Here in California at Home Depot you can find 14" wide x 48" long laminated shelving for about twenty bucks. That would be much more waterproof than the drywall. Might be an option if you have that at a local hardware store.

No it's nothing without a fastener every foot or so. Then it's just a cover. Not at all weight bearing. It's as strong as it is. Test it as you use it for projects. Water will destroy it. I see you've had other good answers. The poolboy should take care with some wood.
