Utopian Submarine - 2000W, Indoor, Perpetual

Big Update

For the first time in weeks I am actually caught up again enough to post a good update. I have been working hard on the new space, and I believe the Veg Room is getting close, and certainly the plants are worth sharing. My readership has dropped significantly, which I blame myself for - a lack of new and exciting content. Gonna try to remedy that - starting today.

Gonna take you on a quick tour of the new Veg area, and even a little of the stoned walk back. And we'll end with a teaser of the Barney's Farm ScrOG.

Quick summary:

I am getting old, and all that bending and squeezing in the bathroom Sub was just too tiresome. Also, The lights and hoods I have were designed to be mounted the other way and that was not possible in there. So I have been working on another room in the house to accommodate my grow.

The new space is much larger, with room to walk in. It is a completely different experience, and I gotta say has renewed the growing fun significantly for me. It has become easy to really get in there and work with each plant. Both the plants and I appreciate it.

Although there is more space, I have not really dramatically increased the growing area or the number of plants. Again - my goal here is a good efficient system, comfortable, easy, and consistent. Also. about 18 months from now I intend to open a dispensary and will likely use what I have here as the working prototype. Its damn near exactly what I want (minus an aero cloner - gotta eliminate rockwool completely). This space is for me and 6 patients. I am certainly not gonna max this out here, but double it and max it out and I think you'd have a good medical operation. Limiting one's operation to 99 flowering plants of course.

So, without further ado...

Early Veg:

Right now has 6 Utopia Haze and 6 L.S.D. ending their first week.

I upgraded the veg area significantly. I use a 2x4 Botanicare Tray (which is really only 24x44 BTW), and I found a lid for it. The lid is not listed on most sites, and I had to contact the manufacturer, then convince the hydro store that it even existed. Further, you can order it pre-drilled or solid. They charge a little over $100 to drill it for you. I did it myself. The total cost for the new setup was about $180 with room for about 60 small plants - vs about $80 with room for 22. And instead of 500w of CFLs they are now under a 8x4' T5 using 435W. I got the T5 used from a buddy for about $75 incl bulbs.

BTW - I have decided CFL's grow great plants, but they are more expensive - both upfront and in energy costs. But, if you need a static fixture - one that won't move (like my old setup) - then I think CFLs are better because you'll get more throw.

Moms:

Current Moms are:

Montana
AK-47 Short Pheno
Kali-Mist
Strawberry Diesel
Dog Hair

Utopia Haze and L.S.D. moms will be potted in the very near future.

The moms have remained under the 400MH that was added a while back. They are now living happily in Pro-Mix. I've never worked with it before, but I have seen no hiccups. It seems very intuitive to me. Treat it like soil as far as watering, and treat it like hydro as far as nutes. Easy. I use the water from the veg res to water them. I would use ProMix for everything, but the flushing would be a nightmare. And cleanup and prep between cycles would suck as well. I can handle it with the moms, but no way I'm doing the whole room like that. Half are sitting in a 2x2 tray - got that used from the hydro store for $20. Gonna buy another - its perfect.

Moms_and_LateVeg.jpg

Which reminds me - everyone should get one of these: Kerosene syphon pump. Cost about $3. Basically just the ultimate Turkey Baster. I now use it for everything from taking a little water from a res, to moving water, to draining water, to even watering the moms. Just put a 5G bucket near them. put the straight end in the bucket, and 5 quick pumps per plant and come back in 2-3 days. Takes about 10-15 minutes of care a week as far as watering for 8 plants.

kerosene_siphon.jpg

I'm gonna do a seperate post on just the moms, as they are all doing really well. I could not be happier with the Kali Mist, AK and Montana. They are all real surprises and have really flourished.

Here's a pic of the Montana. If I had a little more even light she would be perfectly symmetrical. She was topped and LST'd:

Late Veg:

Currently has 9 Dog Hair + 1 Experiment all starting their second day in the larger pots. I expect to see them all perk up like the one in the back by the end of the day.

DH_day_2_in_LateVeg.jpg

When I left the room a bird was hanging out in the tree:

bird_outside.jpg

When I snapped a pic of it a nice Cardinal came along and was jealous of the cameras attention so I grabbed a pic of it.

cardinal.jpg

And both birds of course alerted my dog, Ilsa. Named after Ingrid Bergman's character in Casablanca.

Ilsa_smile.jpg

That completes my stoner's tour of my veg day.

Here's a teaser of the next ScrOG. This is from underneath looking up. The above the scrog stuff is pretty dang good as well methinks. But I'm not ready to show it yet. SOOON ;) - now you gotta come back.

I can't believe you are posting at 4:20 am. Do you sleep? That least interesting pic \, you mentioned hash. Is that what you do with all the little popcorn buds or are you talking about the trimmings?

I am finally getting my sleep again - last night was a long one cause I fired up some new timers and lights and wanted to make sure everything worked right - especially the temps and stuff.

Yeah - I take everything below the scrog and all the best trimmings as one group of hash. Depending on what system I'm feeling most confident and efficient with I make a slightly better grade of hash from that stuff. Making hash really is an art in itself however, and I'm still not really awesome at any of the methods.

What a soldier. 420 AM (((DAMN!!!!!))) +rep

Thanks, man! You know the deal when you got a new part to the system. Its like having a newborn baby or something. Gotta be ready for a few long days.

:thankyou::peace::rollit:

hey papa. looks great man! *subscribed*

Meanwhile, given that I've been harping on the site lots lately, I feel I should point out some good progress. The photo gallery has become much easier to use again. There's only 1 extra screen of sillyness after you upload, and I wish they'd get rid of the big pic automatically opening in a separate window. But at least now once I'm in my gallery I stay there. And it remembers preferences. So props to 420 folks.

Hey PaPa.:ganjamon: I too like what has been done to the gallery, once you use it a time or too. Much easier.:peace:

Now let's talk about the changes in the sub. Great idea to get enough room to walk around it the new room. Sure understand about the back and legs given you hell from bending and reaching. If I ever have an indoor grow room, I'll talk to you first.
The Botanicare Tray and the light are just beautiful and the price was right.
Your upgrades are clean and spot less. Just plain old good hard work. Bro.

The Kerosene syphon pump is just perfect. :yummy:

I continuously learn from you PaPa. And you are right about visitors.....no pictures...reduced attendance. Happens in my Journal too. Bunch of porn addicts, bless em all.:;):

Looks good Papa. Nice and clean. Neat and tidy.:thumb:
Those kero pumps are good. You can get battery operated one's too. Saves all that squeezing.:welldone::peace:

Papa great work! I like how you run w/ botanicare products, they're pretty effective nutrients for sure! You're running your scrog very well +rep for sure, and *subscribed* as well ;)

New room looks great and plants look great as usual.

Thanks, bro. I keep hoping I'm gonna see that you've started another grow. You're so creative when it comes to growing space - I am surprised you haven't found the right place for your next. But don't rush it! We don't want a repeat of the last. ;)

Right on. I didn't even think about battery ones - but I have to admit I actually prefer no batteries for this particular piece of gear. The pumping is super easy - does not tire my hand even as much as trimming. I saw a $20 battery powered mister the other day. I have to admit that almost got me. Seems gimmicky at first, but I tried it at the store, and believe me - its $20 well spent if you mist alot. I only mist clones, and I am about to start using Liquid Light and Penetrator so I haven't wasted(spent) the $20 yet.

Thanks!

I like the Botanicare for a variety of reasons.

First, I'm pretty sure I know some of the guys from about 20 years ago. I went to 3 years of college in Petaluma - which is the next town over from Sebastopol - where Botanicare started and is based. I bought my first 150mh from them in 1992 I think.

Second - all their gear is really well designed with attention to small details, and made to work well together if you need to expand. They really add exactly the right number of little channels, and divits and spaces and shapes to make sure water does what its supposed to do. When I tried faking it with rubbermaids - it became obvious to me. There were times I'd say, "Man I wish this part of the bottom was just a .25 inches lower so the water wouldn't pool." And in the Botanicare stuff - ALL those little details are carefully molded into the product in exactly the right way.

Third - I really like the basically Organic nutes. I have found it all but impossible to overfeed the plants. You really have to try to push them to see any negative results from over feeding. And contrary to all the nightmares I was worried about - I have seen no undue clogging or wear on my pumps. I use no filter bags and pump away. No probs yet. I figure when a new pump is $22 and a filter bag is $20 - I'll just replace the pump. (I know I could use a nylon so I guess the real reason is I'm too lazy to wrap something around the pumps in the reservoirs.)

All that having been said - if I had the budget - I would love to try the H&G nutes.

:yahoo::thankyou:

Another fairly sizeable update

OK Folks I'm getting very medicated as I type this so it could be a long one.

I just got done gluing the pvc water pipes in for the veg and flower rooms. I'm giving them a few extra hours to cure and then I'll pressure test tonight or tomorrow morning.

The two main things I wanted to at least get somewhat posted are the moms and the New ScrOG. But I wanna fill in some from last night as well.

So from youngest to oldest:

The Barney's in Early Veg:

As part of my new outlook on life to try and be more easy going - I am going to go with the flow for 420's boycott of cannabis names of other drugs. So from now on - the L.S.D. will from here forward be known as Utopian Sub Dank - USD.

Here's the USD clones for their next scrog:
usd_clones.jpg

Here's the Utopia Haze clones for their next Scrog:
Utopia_Haze_Clones.jpg

Here's the DH - these may actually get to grow straight up since I am not going to be able to veg them as long as I'd like. Without going on a rant about hydro stores and Postal Carriers - I know that 100% of the ones I know of both professions smoke too much cannabis at work sometimes. And between bad hydro stores and bad mail - stuff that should have been here a week early arrived a week late (3 weeks after I ordered it). So in order to keep my schedule these will only get another 3 or 4 days veg I think. So they may be the first plants I will grow straight up under a 600.

dh-perked_a_little.jpg

Also, they were the ones that were droopy yesterday. I think they're doing better today. I never know what to do about the lower leaves when they look like that. Do I cut those or let them be? And is that purple a K def? I'm about 95% sure its not temps.

dh-perked_a_little2.jpg

-------------

Now on to the MILS (Moms I'd Like to ... Smoke)

Moms3.jpg

Tonight's ladies include a fine Strawberry Diesel Flowering Clone. Remember that little experiment from a while back? Well here she is. This plant was only topped once about 5 days into veg to trigger the hormones.

SD_FC2.jpg

Same plant. Not great view down the middle looks empty, but its cause I pulled it back to show the "back half".
SD_FC.jpg

And our next lady is the DH flowering clone. My buddy calls the part at the bottom her bush:
DH_FloweringClone_Mom.jpg

Again this plant was topped only once. So does that make this a trimmed bush?:

DH_FloweringClone_Mom_bush.jpg

----------

And Finally - some of the new ScrOG: I'm not gonna go into any detail right now cause she certainly merits her own post. But suffice it to say I'm doing some things differently than I've ever done, and so far I'm very happy with the results.

My super Scrog Bench:

And now I'm gonna hit POST at 4:20.

:peace::rollit::ganjamon:

Stay tuned for more updates soon...

Morning Update:

All is well. The outside temps are cooperating nicely for these few days. I have not even had to run the AC in the Sub.

The only hiccup is that the CO2 Generator I ordered literally 2.5 weeks ago won't be here til Wed instead of today. The hydro store in my town charges outrageous prices so I can't get it from them, and I made the mistake of trying Better Grow Hydro again. They are not a site sponsor, but since I'm not pushing them I feel I can say their name. I can NOT recommend them. Prices great. Service - literally the worst I have ever seen. They will lie and tell you something has shipped when it has not. They will lie and tell you something is in stock when its not. And their site says 2-3 days processing, I have placed 3 orders with them and not one has left earlier than a week after I ordered it.

Its unfortunate that most hydro stores seem to have been opened by growers who just wanted a cheap way to get their own equipment. I have yet to find a store where the owners are happy running a retail operation, AND do it well.

Today is all about finishing getting the air done for the Veg room, and finishing up the incoming water supplies. Should be a good one.

Also, gonna do some work on the Barney's scrog and I'll try to get before and after pics.

Finally, I believe the SD Scrog is gonna finish nicely. I can't quite tell whether I will need to give her an extra day or two. I'm hoping Sunday to harvest.

:peace::rollit:

Sorry to hear about the ordering ordeal. I hate it when companies have bad customer service. I think thats the retail in me. Why open a bussiness, when your bread and butter are getting stale cause you wont bother to put them away. Its funny we(growers) keep them open, yet sometimes they make it seem like they are the only ones on the earth you can order from. Yeah right, karma comes back 10x's fold. not that I wish bad karma on anyone, but you shouldnt hav eto go through tis much trouble cause of their laziness. Best of luck PG.

Thanks. No real biggie. But you are right. They all act like they know more about every plant in the world, and they all act like they are the only ones to sell the gear.

:peace::rollit:

On a side note: I think my last post on the previous page went unnoticed - too many pics on one page. C'mon folks lets have some comments on those flowering clones and the Super Scrog.

:thankyou::peace:

THAT last pict of the upcoming scrog is sick. YOur going to have solid colas, rollin outa that thing.

:yahoo:

Thanks

I'm really high and having a slow easy day.

This post is a result of me having a week off work and finally feeling like I'm basically caught up on the room. So lets all smoke a joint.

Rolling mine now.

:peace:
:rollit::rollit::rollit:
RoorRipRoorRipRoorRipRoorRipRoorRip

K - I just smoked a little joint of my good stash of the DH. At the risk of stating the obvious - I grow some friggin stoney weed.

This stuff has been curing 3 weeks and tastes as good as a 3 week cure can for me.

And although I was high already - now I'm baked.
