TripleG's Apartment Based Breeding Grounds

Most folks use 100% perlite in their hempys. Over here ---> Hempy Headquarters They are testing some super coarse perlite.
------------------------

I chase healthy roots. The roots I got in rockwool with successful germinations were bright white, fuzzy, and robust. I had more success than failure. Just a few too many failures. I may revisit rockwool when cloning time comes along, seems like it would fit into that niche very nicely.

I have experience with coco, it was available very cheap ($3 brick of Burpees) as were the fabric pots (about $5/100) . I felt comfortable making the purchase. The $25 worth of lava rock I bought a couple months ago should last me a couple of years. The nutrients are inexpensive and very effective (spent less than $25 in about a year). Most money invested here is in lights and air circulation/odor control.

In short, I am a penny pincher
I really do dig how you reuse creative things into your garden. I'm just comfortable with soil I guess. I'm researching true organics, but it's not cheap to grow that way. Lol

Closest I got to that was fox farms soil and semi organic bottled nutrients. Not even close to organic, really.

I don't expect to change anyone's mind. What works for me may fail miserably for the next person and vice versa.

Switching to hempy was a result of a bunch of different factors. Cost and simplicity were major. Bugs, or the fear of bugs was another since I can't trust the grow shops to store the soil properly. Also they can allegedly handle warmer temps better than other grow styles.. my place is a sauna in the summer, no central air with desert like conditions. The tent regularly climbs over 100°.

I'm thread crashing again but feel okay cause you told me I could. I wanted to share a story about an experiment in seed making I am about to finish up here in about 2 weeks.

Way back when I started with a small clone of a strain called "It's It Punch" This is a cross of Acai Berry Gelato X Purple Punch. I have become very fond of the Purple Punch strain over the last 5 months and decided to see about reversing this small clone and make some S1 It's It Punch seeds.

So I up-potted the clone into a 2 gallon pot and that night began applying the Colloidal silver to a select branch which I marked with a white pipe cleaner. I continued applying the colloidal silver at lights on and right before lights out for seven (7) days at which time I flipped the clone into 12/12 flowering. I messed up and forgot to write down exactly how many days I applied the CS before I started to see pollen sacks. In the range of 27 days give or take a couple days.

So here is where I decided to experiment. I had nothing vegging in my small 2' x 2' x 4' tall tent so I relocated her to that tent. I decided to be hands off with this plant and let it self pollinate "itself" I placed a muffin fan on the floor of the tent pointing straight up at the treated branch. I figured if any pollen fell the fan would shoot it upwards and onto the plant. Keep in mind the plant was quite small as was the treated branch, so not a ton of pollen sacks. Well, I let that plant flower for 71 days and harvested all but one bud and the treated branch. Here are the seeds I found in the buds as I trimmed them. I did not break them all apart looking for the seeds. Those I harvested were sticking part way out of their calyxes...…….even the green ones.

Looking at them in the photo here I can see more detail. I believe the darker green seeds with the marbling will grow quite well. Not so sure about some of the lighter green ones though. Seeing these seeds prompted me to not cut off the treated branch which I know has some seeds on it as I can see some peeking out. I will put the plant outside tomorrow and leave it there in the sun for another couple weeks. Hopefull the seeds on her will mature in that time.

The plant itself...…..this strain...…..I think it is going to be a definite keeper. One thing Purple Punch is noted for is the amount of crystals it produces. This plant is an excellent example of this. Here is a picture of some sugar leaves and another of some buds.

I have to call this experiment a success and would consider this method again. I wasn't looking for a ton of seeds just a handful for myself and some to share with some select friends.

Breeding experiment #2. I read about this idea of VanStank's thread probably 6 months ago and finally had a chance to try it out and see if it worked or not. This is a method of pollination that will produce for you a limited quantity of seeds without having pollinated a single bud. The timing has to be right, and in this case it was an accident that the stars aligned just right. Here is how it works.

I had reversed a Chemdawg female with colloidal silver and had success making some pollen sacks. One of the plants I had wanted to pollinate with this Chemdawg pollen was the "It's It Punch" plant mentioned above. Unfortunately she had not started to throw any pistils yet. However, I remembered back to what I had read in the VanStank thread. It said that you can take pollen and hand pollinate the plant's pre-flowers that you'll find on nodes on the plant. I thought what the hell, they are after all pistils and those calyxes are often found to have seeds in the past. So I found a branch that had 8 pre-flowers on it and I dusted each one with pollen. I put a fluorescent green pipe cleaner below the bottom pre-flower, and another one right about the top pre-flower. Today I harvested 7 seeds from those 8 pre-flower calyxes. One of eight did not produce a seeds. What's great is the pollen used would not still be viable when the plant started flowering. So in this case I produced two different strains of seeds off this one plant and 100% sure of the exact strain of all of the seeds produced. Here are the Chemdawg X It's It Punch seeds I plucked today.

The tent is going be a little seedy. Not a big deal. Judging by the amount of Harlequin pollen that flew, it looks like we have some Harlequin x NL F1 seeds brewing alongside the pure Harlequin. I am imagining a few CBD rich phenotypes. Sad I don't have access to testing. This could be a winner of a hybrid.

I started the controlled pollination of Devil's Pitchfork F2 autos in the closet today. Will continue for two more days, then wait a day and then mist everything. So this batch of beans will be Devil's Pitchfork F3 regular Autoflowers. Likely very unstable until I do some further inbreeding or a back cross (or two). I do believe I have more DDA beans on the way.

Final day of pollinating Devils Pitchfork F2 auto. Male is now dead. Tomorrow I mist everything with water. Next round of plants will be sinsemilla. Probably do a little cloning as well to keep with the theme of plant reproduction.

I will be starting 2 test seeds tonight, 2 Quarter Pounder x Stardawg autos. Also will be planting a DDA and another SSDC to go along for the closet ride. Sadly these cannot cloned...

Thinking I should wait one more week before I drop the next round of photoperiod seeds. 100% will be planting 3 Chemdawg x Sour Angel (last of the testers), 4 Zorillo Loco, and 4 of something heavy on the indica, thinking Da Purps is da answer.

I will try and squeeze in some pics a bit later today. Feel overly busy lately.

I've read that it can take up to 48 hours for pollen to be absorbed by the stigma. For that reason I keep the pollinated plant segregated for 2 days and then after 48 hours I mist it thoroughly to neutralize any unused pollen. I'm sure it will work just fine spraying it after 24 hours. Just not sure how many potential seeds you might lose doing it after 24 hours.

I do know that plenty of pistils are already shriveled, in the past that has equaled success every time. Fingers crossed. Actually quite excited for Harlequin x Northern Lights to be something successful.

I am excited too considering that Northern Lights is one of often used strains for breeding. And the Sensi version ranks right at the top with regard to quality genetics. That cross should produce plants that have a very calming effect while additionally help with pain relief.

The last Sensi NL I grew out was a big hit with the neighbors. One said recently that it was his absolute favorite of all the different cultivars I've grown. I really liked it. Super potent eff me up. Not the best for all day smoking, lol.

Things have been so freaking hectic. Haven't really had time to take pics. I have eight 9cm fabric seedling pots full of fresh coco ready to go. Seeds will be soaked tonight. Like I said, very behind schedule.

We are about to experience a big financial hardship. Not sure what all is going to happen. Probably going to have to dip into wife's financial aid early and cancel our Seattle trip to squeeze by.......

Where I was going with that bummer rant is that I'm going to be planting more plants than I originally planned to. I'm going to be needing lots of extra cushion. Several will run pretty much 11/13 from seed. Lots of small plants to fill in all gaps in the flowering tent.

This is the time when making random hybrids for no apparent reason pays off. Looking to have Devil's Pitchfork x Sensi NL x Nirvana NL IBL and Devil's Pitchfork x Sensi NL x GG#4 take on this job. These hybrids now have a very important role to play in keeping us medicated when the wallet gets lighter.

I am still going to run the QP auto x Stardawgs and still going to veg the Chemdawg x Sour Angels and Zorillo Locos as planned. Biggest change is the addition of lots of tiny hybrids and I'm probably going to grow out a few SSDC and DDA alongside the photo/veg gals just to keep everything on track for a big stash..

I've experienced those financial ups and downs. They are merely tests in life to determine your mettle. You guys will get through this rough patch and be all the stronger for it on the other side.

Agreed! Money, trinkets all that shit comes and goes. Family first. Take care of today's issues and it'll all work out over time. Good luck brother

Still slacking but not as bad, at least I did something. Test seeds including Zorillo Locos are soaking. Also soaking 9 of my Devil's Pitchfork x Sensi NL x Nirvana NL IBL for what will essentially be 11/13 from seed.
A total of 17 seeds soaking currently, 17 9cm fabric pots full of coco are ready to be charged with 1/4 strength Mega-Crop. Gonna build me a jungle.

Good luck with the seeds G! It's going to be a full house
For sure. Most of these are regulars, I imagine I will be thinnng the herd quite a bit... so long as I don't get 9 females, lol

9 girls would be a blessing and a curse . I've decided to try and go all organic. I ordered most of the ingredients for a super soil mix. I've been growing the same way for last five years or so and I'm ready for a change. Hopefully it works out. I'll mix it up and let it cook till I'm ready for next round in bloom tent

I sure would love to grow organic outdoors. For now I got cheap ferts and rocks to grow with. Lol

The plant in the back left of the tent is a Black Cherry Punch bred by In House Genetics. First time growing this strain so I'm learning as I go. First thing I'm noticing is she grows LOTS of leaves. I'm plucking off the larger ones that are shading buds below but this is barely making a dent in her foliage. Second, she drinks...….A LOT! And she's right now about 3 inches from reaching the light. AND she is only in a 3 gallon pot. I let her grow to 18" tall and topped her at that point. No other training was done with her. When she is finished stretching (hopefully very soon) I will take her out and thin out the foliage a bit. I've smoked a sample of this strain and it's delicious. What I smoked was grown organically and tasted sort of like a Swisher sweet skinny cigar. I'll be curious to compare what I grow to the organic version. I even saved one organic BCP bud for the taste test comparison.

I also sat here yesterday watching the Indy 500 race and while doing so I collected some kief from my It's It Punch trim. I placed it on a piece of parchment paper, folded the paper over and gave it a good squeeze. I then folded the kief over and squeezed again. I repeated this several times leaving me with this .97 gram chunk. So would this qualify as hash?
