1080w LED Inferno

thank you. for the bottom of the plant are you meant to trim the bottom so that there is at least 6 inch. from soil to start of branches?

Hey Irish, I don't mean to jack your journal with a pruning sidetrack but couldn't help jumping in here...

I've been experimenting with heavy pruning of fan leaves and think the guidance from TS is very good - leave the leaf if it's not blocking light, tuck it aside if it is, and if it's blocking light and can't be tucked aside then cut it off.

That said, I'm doing a combo of ScrOG and LST in my current grow and as the plants have been bent and twisted at 3 weeks in to flower I've cut off almost all of the fan leaves.

On the plus side, I have twice as many colas in this 2-plant grow as I did in my previous 3-plant grow. Potential down-side: the buds might be smaller. Time will tell...

p.s... my inspiration for heavy pruning was Mike's SLH LED grow. He chopped virtually all the fan leaves and the buds went crazy.

Nice idea. Another nice idea would be duplicate grows in which one fixture had the glass removed and the other one had it untouched. But that seems unrealistic when it is a given that the unshielded light will produce more (and who would willingly set up half of a grow to produce less, lol?).

Nice LST post, BtW. Can't REP you again yet though (tried).

ya that would be kinda hurting ur self doing a test like that. it would be the same idea as doing an hps grow one with the glass out of the reflector and one with the glass on the reflector. we all know the glass in will be better in the temps and conditions were idea for growing..

oh ok cool, i think i might have to try this lst. thank you. what do u think about clipping fan leaves off, i have read it is good to do, not good to do it cuz thats where the bud gets most of it energy type thing, i also heard it is good to do towards the end of flowering to stress it and let more light in at the last moment. so many says out there, whats your opinion? what parts of the plant to trim is ok?

the trimming topic is one of those ones 50% will say to do it and 50% will say not to.

This is what i do, if i have a big plant i lollipop then. remove around 1/3 of the lower branches and leaves that wont receive light so all your doing is wasting energy to those buds that will become popcorn (small buds) buds at the end. I rather use that energy for the top colas.

as far as trimming the upper fan leaves..well, that can be tricky, i dont like doing it unless its shading a bud that has potential to became big. if you do cut those fans leaves only cut half of that leaf or whats needed to allow light. their leaves are the solar panels. What my trick is, i tuck those leaves back you can use a paper clip or what ever, but doing this i kill 2 birds with one stone.

Plants do get their energy from the leaves. They're literally nature's solar-collectors (and energy storehouses).

It seems to me that a fan leaf is there to support the part of the plant that is above it. So removing a leaf might help light get to the lower areas of the plant, but at the expense (no matter how small) of the higher buds.

In late flowering when nitrogen levels are low and the plant is consuming its stored resources, those fan leaves often yellow and drop on their own.

I have seen a journal where the plants were really leafy and something caused them to wilt and sort of "stick" to the buds. That wasn't pretty - but it's kind of unusual and the resulting mess made some excellent hash, I believe.

Make sure that the buds you are considering removing leaves to allow more light to are in fact worth the removal. If they're going to end up being cooking buds or if you're likely to lollipop-prune the plants then I wouldn't.

Before removing anything, it's a good idea to see if simply rearranging the plant will achieve the same results.

Many will remove fan leaves, many will not. Your best bet would be to grow one plant (of the same strain) each way and decide for yourself.

Once again excellent post by you. very nicely said.

very nice post. and i am always down to here how ur test goes please keep me posted.

Now with mike he plant turned out great. i am shocked but my questions are this?
1. How would the plant look if he didnt trim off the leafs? better? or worse? its hard to say maybe he could have gotten more?

2. maybe its a strain thing? some can dig it and some cant

3. maybe the leds made this possible some how the plant got what it needed threw the sugar leaves because the LED was pure light spectrum it needed?

the only way to know is do a side x side. Ive heard of others doing this on 50% or their crop and the ones that didn't get trimmed were all more yield. but like i aid maybe its a strain thing. i for one dont want to take that chance and do whats been working for me. Their has been a few grow where i thought if i trimmed i could have gotten better yield in fact my last HS plants i felt that way because the foliage was very dense. but the weird thing is i had buds that received no light on the bottom that were nice and fat, so that tell me the leaves did it.

how long do u LST for?

i LST threw veg, you want to do it when the stems are soft and not hard and thick where you would snap the stalk. I wait for them to get 10" then bend them over one time and every other day i pull the string more and more until my main top is equal or a little lower them the other branches then i leave her alone. you just want to trick the plant by letting it think the other branches are the new tops and keep everything level and even so you have a nice falt canopy. I also put another string on the bottom part of the stem and a support for the roots dont get yanked out, just have that one going the opposite way ur bending her so theres equal force on both sides.

heres some pics i just took to show you what i am talking about.

see how i have them tied down? remember this is just the way i do it, tons of different ways. i only time them down one time because i dont have to worry about plant height.

you see how many tops i am getting not because i bent the main stem over? i am tricking the plant

hi irishboys,
im new on here, i just a 180w from glh, which should be here very soon. i am askin u cuz u seem u know alot with these LEDS and i am growing 3 small clones, grandaddypurps, bubblelicious and carnival, i am using the fox farm nutrient line. have u tried these nutes before? i am trying to get the most for my yield. are there any recommendation u can give me, like how far to lave lights , or even dont do three, maybe just 2 plants. its my first time growing and ill be starting in a week, any info that u can give me would be very appreciating.
thanks
im not irishboy, but welcome to the jungle....you'll love it here...lavendar
sorry irish if i highjacked ....lavendar:peace:

irish,
not sure exactly what the pro tekt is supposed to do, but put that and some karma in the water, and in just one day the plants look and grew better....they must have really been deficient in something....put the "stank" on all of them tonight....figured, why not....the dark force stuff....wasnt too bad, but the hubby can not stand it....needs clothes pins me thinks....later, lavendar....told him you were not fond of the smell either...:peace:thanks again for the help....

pro tekt does a little of everything. google silicon for plants and you will see tons of info

hey i was wondering if anyone knew how to get those singal cola plants from clones? I have a friend that grows clones and some how he gets these clones that are around 12" and its just one 2oz bud the size of a football. he wont say how he does it?

I know from seed if you go 12/12 this will happen but how is it done with clone? its some way he trims them i think? its not lollipoping them either. i cant figure it out.

See my grow, I've got a random strain out of the bush, which I grew from seed 12/12.

Its about 25cm high, and has buds everywhere appearing....im a little pissed about having to fly out in 3 weeks and not getting them to maturity, but that's how i is.

As for buds like footballs.......cant answer that!

But if he gets clones then....that would change a few things.

They do have single colas, mine just grew really quick once it rooted and then flowered.

peace out
