300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

What is the heat output like complared to the HID? Would you say it's 50% less, 20% less? If these really do cut down on heat i would be very interested in them.

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

i cant speak for the 300w system, but i have the glh spectra 120, it certainly will get hot but not as much as even 100w of cfl. im sure ss will chime in about the 300.

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

sorry to go off topic but siscokid is that a bass or pike you caught in your avatar? i was going to look through your gallery but its 45 pages thick.

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

While we await a smoke/taste report, I've a couple observations:

This demonstrates the strain's potential nicely; looks very good.
TRF in hempy is viable.
Good yield for tent size.
The Spectra 300 now looks reasonable for its price.

Once again, I've learned unexpected tricks and refinements on your thread.
Thank you, Setting Sun :adore:

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

Wow, simply amazing Mr. Sun... you'd be amazed at how often this grow is referenced on other sites... 420 Magazine looks very good compared to the competition with growers like you doing comparisons like this... much better signal to noise ratio if you know what I mean... Hat's off to you and the staff at 420 for supporting growers like you.

(edit) Can't wait for the smoke report!! I find PPP to be a great reminder of the old school buzz... :smokin:

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

Great job, Setting sun. What were the temps around the led itself, at the light? I have a 700 watt led that runs about 101 at the light itself but a little over an inch away it drops to 94, my closet runs from 76 during lights off to maybe 91 at canopy height during the hottest (or coldest)days. Humidity is between 25 and 58, usually rises just after I water

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

Got back into town later than we planned yesterday, so it was too late and I was too beat after the long drive to post the smoke report and bud pics, so apologies for the delay, but I should be able to do so tonight.

I appreciate the questions and will catch up on them tonight also.

We had a very merry Christmas indeed at my son's home, and hope everyone had a great holiday!

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

Well played SS. Thank you for sharing. Much respect from me to yourself.

Glad your Christmas was well, and I welcome you to a wonderful end of 2010, and the amazing beginning of 2011.

Much respect.

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

Nice turnout. They ended up being much closer then anticipated. 7 gr is pretty close for four plants. After the holidays I'd love to know the bag appeal of both products if you would please. Once again SS, great job and thank you for all the effort and knowledge put forth. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family and to all here.:bravo:

thank you molotov!

they ended up closer than I thought they would, based on how the buds felt when I trimmed them, but I think I know why and I'll go into it when I post the smoke report.

best wishes to you and yours bro ;)

Hey SS, Great job on the weigh-in!! Merry Christmas, looking forward to the smoke report!!

thanks phil, and Merry Christmas to you too! Smoke report is coming up ;)

Great grow, great reports SS thank you.... and Merry Christmas to you and yours, and everyone here....:peace:

thank you!

and Merry Christmas to you too BlueDog ;)

Preeeetttty work... now get to smokin' :grinjoint:

Happy Holidays

:peace:

It has been at great personal sacrifice, but I have been diligently collecting data for the smoke report, even as we speak, or type, or something ;).

Hope you and Mrs. Horse had a great holiday ;).

Nice results. Good haul ESP considering some of the problems and the runt plant. How does each side bud compare density wise now?

thank you Karr ;)

I'm going to be experimenting with a lot of different grow styles, so things will get dialed-in, and no doubt dialed-out, as a result of not focusing on the same grow style, but I'm not ready to do that yet, so I'm OK with my yields going up and down until I narrow things down.

wow thats pretty close, bad appeal if one of the big factors now.

Happy Holidays my friend.

Happy Holidays to you too Irish!

stay tuned ;)

pretty close there.
cant wait for some dry buds pics, mmmmmmm

thanks again for doin this :bravo:

comin' up staffy ;)

thank you!

Fantastic details! Great work MR SS:bravo:

thank you sisco!

Looking forward to the pics and smoke report, SS!
:goodjob:

thanks Zombo!

thank you Go ;)

and may you have a very green 2011 ;)

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

I'm still fascinated by the differential in stickiness (HPS gooey, LED tacky), and in potency (LED more so, HPS less so)

Is this a fluke?
Does this mean the LED lets you get that much closer to 100% of the plant's genetics capability?

Inquiring minds want to know ;)

I don't know what may be at play or causing any differences, but I've heard other reports of LED-grown cannabis having good potency, so who knows?

One factor could be the difference in radiant heat, which we know degrades THC, but the spectrum is very different between these lights, so would be interesting to have a lab analyze the buds.

My inquiring mind sure wants to know, but in the meantime, I will continue with my selfless empirical research :rasta:

The LED light ran significantly cooler than the HID light, which required air-cooling in order for me to be able to use it. The weather was much warmer when this grow started, with ambient temps in the high 70's/low 80's, and without air-cooling, the 400w HID was running 10-12 degrees above ambient, in the high 80's/low 90's, which won't work with my limited headroom, so it had to be air-cooled.

With the same exhaust fan, the LED light only ran 5-6 degrees over ambient, and I could use it to grow year-round without having to clutter my tents up with ducting.

As the plants grew larger, the temperature differential between the tents increased until the HID tent was running 3-4 degrees hotter than the LED tent, and I had to double the cfm rating of the exhaust fan in the HID tent, from 100 to 200cfm, in order to equalize temps.

So, my experience in this grow is that the LED light ran significantly cooler, and another benefit is that it throws less radiant heat down at your plants, which makes it easier to keep your ladies comfortable and happy.

I'm going to report on the strain, Pure Power Plant from Nirvana, and then report on any perceived differences between the LED and HID buds.

This was a low-odor strain to grow, and it's also very mild to smoke. There's a mild piney flavor, almost mentholated, smooth to the point of bland, but smokes pleasantly enough.

The effect, however, is not at all mild :rasta:

PPP's effect is a strong, pure, energetic cerebral high that lasts for a solid 3-4 hours.

There's a strain called headband that I've never smoked, but about 5 minutes after smoking PPP, I feel this band of pleasure around my head, and I'm doin' fine ;)

I'm growing some PPP in soil to see if that provides more flavor and character than the coco, but either way, I'm planning to continue to grow it because I think the effect is special, and I don't seem to be developing a tolerance for PPP as fast as I do for other strains.

Excellent daytime smoke when I need energy to get things done, but if I take more than 2-3 hits I'm just chasing bunny trails ;).

For me, Pure Power Plant is pure pleasure plant :rasta:

Now, as to LED/HID.

Bag appeal goes to LED for frost and to HID for color. The LED buds sparkle more. The HID buds are a lighter shade of green and are a little more colorful.

Density is the same for both. The LED buds felt denser during the grow, but with moisture levels equalized, they feel very similar now. Again, I think LED plants are significantly lusher and juicier than HID plants. Both groups of buds are fairly solid, but not rock hard.

Both groups have the same aroma and flavor, but the LED buds smell and taste a bit stronger.

As far as effect, the results mirror the scissor hash from each group that I smoked and compared, with the LED buds providing a somewhat stronger, spacier, and longer-lasting high than the HID buds.

Nothing wrong with the HID buds, but so far I prefer the LED.

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

I had wondered about taste. I've noticed that LED plants tend to be a darker green than HID plants (in general, any ways). I wondered if the additional chlorophyll (if that is what is making the LED plants darker green) would require additional or different curing in comparison to lighter green, HID buds. Good to hear aromas & taste are just fine!

Well, if I had to select a winner based on the above data... :hmmm:
I'd say Setting Sun, you sir are the winner, hands down!

Thank you for proving proof that LED and HID cannot only exist together, but actually grow side by side, or in concert with each other and not damage the time/space continuum. Who would have thought?

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

Oh.. also...

I was wondering about the stem mass. Do you find some of the weight on the LED side wasted, due to thicker or denser stems? In my short experience, I seemed to notice a trend in that direction, but haven't had an opportunity to test any theories.

re: GrowLEDHydro 300W LED vs. 400W HID Demonstration

Awesome SS both the HID and LED buds look great. :goodjob:

Have never tried PPP myself, but it sounds right up my alley. Enjoy your top shelf meds! Thanks again for doing all of this. I can't imagine how many people you have helped out with this comparison grow.

Great reports SS thank you! I've now added PPP to my list, it sounds perfect.

I have to commend you for your dedication to researching the smoke reports. If your enthusiasm ever wanes and you need an intern to fill in just give me a call :tokin:
