I don't see any lollipops...my plants are lollipopped....unless maybe I missed something, that's how I was taught....by weed farmers.
The side growth is termed exactly what it is, side growth, or lateral growth, from lateral or side meristem. A lollipop grows up...straight up...from lateral meristem, which has been reconfigured into apical meristem, by the action of positioning it in a horizontal position, which causes auxins to accumulate in the stem where they normally would not, accounting for the change...from side growth characteristics, to apical characteristics. The buds get fatter than they would if they grew from the sides, it also allows for more even light exposure to previously shaded areas. Farmers call the form "open centered", which is the way some fruit trees are grown.....for example the peach. If you bend a plant, to form a shape, this is called a topiary, and if you grow it to a trellis or the like, it's called espalier.....but if you grew a weed plant in any of these methods...the branches that grow up off the lateral branches............they're called lollipops! We don't use the term lollipop with a botanist.....
