Un-Lucky Queen 12/12 Hempy

My comment about the micro herd and the air stone were in response to a comment about the feasability of organics in hempy buckets. With my hempies I use no air stones in the bucket, I use them in my mixing res. I add beneficial microbes and humic acid to the media. They colonize the media and the roots, and are fed by the plants. One day I would like to brew a tea to feed them as well.

Doc, unless your media has tremendous wicking capability there will be standing water in the bucket at times. Right after watering for instance. It is for this reason that I play it extra safe and add H2O2 every time I feed or water.

There might be standing water for a few minutes....but not much more than that. Perlite wicks really well.

H2O2 and microbes......that's quite a balancing act.

I use the H2O2 2 or 3 times a cycle, not much more than that.

Well, things are definitely getting back on track.
I've culled two plants. Both started down the hermie path again....and that's just not gonna fly amongst virgins, like my girls.
I may have to cull another before we're done.

I think the reverse spray is best for later in flower...I just didn't have the heart to spray them again.
Roots grow well on 12/12 from seed.

Now, seriously. Let's legalize Cannabis. We all know why this should happen. But, at the same time, let's not give up on prohibition altogether! There is a scourge out there that is turning otherwise productive members of the family into breathing blobs of laziness. Good for nothing....consumers who lay around and expect others to feed and take care of them.

Yes, friends. I'm talking about Catnip.

 great cat pic brother grower...sorry to hear about hermies :goodluck:

Thanks for stopping by, Tunes! I've been watching your grow and harvest....you've set the bar very high indeed. It's got to be one of the nicest grows I've ever seen....anywhere.

What medium did you use again?

Anyhow, I've finally got some good news to report, after my girls near death experience. I've set flowering back about 2 weeks, which means I'm going to have to trust my ladies to an automated watering system while I'm away. Never a dull moment, but then this grow was experimental from the start.

Some pics and captions: All pics were taken during the dark cycle with flash. That's why the plants are droopy....they're sleeping.

Here is the whole garden. The Advanced Nutrient plants are in the center, foreground. The Hempy and the soil are next to eachother. As you can see, the only yellow fan leaf in the bunch is in the Advanced group.

Here's a soil, Osmo, SkunkDiesel.

All in all, the Osmocote plants are doing much better than the Advanced.
The Lucky Queen is doing well, I will feature her next time I post....but it is obvious that Lucky Queen is a strain that is well suited to 12/12. The Skunk/Diesel's also do well.....they are very large and have more extensive side branching....I had to do lots of trimming. While that might be good for per-plant yield, it is not a good characteristic for SOG growing, which is what a 12/12 grow is all about.

I really like this style of growing....I will do it again in the future. Assuming abundant seeds at a good price, this method of growing has one big advantage in that you don't spend lots of time finding and discarding males.

I don't know if the 12/12 helped make hermies in the skunk/diesels, but I had as many hermies as males. Out of 17 seeds planted, there were 3 males and 3 hermies. The others are nice ladies.

hey doc congrats on the grow so far. im going to try to start following. i am planning on starting a 12/12 perpetual harvest myself im just still stuck on what strain i want to go with. well good luck ;)

i got the oscomote plus,,,,,,,,,,,your right it has all the micro nutrients also i am really looking forward to trying it

It's made from the same basic salts that Advanced, GH, Botanicare and many others are made from. The only difference is that the ratio is nearly perfect, it includes the minors and micro's in the right balance, and it won't burn your plants.

There is no reason why it won't out perform the muy expensivo nutes marketed to hobby growers....for the vast majority of growers.

Those who are highly skilled can probably mix up potions of various things and beat the Osmocote....then again, those same people can also burn the crap out of their plants...I've done it, and I've seen plenty of other grows here where it's happened.

At the very least, Osmocote is a fantastic base nutrient.....as good as it gets.

Then there's the price and convenience....you can't beat that.

i agree with the price, i paid 16.47. I have done several grows in dwc and seems you are always fight it, i used pbp from botinacare, and at times seems like you cannot keep the ph where it should be, i am going to hempy with the grow i getting ready to start next, gonna do some malawi gold, and serious ak47.........should be good

Doc,

I saw the Osmocote at home depot and it wasnt the plus. it was 14-14-14 for flowers or veggies and i didnt see the micro nutes in it. but, the local hardware had Osmocote Plus, but it didnt say for veggies. Is it going to be safe to smoke if its not labeled for food consumption like veggies?

Plus is totally safe for veggies. Every bit as safe as using a 3 part nutrient series for 12 times the cost. The fact that is has micro's in it isn't a problem....it's a blessing. That stuff is in soil, tap water and in CalMag which so many people have to add to their RO water in order to not get deficiencies.

This is from the Australian Osmocote website:
Questions about Osmocote® PLUS Controlled Release plant food

1. Is Osmocote harmful to pets?

Osmocote simply contains fertiliser salts in a soybean coating and does not represent a danger to pets in the garden. However all containers of garden products should be kept well out of the reach of dogs who are inclined to break open containers and wolf down the contents. To eat a container of Osmocote would be similar to eating a large amount of salt that would, of course, make the dog sick.

2. Can I use Osmocote to fertilise waterlilies?

Yes. Because the fertiliser in Osmocote is released according to how warm it is rather than how wet it is, it is perfect for adding to the pots in which waterlilies are planted. Use Osmocote PLUS Garden Beds.

3. Does Osmocote harm earthworms?

Not at all. Research has shown that earthworm populations can be 400% higher in areas fertilised with Osmocote, compared to areas where traditional agricultural practices are used.

4. What if I use the "wrong" Osmocote by mistake?

The different Osmocote PLUS varieties are all formulated to be perfect for their particular application, but they will not harm other plants. The one exception to this is phosphorus-sensitive Australian native plants which must be fertilised with the low phosphorus Osmocote PLUS Native Gardens.

5. Can I use Osmocote on my vegetable garden?

Yes - Osmocote PLUS Garden Beds is an excellent complete fertiliser for vegetables.

6. How does Osmocote work?

The prills are made up of many thin layers of soy coating, all of which contain tiny fissues. Water can be absorbed into the prills to dissolve the fertiliser inside, but cannot be released until the prills expand sufficiently to allow the fertiliser to escape through the tiny cracks. When it's warm and plants are in active growth, the coating expands and fertiliser is released. When it's cold, less fertiliser is released.

7. Should I put Osmocote on top of the mulch or underneath it?

Put the Osmocote underneath the mulch. Mulch should not be applied thicker than 5-7cm deep.

8. Can I use Osmocote in conjunction with liquid fertiliser?

Yes. While Osmocote steadily provides all of the plants' nutritional needs, you can also give them a quick boost with an occasional foliar fertilising using a liquid fertiliser such as Miracle-Gro® All Purpose Water Soluble Plant Food. For Australian native plants you can use Miracle-Gro Water Soluble Azaleas, Camellias and Rhododendrons Plant Food and for vegetables, Miracle-Gro Water Soluble Tomato Plant food is excellent.

9. How should I store Osmocote?

Keep the lid of the tubs firmly sealed to prevent the fertiliser absorbing moisture from the atmosphere. Store the tubs in a cool, dry place. Do not store the tubs where it is too hot or sunny.

Don't worry a bit about using this stuff in any kind of garden.

yep, I just read the osmocote plus site and this stuff is gonna be awesome, I got the general purpose... 15-9-12 and I think it is gonna rock...........gonna use some hammerhead at the appropiate point if flowering and some sweet and i think thats gonna make it awesome

For those who are following the Time Released fert discussion, here is some good information on the topic. Please note, CRF means "controlled release fertilizer," in this case Osmocote Plus...the stuff I'm using.

WSF means "Water soluble Fertilizer," which is the stuff we all use and mix into water.

Here's the gist of it: Osmocote alone out performed WSF alone every time. The best results were with the maximum dose of Osmocote and a 300ppm nitrogen feeding twice a week with WSF.

Here's a summary of one of the studies.
2004 Study

In 2004, liners of petunias 'Easy Wave Pink' and 'Wave Blue' and verbena 'Wildfire Rose' were planted in May in 12-inch pots and grown outside on a concrete pad. Plants were subjected to 16 fertilizer treatments consisting of varying combinations of topdressed Osmocote Plus 16-9-12, 8-9 month Hi-Start and Peters Excel 15-5-15 Cal-Mag (Table 1). CRF treatments used were none, low rate (1.2 oz./pot), medium rate (1.8 oz./pot) and high rate (3.5 oz./pot) combined with WSF applied never, once per week at 300 ppm N, twice per week at 300 ppm N or once per month at 600 ppm N. Dry weights were determined at the end of the summer.

Plants with no fertilizer (either CRF or water soluble) performed very poorly (Table 1). The limited growth produced by these plants was likely achieved by using the starter nutrient charge in the growing mix. In general, as fertilizer concentration increased, plant growth (indicated as dry weight) also increased. The maximum dry weight measured was for plants grown at the highest concentration of CRF and 300 ppm N twice a week: 253.8 g, 220.8 g and 253.6 g for petunia 'Easy Wave Pink,' petunia 'Wave Blue' and verbena 'Wildfire Rose,' respectively.

In general, plants that received both types of fertilizers were heavier than plants that received only one type.

Plants that were fertilized once per month at 600 ppm N with no CRF were lighter (smaller) than any of the plants that received CRF. Even the lowest CRF rate produced more biomass than the plants in the treatment imitating how an average homeowner might fertilize (600 ppm N once per month).

Bottom line: the studies show that the best results are obtained by using Osmocote Plus as a base nute and supplementing with a water soluble nutrient in LOW doses twice a week or as needed.

There is no reason why we can't all simplify and improve the growing of our beloved plants by incorporating what professional growers use....and CRF is one of their main tools.

There's a ton of really good, quite detailed information at the link below. For those so inclined, you'll find days of informative reading.
