This! ↑ Not a lot of basements in Los Angeles, and boy could I use the extra space.

Ok that makes sense. They don't build a house here without a basement or should I say you would have to have the home custom built without a basement.

I lived in apartments all my life until we bought this house, and I always wanted a basement. Oh well. Nowhere to run to baby, nowhere to hide.

I was wondering if earthquakes had something to do with it but didn’t want to assume. Makes sense with the number of fault lines running throughout Cali.

Apparently the safest building to be in during an earthquake is a single story wood-frame and stucco house that's bolted to the foundation, which is what I'm in. Of course, that assumes the earthquake is nice enough to wait until I'm home.

Ya I have seen some of your building codes on the home reno shows. Almost everything is re reinforced with some kind of metal strapping holding it down.

Two story ones are for sure. When I finished my garage I had to do some strapping and extra foundation bolting work to compensate for the 16' opening across the front!
