The Perpetual Healing Garden - SweetSue's Joyful Return

Moving our discussion here. Started it in the study hall because it was about increasing CO, but now it's more about our grows.

For me shape is more of consideration than size. I don't want it too deep. Most SOGs I've seen use 1 gal pots packed tight. Large container with multiple plants wouldn't need to be much deeper than that. If you let plants get too tall it's no longer a SOG, it's a tree farm! :)

More I thought about Canna and Nis's raised beds I recalled that their discussion started with something more like a drain table. I think I would pack my 2 gal smart pots tightly in large rectangular trays. (i've got over 30 of them, gotta use them for something.) Tight pack would be similar to large pot needed for kit soil. And roots would probably grow from one pot to another just as if it were one big pot. Shape fits my lighting better and fills space better than big pot. Another option I considered is using bins that I'm using to store and cook my soil. It's still couple months away so lot's of time to think about it, but I'm leaning toward tray and 2 gal softies.

But if I used a 15 gal pot I think I could fit 7, 1 in center and 6 around it. Nice hexagon pattern. I love hexagons. :circle-of-love: Hey! That's a cool pattern too. And if the plants could move around like that they'd all get good light. The way I'm talking now you'd think I was the one who had the second brownie! :) You're a bad influence on me, Sue. Thank you again for that!
:Namaste:

Thank you KR, for moving the conversation here. I like the idea of the hexagonal pattern in the 15 gallon. You could start with them in one gallons, fill the bottom of the pot up to the necessary level, and then drop the soft pots right into the pot, dusted on the outside with Roots! This is the way HealingKronic does his transplanting and he gets higher yields from the ones he keeps in the one gallons.

This lets me use the 15 gallon pot for more shared root space, and as you pointed out, the roots will invade each other's pots.

I'm liking this idea a lot. It lets me start a bunch and then figure out which ones to include. As long as I can keep them healthy in the one gallon pots I can keep them in veg until there's room in the rotation. I can use this method with 7 gallon pots too, just less plants per pot. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Hard decisions

I think I'm going to sacrifice this one to an early cull. The mites have exploded.

They're hiding in those curled leaves. Even if I start an aggressive program of eradication I'd never get them all. So I'm taking her down. I'll spend the next week scrubbing this space down again before moving anything else into here, but I have a couple plants ready to flower by the time the soil's done next week.

I'll turn her into a specialized oil. Make her into some undecarbed oil and feed it to the daughter for the exotic cannabinoid load.

Sometimes you just need to know when to say "Enough already."

Spinosyd. I'm like a Jehovah's Witness for the stuff. Have you tried it my child? It will wipe out all of those mites in 24-36 hours. They will be paralysed in less. It's germ warfare at its finest. It's a specially bred soil bacteria that is absorbed by plant and then multiply and attack insects nervous systems of anything that either tried to eat or suck sap from your plants. Mites is the latter.

What is your local major hardware shop? Home Depot? I can find a cheap good brand for you. May I please have a brownie? You can txt it to me.

Well, that's a bummer. But better to be safe than sorry with later grows. Ladybugs and garlic with onion might work on them. Or lemon juice? Good luck Sue, keep the smile on it suits you! :Namaste:

I've noticed spider mites pull the leaves together and make cones out of them. Ugly nests of them inside usually. If you have prime order 'American lady bugs'... I mentioned somewhere else they eat about 30x their weight in a day. Prepare a solution of sugar water in a mist bottle and soak the undersides of the leaves right at lights off. Release your lady bugs onto the sugary prepared leaves in darkness... and prepare for carnage. If you don't want them crawling out place screen material over your intake and output within the tent... these aren't your normal small ladybugs. They're 2 times bigger than any I've seen flying around in new england... these things are crazy. I've watched them eat a line of aphid eggs... then the aphid moments after it had lay them on a leaf. Mites are so small 100 or so of those ladybugs could end a single plant infestation in a day. Then stick around to clean up the topsoil. They really fascinate me everytime...

I'm still fighting my mites with neem oil and it's kept them at very low numbers that I can live with thru end of this grow. But I'm starting to notice the cumulative damage of repeat small attacks on leaves. It's not bad now but I've got 5 weeks to go. I'm considering spinosad, but would rather go with ladybugs. I hadn't considered that they woud eat mites also, but blog from Royal Queen Seeds confirms it.
Ladybug mite control

Down side is that I won't be able to use neem oil or spinosad, or will be limited in using them, because in spite of what blog says neem will kill ladybugs if they get sprayed or make direct contact with it. So I'll go to 2-3 sprays/week until bugs arrive.

Fuzzy, thanks for tip about sugar water before releasing ladybugs!

OK, you may have spared her Spookies. :hugs: I read your post, turned around and pulled the bottle out of the cupboard. At the very least, I can get her through one more drench, eh? Wait three days and repeat the spinosad shower. Do that for three straight applications, and I should have killed everything off.

I'll let her drip there while I apply the Energy drench I'm overdue on. Writers! ...... I'm still finding balance.

Yeah, let's be honest, when was the last time you saw me kill a plant when it wasn't absolutely necessary? :laughtwo: I have a lot of bark, but I'm toothless, and the plants know it. Lol!

The brownie's on me. Carnival makes some hard-to-resist tastiness in this brownie mix. :cheesygrinsmiley:

Wow! She has excellent taste. I'd encourage a vaporizer, but in reality I'd reach for that beautiful pipe, that'd have to sit so nicely balanced in the curl of the hand.

Sweet! :high-five:

Well, I actually would like another pipe but this one is pretty nice too! I am pretty curious about that chocolate though...

Welcome Archiweedies. :welcome: A newcomer to our community as well, I see. Are you finding your way around easily? Is there anything in particular we could direct you to? Most come here with some clear goal in mind. We're often surprised at how quickly those things can change, but most come in the door to learn how to grow, or how to medicate.

Do you fall into either of those categories, or are you bringing with you some unsuspected talent you'd love to share? :battingeyelashes:  You've joined quite a creative and expressive community of the most caring souls you're ever to met on the Internet. Welcome to your new :420: family.

Make yourself at home and please, don't hesitate to jump in and join the conversation. What better way to get to know you, unless you start a grow journal. Hint, hint. :laughtwo:

Mmmmmm..... Cannachocolate. Yummy. You do know that women consider chocolate brain food? :laughtwo:  I start every day with a chocolate brownie. Some days, I stand there savoring the chocolate sweetness and wonder if I might not be the luckiest woman on the planet. :slide: :green_heart:

Peace all. Hope everyone is well. I jz got from Anaheim on some work related travels. Came back to this. She wasn't watered for a few days. And the soil. Seems to be completely. Think she's ready?

.Live , love , grow.

I think she's in your harvest window and you could probably push it at least another week. Unless you have a need for the harvest right now, that is, in which case I'd plan on a weekend harvest.

She's lovely Hushsoundz. Those colors on the leaves are one of my favorite moments in growing. Lots and lots of oil growing there too. :high-five:

You would get along great with my mother lol.. I've taken a few day's to go over some of your work. And during that time I not only found a good cultivater, but a humble spirit. If you don't mind I'm going to pull up a seat and join your journey. It's defiantly one I want to be on! :high-five:

Reading up on the Monterey spinosad product, it claims the neurotoxin will kill them within two days. Sunday she gets another shower. I'll resist the urge to strip her of those curled leaves. They are, indeed, filled with mites, running about a bit frantically right now, truth be told.

The impulse to kill her felt wrong. The impulse to use the spinosad was instinctive, and felt very right. She has some lovely structure going on beyond the curled leaves filled with mites.

I'm coaxing her Energy drench into her. She'll go back in the tent until our next bathing adventure.

Thanks for the warm welcome, Sue. I come to the forum as a student, I am still in the research phase prior to growing. I don't feel the need to know everything before trying my hand at growing, but I want to learn as much as I can from folks like yourself. I do have an unsuspected talent, I am a woodworker! I hope to utilize this skill in the construction of my grow space. I hope for it to be interesting and will document it when I get there .

Oooo... a carpenter. I've a soft spot, but then I was blissfully coupled up with one for 34 glorious years. We did many wonderful things with wood over those years. Take lots of pictures when you build, so we can share in the fun.

As a student you certainly came to the right place, although I don't know that I'd put myself up there with the rest of these guys. :laUgh2: They understand the science, I follow impulse. We get to the same place, but I sometimes sense I make them a little nervous, running pell-mel through life. My way takes a certain fearlessness and joyful expectation that most find intimidating. :laughtwo:

I look forward to watching you play with your first official grow.
