TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

The way your girls are growing, I think you could top them the night before flipping and they'd be right, lol....

LOL! They've slowed down a bit from the defol, but seem to be bouncing back nicely now. Will update just now.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Hey blaze! You're always in my journal so I finally got the time to peak in! Looks amazing! May I pick your brain a little? As you know from following my journal I'm using fox farm soil with perlite added.. My new clones are going in a coco/perlite mix. How often do you water your 5 gal smarties with the coco? I can tell you're doing it right so your advice will be noted and applied to my next generation I'll be running both coco and soil on the next run to see which I like best. I'm looking for bigger healthier plants mostly. Can't wait to see yours flower!

Thanks for the kind words bud.

You can definitely water/feed more frequently with coco + smart pots. At this point in the grow, I will feed them about 1.5L every day for about 3 days straight. I usually get a little too much runoff on the third day, so then I will wait 36 hrs and give them 1.5L straight pH'd water, sometimes with a little calmag added. Then wait another 36 hrs and then resume normal daily feeding schedule. I don't stick to a rigid feeding/watering plan. I like to it daily until I see that a fair amount of it is going straight through. Then I will wait 36... max 48 hrs before giving plain water.

Will you be using synthetic nutes with the coco/perlite? If so, you need to do just straight watering until runoff at least once a week. Otherwise you get salts that build up in your medium, which in turn will cause pH problems.

Hope that helps. Feel free to ask more questions if you have any bud.

EDIT: I don't like to let my medium dry out completely ever. Same issue with the salts.

Times are indeed tough, I hear ya bro...have you thought about hydro? I know a lot of it is quite expensive but DWC would be pretty easy to set-up DIY...airstones to keep the water oxygenated would be the only technical aspect to it & you can even DIY those.

I started another grow...went with 3 super lemon haze & 3 pure kush...about 9 days from sprout now.
:high-five:

I haven't really given any consideration to hydro. I'm a creature of habit, and tend to stick to what I know. I suppose with a bigger grow, hydro would be easier and less work in the long run. So it might be something I can consider in the future. Right now though, I am very happy with coco/perlite.

Will jump on to your new journal now bud! Keen to see how you pull off the SLH.

You are using hydroponics..just without the res pumps and timers...

Yeah, I keep forgetting that actually. I must remember that if I ever advertise my wares. In SA, hydroponics is somehow synonymous with A+ grade smoke. Ironic, considering decent organic grown bud is usually where it's at when it comes to the whole package.

UPDATE

5 weeks old today!

I defoliated on monday night. As a result, the growth has slowed and the plants are looking a little scraggly. They have started bouncing back nicely though, and you will see a big difference with my next update in 2 days time.

Super Skunk. The only plant of the six where defol is a necessity and not a choice. Very bushy, and plenty of hidden tops directly beneath the first layer of the canopy.

Superb OG. See how nice and open she is now. A nice, easy plant to defol.

It's the same in Australia.. Actually all most people know is bush or hydro.. Bush means grown outdoors and hydro means indoors.. Here most people wouldn't know how it's grown, just where...

Quick question regarding LED lights:

Is it a necessity that you specifically buy an LED grow light, or can you improvise and buy an LED light for a different application and use that instead?

For instance, I've come across a guy selling LED lights for off-road vehicles. It is a bar configuration, instead of spots. Using cree bulbs, and is 126w. Much cheaper than getting a proper grow light. If it is the right kelvin, say 3000K, will this work??? Remember, it is just going to be used to help fill in the area that doesn't get as much HPS light. The HPS will still be the main light source, and I will rotate plants under the lights, so that they all get to spend some time under the sweet spot.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

I have found a second hand light for quite cheap. Roughly $150. This is one of those UFO jobbies. Here are the specs. Just remember, I'm not looking for the best of the best. Just want to increase my footprint a bit.

LED Type: 43x TW Epileds
LUX: 1100 Lux/0.5m/8sqm, 820 Lux/1m/10sqm, 630 Lux/1.5m/20sqm
LED Power: 135W (45x 3W)
LED Beam Angle: 120 Degree
LED Colors: Red, Blue, Orange, White (Red: 620nm-630nm 30pcs, Blue: 460nm-470nm 6pcs, Orange: 600nm-610nm 5pcs, White: 6000-6500K 4pcs)
LED Lifespan: 50,000 Hours
3x Cooling Fans

What do you guys think? Worth $150?

LED grow lights are very expensive in SA. The cheapest Nova LED light my hydro store stocks is about $700. Just to put things into perspective for you.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

The above light is new, not used. So that $150 is very cheap here. I'm leaning towards this as a solution unless you guys convince me otherwise.

Thanks

EDIT: PLEASE IGNORE ABOVE MESSAGES. A FRIEND IS LENDING ME THE SAME UNIT AS LISTED ABOVE, SO THAT I CAN TRY IT OUT. IT'S GOOD TO HAVE FRIENDS LIKE THAT!!

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Agreed. That solves that problem then.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Hey blaze I got no idea about LED's...but Im looking at those specs you posted & noticed the lux being 1,100 at 0.5m etc. If that's the case then I would find out whether that's enough for LEDs because I know 1,100lux in CFLs & HPS is nothing when a plant needs 15,000lux minimum. The lux rates may be different in LEDs thats why im not sure but hopefully someone can elaborate, I know for example you can't really measure LUX from an LED with a normal light meter. I don't want you wasting $150 for nothing if you can pick up a few quality CFLs instead to cover those darker patches.

:Namaste:

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

I see you missed my ninja edit Sol. I'm getting a loan unit from a friend, so will cost me nothing.

I did see the ninja edit, just advising to make sure that LED is better than a CFL in terms of output otherwise its a waste if you do eventually buy it. As they say...a friend with weed is a friend indeed but a friend with LED is better lol!!

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

In the next few months, I will be purchasing 2 x 1000w lights, and then this current tent and 600 will be used just for veg. So even if this light just adds a little extra light coverage, I will be a happy man.

Nice one blaze, its great you're able to upgrade to such a level...separate veg room with a 600w & 2x 1000w flower room is awesome bro! gonna be good watching all this fit together, exciting times ahead. Do you know the room or tent sizes yet?

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Thanks bud. The new tent will be either a 240 x 120 x 205 cm or a 300 x 300 x 205 cm. Just need to double check the size of the room first. Would prefer the bigger one, but the 240 will work just fine for about 10 flowering plants at a time.

Hi, nice grow :thumb:

I don't think it's worth the money, you can get a brand new light with higher wattage for less than $150.

re: TheBlaze's Multi-Strain Grow In Coco & 600W HPS

Thanks PGR

Unfortunately here in South Africa, LED tech is a little scarce and very expensive. There is nothing for under $150 here. I've looked.

Besides, I'm getting an LED light on loan. So paying $0 for it.
