The photo period is what tells a plant to continue putting on vegetative growth or start flowering. More than 12 hours a day and it will produce leaves and get bigger. Less than 12 signals time to start flowering. A lot less than 12 hours, like ten, tells the plant it's getting close to fall and therefor it's time ramp up bud production in a last ditch effort to get pollinated before it's too late.
 
Hi Wiz. I use both the GLR and the DLS and think it's the only way to go. The diminishing light makes the resin production to me anyway really good. The first Sour diesel that is grew it was the regular light schedule and then i did a sea of green of sour diesel and it was so sticky it was hard to dry. Plus a really money saver.
 
So I guess I should think about this now. I only have 14-21 days till harvest.

Plenty of time to reduce the photo period once or twice. I wouldn't go from 12 to 10 all at once, but 12 to 11 then 11 to 10 two weeks later sounds reasonable.

This is the schedule I follow all the way threw each growing cycle. I go straight to 10/14. Which to me is the same as DLS but straight to the point if you will.

12hrs of light and 12 hrs lights off will put the plant into flower. So when you add the 1 hour of light in the middle of the dark period it destroys the hormones which builds up and keeps the plant(s) in veg.

Why dont you tell us a little about your self? Are you familiar with gardening, just getting your feet wet? By the way welcome to 420!
 
I've been a private grower for 23 years now, hydro only, sea of green in a pot in pot system. Small plants, 60cm max but have just built the courage to go,public and learn and share knowledge. See I'm learning all ready lol. I've just purchased a new set up and needed to expand my knowledge to grow bigger plants and less of them. 50 plants is commercial here in NSW so I have to watch my self. My new set up I will,post on a journal. It's a coco coir 28 lt air pot system with Tropf Blumat auto drippers. I'm in a 2.4 m *2.4 m grow lab with 4*600w Quantum digi ballasts with the new Phillips Gavita digi HPS bulbs. Day night thermo fan and heating controle and can max extraction. External Eva cooling and gas co2 burners for heat and co2, obviously. It's all on its way from supplier so will post shots in the journal as I set up. Plants under way in my hydro at the moment to get the clones together for the set up. Should be set up next week. I grow Next Gen Grapr God for two years now but my people want some current winners so I'm germinating Cali Girl Scout Cookies and DNA Holly Grail Kush to keep them happy. They should be nice from all accounts. Any suggestions one high CBD medical as I'm growing for a great friend who has cancer, it's the only medicine that works for all him pain etc. he's in a government experiment that will help lead to legal meds we hope. Anyway, that me. Will post journal next week. Would be great to get input from you guys as you all sound very experienced and up to date. I'm an old fart and have been paranoid of the Internet until now.

Yea were all some great gardeners here in this 420 community. Great personalities as well. You just met one of the greatest personalities on 420 the good ol Sir Fish :)

Mr. Messy sounds like you have a great mind behind the works in progress. I would like to follow your journal when you get it up and running to see those good strains you named. Havent heard of the Next Gen Grapr God sounds like an interesting strain. As for the hydro system what kind are you planning on running DWC, RCDWC, Aero, Ebb drain and Flow, hempy?

Thanks wixhigh. Fish cakes was my first like, nice to meet you sir fish, and you wiz. I've built my own hydro system. Couldn't find one that suited me in the early days of hydro. It's a small pot in pot system that sits in return tubes to the res. I have a air stone in each pot and use hydro stones as the medium. I've always used Phillips Son-T agro HPS bulbs for the split light spectrum. Work real nice in veg and bloom and no need to swap or run two bulbs. They feed 15mins on and two hours off. H&G nuts with shooting powder at the end, that stuff rocks. If their healthy. It's real fast, one week veg with established clones and 8-9 weeks bloom. I've all ways run a perpetual system as it saves so much time, pick every 8-9 weeks without fail. T many plant though hence the change
Here's a shot from today at 4.5 weeks total with 8 clones taken from each plant already, there's 4 plants there, sorry bad pik. Grape god is from Next Generation seeds, very popualar in OZ with boutique growers
