny ones on the other plant.

Environment and PH is all great except last night my humidifier ran out so it was like 30% rh for a while. Only other thing I am wondering is if I should pick up some cal mag. Oo and the troubled one has some roots I can see coming out of the rockwool that are getting hit with light maybe that is part of it???

I'm a rookie at trouble shooting so please any advice is greatly appreciated.

Here are the two hanging out with the humidifier rocking

Happy Friday! I had to make an executive decision and decided a res flush and some calmag was what I felt might be the solution. I just finished and have everything dialed back in. As you can see from the pictures, the issue progressed rather quickly. These bumps in the road are just me figuring out how to grow in hydroponics. Hopefully, I read the issue correctly and we will see some improvement in plant health. Have a great weekend everyone!

Day 15:

Hey @Modest Grower sorry to see the little one turn on you so fast. Everything moves quickly in hydro as I'm sure you're starting to get the feel for. Thankfully, fixes and recoveries are just as fast :high-five:

What are you keeping the PH at today?

We use this chart below to gauge where the ph gets set based on growth.
pH-availability-chart.jpg

For the wee ones, we tend to keep their juice down around 5.5-5.6

Then start rising in flowering to around 6.0 to cut back the nitrogen :thumb:

Happy Friday @Michael Hunt thanks for the chart and the additional info on where you typically keep PH on the various stages. This led me down a very informative thought process.

To answer your question first, I was keeping the ph around 5.9 but now brought it down to 5.5. What clicked in my head was I went to go check the ph to give an accurate response and my ph had climbed. That is because my chiller was doing its thing and brought the temp down after the res change. So, I need to check the ph at the temp I have the res set at and make sure the res stays there.

Without going into great detail I will say my res temps moved around a bit so it is safe to assume my ph was bouncing around as well. I do also think I needed some cal mag added but the ph issue would cause issues on its own I am sure. I never learned anything like this in class so it is new but super interesting. Thanks again @Michael Hunt I feel a lot better about the future of these wee ones

Sounds like you've got it under control :high-five: Since we are talking calmag, Are you mixing that one in first?

Short answer is no......ugh oo haha what is the importance in the order? Thanks again, I really appreciate all of the info as you can tell I really need to do more research. I normally like to learn hands on and its hard to know what you don't know but I am off to a bumpy start haha (off to Google)

Ok found some good info on the importance of the order. I will definitely follow that order and hopefully get the RO running and maybe just do another res change to start with RO and do the proper order. I actually mixed mine in 5 gal bucket batches and did the cal mag, then the nutrients in each batch

It does seem to be helping. The one that looks healthier is starting to loosen back up and the leaves are slowly (relative term) rising. I chopped the worst leaves off on the one that was really struggling and I haven't seen any additional issues and it is continuing to grow so we are at least pointed in the right direction.

Day 15 seeing signs of recovery (I think)

Honestly, ive forgotten why your supposed to do the calmag first lol. Something to do with settling ph swings from what i remember. You’ll get the feel for it pretty quick, just gotta stay on your toes in the beginning. You’re definitely on the right track :high-five:

Happy Saturday everyone. Things look a lot better in the tent this morning. I will post a picture of those two later and we can see how they are doing. Much less drama for the lady in soil. This is day 12 for her and she is just cruising along. Enjoy the weekend everyone!

Photo dump morning of day 16 from the tent. The first one looks great to me still. As a first timer to the medium I was expecting some bumps but thanks to good genetics and the great help here at 420 these ladies live to grow another day. The less healthy of the two seems to be happier after the res change. The brown spots stopped appearing and it seems a little happier in general. It isn't the healthiest or happiest yet but we will get it dialed in for her in no time. Keep pushing. Happy Saturday!
