Turns out, there are polymers in my soil mix and also humus. I knew and then forgot about the humus. It took a little digging to find the info about the polymers. So that means that my soil mix will hold on to water ...forever.

I'm sure you'll get the hang of the watering thing, and once the roots start to fill the rest of the pot it will get a whole lot easier.

If you can't source some ProMix HP in the spring, you could make a small batch when the weather warms using farside's FauxMix HP® method here.

I can get HP delivered but it's $70 a bale delivered. A bit steep for me.
I can see what they have in Minneapolis. Making it myself is probably what I'll do.
 
My MC and Kelp will be here tomorrow.
Gotta grind up some stuff..blagh. I have a blender and a coffee grinder. Which do I want to ruin?
 
I ground the balls in a coffee grinder once and it worked fine afterwards. Not sure a blender will get to them all as it usually need some liquid in it with no blade at the very bottom.

I pay $40 cad for a 4 cu ft bail of pro mix locally which is about $10 usd lol.

It's $15 US for the stuff I bought locally. Then it's another $10 for perlite.

That's not bad. Sorry it was a bad joke on my part. 30 usd is the conversion for the large bail of Pro Mix Hp that I use.

Our Lowe's closed about six months ago. We have one really overpriced nursery , home depot, menards and Wal-Mart.

I have to drive a bit to Lowes because HomeDepot doesn't carry it. I have two HDs within 10 minutes, no Walmarts, and Menards sounds like a disease.

I ran to the bottle shop this morning to grab a bit of Everclear to mail out to a buddy. Decided I "might as well" grab a half pint-o-bourbon.... since I already made the trip.
