Timmy Haha's First DWC C4 Auto Grow Journal - 2016

Hey Timmy when you say it's spreading do you mean more leaves are turning or just that the already damaged leafs are dying? If the latter don't worry it's a natural process once the damage is done. I would typically remove the damage leaf and look for issues in the new growth.

Greensmurf brings up a good point - once that kind of damage significantly affects a lead it'll typically only get worse until the leaf has fully withered or it's trimmed, from my observations.

I wouldn't be surprised if it spread a little after you dosed with cal/mag before ceasing progression, either (assuming this is the 'root' cause. Pun intended!). There's a little lag time involved here, right? An advantage of DWC is that you're minimizing that lag to a day or three vs. soil which might take a much as a week depending on soil makeup and conditions.

Keep your chin up brother! I'm sure you'll sort this out, and your future grows will benefit from the experience!

Timmy.
Mind if I follow your grow?
Wish I could help with your leave issue but I wont be starting my first grow / DWC / till Feb. Its been a fun reading so far. Hope you get it all worked out.

Crashdog

Hey Crash! Sure you're welcome to follow along! Anything I learn here can help you in your grow later. I'll try to keep as accurate a record of issues as I can, which hopefully will be of future use to other DWC growers.

Hi Green! Unfortunately I mean that it's spreading to more leaves, including newer leaves and further up the stalk. Boo hoo....
:cough:

All the new growth looks healthy in the pictures. I don't see anything else being affected.

CannaBomb62000000

Hi Canna! It's hard to see in the overall pic, but a number of leaves are just starting to get yellow tips and that's how it begins. Within a day it starts spreading down the leaves.

What you say is true, homefry! :allgood:
I hope it clears within that 3 day window you mention, which would be tomorrow (Saturday). As of today, it's spread to the very tips of some other leaves, but the damage to the most-affected leaves seems to be slowing down a little (not progressing as fast as it had been).

I posted a thread to the Pest and Problems forum and got a good answer from PagodaVapor with some step-by-step instructions on what to do next. Basically it's to do a water change and replace with water that's more in a 1-1-1 ratio, basically reducing the Potassium levels. I'm gonna give the plant one more day with the cal-mag dose and if I see more damage tomorrow, I'll do the water change and post the details here.

Thanks so much for the encouragement everyone!

And on a brighter note, my Super Lemon Haze broke its seal today and the first two leaves are saying "Hello! Here I am!" If it grows anything like my C4 did, I'll be ready to move it to its bucket early next week!
:woohoo:

So are you still getting growth or is everything stalled out?

Hey JM! Thanks for asking and checking in! Sorry I haven't done an update in a few days, but there hasn't been much to report. However, to answer your question, yes I'm getting some growth. That seems to have picked up a bit, thankfully!

The leaf problem slowed down a lot, but unfortunately it's now spread to more leaves than I can count. Luckily it's time for a water change tonight, so I'm going to try the formula PagodaVapor suggested to me on my post in the Problems and Pests forum.

I'll also take some pictures of Ruthie while she's out from under the LED light. I'll post them and the details of my water change in a separate post later tonight.

In the meantime, happy growing everyone!

Day 36 Update

Hey folks and folkettes! I haven't had an update in a few days because not much was happening. At least that's what I thought. I've been so focused on the leaf problem I've been having, I neglected to notice that growth seemed to have picked up again. So I'm really psyched about that! However, I noticed more leaf tips turning yellow today, which is discouraging because the problem seemed to be getting better (or at least wasn't spreading for a while).

Since today was one week since I did the last water change, I figured I could go ahead and do another one with a solution mix that was suggested to me by PagodaVapor (thanks Dude!!). Following the idea that my phosphorus levels are too high, he suggested an NPK ratio of 1-1-1 until the problem clears up. It makes perfect sense to me because I have to add so much pH Down to my tap water (it comes out at 9.0 - 9.2). And pH Down is basically phosphoric acid, as he pointed out to me. So we're going to sit Ruthie in this new solution for a week and see how she does.

Here's the mix of solution I whipped up (for 2 gallons):
  • 10 ml Flora Micro
  • 10 ml Flora Bloom
  • 5 ml Root Enhancer

Note that I did not add Flora Gro (lots of phosphorus), nor did I add the Floraliscious or Cal-Mag.

Water readings:
  • pH: 6.1
  • PPM: 462
  • Water temp: 68.8F

As for growth, I think she was only about 6" in height the other day (I wish I could remember what day that was - either 1/19 or 1/20) and today she's almost 9". I checked the height of the tallest leaf to the light and it was just about 18", so I had to raise the light a few inches. Luckily the light can be as close as 18" once she goes into full bloom, otherwise I'm going to run out of height space.

Speaking of, I did another lst on the tallest stem. In the pictures below, you might notice my new method for anchoring the pipe cleaners for the lst. I was previously using electrical tape, but it kept pulling away from the plastic lid. So I bought some of those 3M removable hooks (you know, the kind that you can stick to a wall and it doesn't leave a mark...when you want to remove it you pull the putty like tab on the bottom to stretch and release it?) and attached them to the lid where I needed to anchor the pipe cleaner.

So here's before the lst:

Day_36_pics_003.JPG

Day_36_pics_004.JPG

And after the lst (only the tallest stem):

Day_36_pics_007.JPG

Day_36_pics_008.JPG

Finally, regarding my Super Lemon Haze seedling I started last week. It seemed to be stunted for the last few days - the first two leaves (I forget their name) curled under and turned purple at the tips and the first two real leaves are barely growing and are shriveled-like. I noticed that the husk was still stuck to the stem and it wouldn't come off easily, even with some tweezers. So I thought maybe it was "strangling" the stem somehow and preventing growth. I remembered reading in a thread somewhere that you can soak the seedling for a minute or so and that will help dissolve some kind of membrane that's holding the husk to the seedling. The good news is, it worked and I eventually got the husk off! The bad news is, I bent the seedling to almost a 90 degree angle while I was putting it back in the seed tray. Oh no!!!

I have it delicately propped up with some toothpicks and I'm hoping it will be like I supercropped it already. I'd be so psyched if it came back with a vengeance and produced a bumper crop! Haha...I can only dream. Let's just see if she survives the night first.....

On that note, ciao peeps! Happy growing and thanks for reading!

Lookin pretty good there timmy....hope your water change helps out.

Hey Timmy. Great start on your first grow!

keep up the good work. As far as your leave issue goes, I have more experience in soil than DWC but I would be wiling to bet that the way those leaves are curling under and the slightly burnt tips that you actually have a slight nitrogen toxicity. Notice how the leaves are dark green? Thats also a sign pointing to nitrogen toxicity. I could be wrong but I think when nitrogen is too high it can lock out other nutes which would make it appear as though you has a phosphorus issue. It doesn't look bad though I wouldn't do anything drastic.. It seems you went a little easy on the nutes with the res change so it should work itself out. Just my .02.

I wouldn't worry too much about it!

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! I appreciate you reading my journal and offering your feedback and questions!

The water change on Tuesday seems to be helping! The leaf tips that were already turning yellow are still yellow of course, but I don't think it's spread to any more leaves (though it's hard to tell because so many tips were changing). In any case, Ruth is looking good tonight and has definitely entered her flowering stage! I didn't take any pictures tonight because I'm not feeling well and didn't feel like going through the hassle of taking her out of the tent. I'll take some pictures tomorrow if I'm feeling better and will post them here.

Greensmurf420 - to answer your question about water....I used spring water in this last res change. My tap water comes out at 9.0 pH and I have to add a lot of pH Down to get it within range. I bought some distilled water at the grocery store to use, but when I tested the pH of that, it was 8.6! Spring water tested at 7.4, so I used that and once I added in the nutes, the pH ended up at 6.1 without me having to use any pH Down. I think I'll be using spring water going forward, since I need to be careful of my phosphorous levels as that appears to be what my problem was.

Anyway, quick update on readings:

  • pH: 5.8
  • PPM: 442
  • H2O temp: 68.3F
  • RH: 47%
  • Air temp: 78.6F

That's my update for tonight, folks! Thanks again for reading and happy growing!

Day 43 Update - Happy Week 7 Ruth!

Today is the beginning of Week 7 for Ruth and, for the most part, I'm happy with how she's doing. Though we're dealing with a continuing leaf problem, I'm happy to say we're entering into full bloom stage now. Check these out:

Day_43_pics_025.JPG

Day_43_pics_017.JPG

Here's how she looks overall:

Day_43_pics_027.JPG

Looks good so far, right?

Today also happens to be a water change day. Good thing too because this girl is drinking LOTS! I have to add about a 1/2 gallon of water to the reservoir every evening. And since I have to add lots of pH down to my tap water to get it down to 5.8, I'm concerned about the phosphorous levels getting too high again. So I'm glad today was a water change day and for the chance to re-balance the nutes.

You may recall from last week's entry that I put Ruth on a reduced nutrients regimen for a week to help arrest the spread of the leaf tip problem I was having. The reduced nutes seemed to have stopped the problem of the leaf tips yellowing and the leaf then turning brown, but it's presented a different problem. Check out these leaves:

I think these are signs of a cal/mag problem? Can someone confirm that for me?

If so, I decided to add some cal/mag to this week's solution. I didn't get any advice on how to change my nutrients once I did the one-week fix, so I had to improvise. Here's what I mixed in 2 gallons of water:

  • 7.5ml Micro
  • 2.5ml Gro
  • 10ml Bloom
  • 10ml Cal/Mag
  • 1ml Floraliscious

I'll continue to monitor her for continuing signs of leaf damage. I'm hoping these nutes aren't too high. If so, I have some water on standby ready to mix a weaker batch, if needed.

Here are the latest readings:
  • pH: 6.1
  • H2O Temp: 69.1F
  • PPM: 692
  • Air temp: 78.1F
  • RH: 47%

If anyone has feedback on what my leaf problems are, I'd love to hear it. Do you think it's a continuation of the earlier problem, or is this something new as a result of the reduced nutes this past week?

On a sadder note, I had to nix my Super Lemon Haze seed last week. For whatever reason, the seedling just didn't progress beyond sprouting and producing the first two leaves. The second set of leaves started to appear and then just shriveled and didn't grow. Oh well, that was a waste of a $20 seed....

On the brighter side, I got my first delivery from Seedsman over the weekend! I have 3 Auto White Widows, 3 photo White Widows, 2 Blueberry, 3 Super Silver Haze, and 1 Auto Sour Diesel. As I really only have room to grow one plant at a time, I'm going to have a hard time deciding what to grow next. I think I'll have to wait and see how much I can harvest from this C4 first, then decide how much time I have to grow another batch before I smoke through this one. So here's to hoping for a big yield this time around and maybe I'll have time to do a photo and some serious topping and lst.

OK folks! That's all for tonight! Looking forward to your feedback and questions, if you have any! Thanks for reading....happy toking!

Looking great! 6 weeks goes by fast right! Before your u know it you'll be harvesting a bunch of buds! I would guess that's a mag deficiency, but that's just a guess not for sure

So I had heard before that advanced nutrients auto balances your ph, but I hadn't tested it until tonight, I'd ph balance before adding nutes. Usually, my well water comes out around 7.8. Tonight I mixed in all my nutes first, then dipped the wand in for a reading and it came out right on 7. I was pretty impressed. That might cut down on some of your problems in the future. At the very least, you have that knowledge now. (If you're already running AN my apologies for being redundant).

And I don't know jack, but I think that might just be nute burn. It looks like it starts from the tips and expands inwards. Hopefully someone can clarify for us.

That's a shame about your haze. We're you growing it under your more powerful lamp? The light might've been to intense?

Blueberry or sour deez get my vote.

Big yields indeed! Cheers.

Man isn't that the truth. It seems like yesterday I came home and found them laying on their sides - a toothpick was thicker and stronger. Time flies. Something tells me the last half seems to take much longer than the first half tho lol.
