The Proper Way To Water A Seedling In A Large Final Container

The time to switch from the spray bottle to the watering can is as soon as the plant stops swimming around in the soil when you water, or when the second set of leaves start developing. If you don't give enough water to get down to the bottom, even just a little bit, the roots wont go down there either. Your plants have been stunted because you are artificially keeping all the roots at the surface of the soil. Everything doesn't look good... by 3 weeks I have 5 nodes sticking up and my plants are nearly 2' tall... your plants have adapted to your watering method.

You're the hero we need but don't deserve!! :Namaste:

@Emilya can I also ask: I'm going to up-pot soon, and wondering about the best way to approach watering the up-potted plant for the first time. In trying to extrapolate from your advice, I was thinking to maybe just water the edges so it forces the roots out of their original root ball. Or should I simply saturate the whole thing? Thank you again for your fantastic advice and guidance. :Namaste::green_heart:

It is important to always saturate the new uppotted plant so as to merge the two soil regions, and with proper watering techniques migrate some of the new microsoil into the old rootball in that first and subsequent waterings, by alternating watering from the edge and watering the region above the old rootball. You will have to refer to my original work on how to properly water a potted plant to see how that soil migration within the container works.

Thank you! I remember the original post and will revise.

Any thoughts on rain water? Letting the plant sit out during mild to moderate rain. I only worry because by pot is so big compared to the size of the plant.

Would it be wise to save rain water for future waterings?

I think a lot of people store rain water to water their plants with!

As for letting plants get rained on I don't think that's as popular because of how little control one has.

Yes, if you are lucky enough to be able to store and use your rainwater, by all means take advantage of it. My new house has a cistern that is fed by the guttering... I will have a good supply of fresh clean rain water for all of my grows, inside and out.

Thanks @Emilya everything’s looking a lot greener after that first full nute watering and some good inner node growth coming out

Looking great Jay!! Seeing happy plants makes me happy. My plants have also been growing crazy fast since implementing all these tips.

Before I was frequently watering everyday with small amounts. At this point I have been saturating every 3-4 days and lightly watering the top every other day. It seems they are just about matched up at this point judging by the weight of the pot. Just hoping my recharge arrives before I need to water again.

Mine are due for watering by tomorrow morning. But I'm hoping they don't fall over asking for water until the evening..How bad is that by the way, when they fall over from underwatering so long as you water immediately? Went out to check on them the other day and they werr fallen over and looked like they were dead. Gave them a good watering over an hour or so and they came back looking super healthy after about an hour. Just didn't know if I shocked the plant on accident by letting it go too far.

Its not exactly good for them to let them get that dry, but while you are in veg you can get by with it... its best to water them before they actually wilt though... try to notice the droop of the lower leaves as you get to about 12 hours away from this point. If you allow them to go this far while in bloom, they will surely hermi on you.

While you wait for the recharge, just give them a little top watering if they are that dry... just enough to get to tomorrow.

Thanks Emilya. Will try to pay more attention to the early signs. Was not aware that the lower leaves droop first when they want water.

Will definitely give them a top watering to hold them over. Didn't even think of that.
You should read my first watering guide and learn about not only the droop, but the perfume pump too! :)

Greetings Emilya,
So today is day 22 of my second indoor auto grow and I am trying to follow your watering guide but having some difficulty. It's a 4x4 tent, 500w led (dimmed to 200w to start 300w now @ 18-20in.) , ffof soil w/20% pearlite and some dolomite lime, botanicare pure blend pro liquid nutes. I also switched to fabric pots this run. Watering went according to schedule from seedling through until this week. I'm wondering if I have way too much drainage maybe because the lift test says the soil is dry in 2 days now and the plants are confirming the light weight of the pots by exhibiting thier I'm thirsty droop. Aside from the wet dry time frame being off the plants look amazing. They're all past node 5 already and growing like weeds. I disregarded the 'you don't need to feed them in this soil for a month' advice from the fella at the nursery and am following the feeding schedule on the nute bottles. Any advice on how i get back on track?
