Trala’s Tent

Just when I thought this thread could not possibly get any better . . . .
And the mods thought one Strayan was hard to control! Now we got three all in the one thread!

Okay DV8 asked me to show him how I do my clones. I know I’ve posted this in here before but I can’t find it.

So funny, I actually feel a bit shy! Lollllll

Oh and this isn’t to say this way is right, and I’m no clone expert like other posters here. This is just the way I do it.

So first I choose my clone, I’m looking for a strong piece of growth. I personally don’t like leggy or top heavy clones. I like them short and trimmed up.

I think of cloning like wound care. You want an aseptic technique which is just fancy for clean. Get your equipment.

Obviously a cleaned pot filled with soil which has been watered
Your cloning agent
If you are a dirtaphobe you need a hole maker, if you’re not you need a finger
A clean knife/scalpel/scissors
And your clone

After I choose my clone, I cut below the point I will dip in my clone agent because I want to leave that area exposed for the shortest amount of time possible.

I then prepare my clone and cut the remaining leaves in half. I like to dip a bit of that cloning gel into the lid, dip my clone then discard remaining gel. And my rationale is cross contamination. So I cut diagonally, dip in the cloning liquid and plant. Bish, bash, bosh.

I push the stalk of the plant firmly into the pot. I think clones take best in a humid environment. But not too humid. I drilled holes on my domes to control humidity. Too humid turns the clone into a mouldy mess. I use blutac to open close air sources as I need them.

I then put her in an area in my yard that gets gentle sun for approx 2 weeks. I feed her 10mL twice daily because the soil works best moist, well I think it does. One thing I learned in here. With clones you continue to feed them the mother plants nutes ratio. They aren’t to be treated like seeds with the weak nute formula.

Anyway I hope this helps.

:)

I have been so efficient today!

I think I’ve had 90 minutes sleep in 35 hours. Guess who will crash and burn before 8pm tho?!

Lol

So I took of Bubbles’s petticoat. She only needed the slightest bit off.

And this is where we are at :)

You from Vic how did you go with all this COVID to shit

Yep totally to shit.

Was like home detention without enjoying the fun of committing the crime.
On the one hand didnt have to go to any markets or see family, on the other I cant function without being outdoors.

What a fucking waste of 18 months.

Why do you cut the leaves in half? I read this study recently that said it was better to not cut them.

I didn't know this so thank you for that. I took my first clone this week so it's obviously good info to know.

:thanks:

Great write-up on your cloning process @Trala. And thanks for the link @HashGirl I have seen reasons for leaf cutting but this is the first study. Great info!
Happy Growing.

It’s literally raining Datsun cogs here!

I have my little Flowergirls outside. Mother Nature is washing their Safers off :) I swear to God I don’t place Floramingo. In fact sometimes I have to take her out of the pool for my Sunday summary when I’m trying to get the 1:1 shot coz she keeps photobombing!

My Matrons of Honour are under the lights. They are in the budrot danger zone.

And this little girl gets a huge Mars Hydro grow tent all to herself, for a bit anyway. As you can see, she got her little toddler legs happening lollinggg.

Turns out I’ve been preparing for social distancing for the last 10 years. Socially isolating was a gift to me. I fucking loved it. I know this is terrible to admit but I'm happiest alone.

I remember at the start of the pandemic my friend in England was telling me how dire the situation was in the UK. I was quite smug with my “our government has really managed transmission but shutting borders, travel and masking..” He was like “Tra all Australian is doing is delaying the inevitable”, he was right.

This will just be our new normal going forward.

I’ve just turned on the morning news. Nothing takes your mind off covid like war :(

Awesome Trala, thanks heaps for that, so good of you to lay the steps out like that.

Could go a Nanna nap myself....

Edit, you should have your own show.
Oh you are welcome.

There are professional cloners in here and I ain’t one. I think Bill is the clone king. There are lots of tutorials that no doubt say the opposite to what I do. This is how I’ve always cloned, and when I say clone I mean cuttings. While I’m new to the whole Canna Clone Club, I have been taking cuttings to grow plants my whole life.

I have always loved greenery. Even in my dodgiest living spaces (and there have been some absolute fucking hovels) I have always had house plants I was either attempting to strike in water or soil.

Until now I always rented, so I kept my plants in pots and they moved with me. Some of them are over 20 years old. And they were all grown with either a sprig, a piece or a cutting. I have since put all of them in my yard. Makes me big smile when I look at them growing without the containment of a pot. The succulent planter I created the other day is just random pieces from around my neighbourhood and yard. While I can afford to buy plants now, I still get a sense of satisfaction when I take a cutting. In fact last time I was at my local nursery I noticed someone had tore an arm off a vine and it was laying on the ground. I asked the guy if I could take it, I have it sitting in water, no growth yet but it ain’t dead so that’s a good sign. Lol

Well I think the main reason I do it is because research and reading studies bores me to death LOLLLLLINGGG

Now you’ve asked I realise I have no idea why I do it. As I said, this is just the way I do it. It is the way I was shown first time I learned about taking cuttings from regular plants by an old plant lover. I’ve just always done it this way ever since.

I am no expert. I was just sharing how I take clones :)

I don’t know if that is a fact either. I just read it in here. It wasn’t from a study or anything. But if I use my Mimosa clones as the Guinea Pigs I would say it’s right. Their growth has been by far superior to my pre low mix nute clones.

You sound like to my misso she buys, steals, takes cuttings gets them home than says here you go your the green thumb
She kills everything

This is curious. Listening to you go through your garden puts me in such a nice headspace Tra! You're the Bob Ross of growers! I'm so relaxed now!
I was today years old the first time I was told I have a relaxing voice LOLLLLINGGG

So funny, in my country I have THE WORST accent. I am fluently low income bogan. I have the stereotypical twang. Queenslanders are known for it.

Thank you :)

As I said I am no expert. I was just sharing how I take clones. Striking difficult plants is so enjoyable to me. Prolly why I waste so much time mollycoddling monstercropped clones. I find something very soothing and satisfying when I take a broken plant that looks 100% fucked, then nurture it and make it burst with happiness and life. I have so many death row plants in my yard who now live a life filled with green foliage and good health.

Or chunder...
I come from the land Down Under

Can you hear, can you hear that thunder?
DB you better run you better take cover!

I will tell you something, even when I buy a plant, I always buy the youngest version. I don’t understand why people buy and established plant for $100, when they can buy a smaller plant for $8 and care for it and grow it thrmselves. The satisfaction is so great. Knowing you did the nurturing and Mother Nature rewards you.

I will get a pic today, if it ever stops raining. I wanted 3 plants in big pots for my front yard. My bf wanted the look I was hoping for now and was determined to buy the fully established versions of the plant, which would immediately make the front area pop. I was just as determined to save the extra money and buy the smallest version and nurture them. I won, and 6 months on so did the plants :)

I have always loved growing plants. Growing MJ is very new to me. I think the reason I go okay at the veg stage is because I’ve been vegging plants all my life. I don’t get twisted over watering. I know how to water plants lol. I have trouble with flowering and I think that’s because I have to except that MJ is an annual, and she dies. Fighting that by removing yellowing leaves just hurts her. My flowering skills are still a work in progress. I’m getting a bit better tho I think.
