300W LED 2x4x5 Tent Soil Grow

Yea building your own raised garden bed can get a little pricey.. making one out of a kiddie pool like that is a great cheap way of doing it. Turtle sand boxes were the shit back in the day lol

Today i would like to talk about defoliation a bit.. it seems some people have a slight misconception about defoiling. People say your buds get fat and juicy from all the fan leaves and that just isnt true. You dont need a million fan leafs to grow big colas, just a few here and there. I can say without a doubt that i feel like i defoiled my plants perfectly and i took off A LOT of fan leaves at times. My colas are big and strong now and i feel if i had left more fan leaves they would have just gotten in the way and would have been a waste of space and energy for the plant. I know fans are used by the plant to store food and energy then in hard times it uses those leaves up and they die off. Defoiling also helps light get to all parts of the plant and that is extremely important imo. Lots to talk about on the subject, what are everyone's thoughts on defoiling?

Agree toast. No sense in spending your money on a light with great par and then block it all with fan leaves. Also the plant does waste energy keeping those leaves alive. When you take them off it focuses that energy up. You plants are a true testament to the procedure.

you know im really torn on the subject, i have done a little defoliating on my girls and honestly want to do more cause im just not seeing great light penetration lower on my girls. my big one cara is roughly 2 1/2 ft tall and its just so dark near the bottom but ive read so many opposing opinions on defoliating it makes me nervous to go too far.

This is exactly why we need to do our own research and come to our own conclusions. No matter which way you go, there will always be some "expert" that will tell you how wrong you are :thedoubletake:

Yes in some cases, like defoiling, its better to see what works best for you imo. Other peoples opinions are great and factual evidence is even better but sometimes its best to go with your gut and find out what works best for you. I did and i am 100% happy with what i did i literally regret nothing i did on my first grow except that i was feeding too many nutes, a common mistake in any grow im sure. Ive learned from my mistakes and i cant wait to apply what ive learned to my next grow.

From what ive seen with my plants, i took off around 50-75% of the fan leaves and they showed no signs of stress from it. Im positive it helped my buds grow even bigger cause they didnt need to support the life of the leaves i took. I know its weird and feels unnatural to cut leaves off your plants but i truely believe it helps them so much. Also my inlaw who is a professional grower told me they dont need all those fans to make big juicy buds so i didnt decide this on my own i did have help.

He said something yesterday that i wont forget either and thats you really should dry your buds a minimum of 10 days.. if you dont they WILL smell like hay and they wont ever smell good like they would with a proper dry. Maybe thats why so many people on here complain of their buds not smelling that great after the cure is cause they only dry them for a week if that. Another random thought and subject starter lol

Im pretty new to this but it would seem that how you grow plants will determine how much and which parts are defoliated and how often. Aside from the age of my plants i like how theyre shaped and the center is only fan leaves no buds in the middle just colas around the outside.

If you dry your buds to fast they can still smell hayish/grassy even after cure but if you dry them slowly and evenly after a good two weeks in cure the terpenes should be more pronounced. But ten days seems a bit much. I will say that imo to many people jar their buds to soon. Most times they can seem Overdried when their not. Notice how they will feel super dry and when you put them into jars they get moist again

Yea i agree completely agemon, i really like the shape of your plants they were grown well.. you did a great job man!

I still have a blunts worth of bud from that branch i cut and yea the little buds smell is very hay like cause i dried them too fast infront of that space heater.. i have them in a jar with a boveda pack but i think they will always smell like that cause of it. I probably should just smoke it and not even try to cure it since i dried it so quickly. Idk cannoi thats just what he said man. I cant say its accurate cause ive only quick dried that one branch but he does it for a living so i would imagine it would cost him his job if it wasnt accurate. He definitely knows what hes doing though ive seen the bud he grows and god damn dude its impressive to say the least. Hes got some real big donkey dicks guys lol

Lots of fun going on in here... Now I want a kiddie pool... or a turtle sand box, those were cool too...
There was one up my street on way home it was gone. Lol

I like defoiling but if let stay more trichromes can build up on other leaves giving you better shake too. Bit its a touchy subject for sure. My thoughts anyways.. . .

man i keep looking at my girls wanting to take fan leaves off, did you keep the ones high up on the colas or did you chop those too?

Awesome subject as ive had alot of questions about this and whether i should defo or not.

Examples of where i cut a leaf on one side then left the other, most of my colas look like this. Notice im holding the fan leaf on the one side and the other side there is no fan leaf.

An example of where i cut both fan leaves and left the buds.. its the middle of the plant so the buds arent great.
