The Joy Of Growing - SweetSue Goes Perpetual

Daily Update: Perpetual Tent - Week 19, Day 6

Maintenance notes:
- All kit plants with 5 nodes or more got Brix foliars.
- Carnival got her lower regions defoliated.
- Bubblegum sprout watered.
- Unknown got a Transplants/Tea drench and had a few hours of LST.
- ............I do believe that's it.

Shall we take a look at what was left?

Strawberry Blue (Day 55) and Auto Jack Herer (Day 66). I just now realized that I'm also tracking this one for the CAT drench. AJH had her first CAT on Wednesday, so tomorrow I'll need to remember to get her in the shots. She's looking good from here, eh? :cheesygrinsmiley:

From the front left and moving counter-clockwise, Auto Jock Hx Auto Amnesia (Day 58), Buddha at shoe OG (Day 56) and the New Year's Bag Seed (Day 55)

I had to smile. It's looking a bit like Ziggy's tent, isn't it? :laughtwo:

The vegging LOS Girls. Sorenna, do you see who decided she wants to be tallest? I was shocked when I looked under there today. Kalashnikova Auto, down there in the right-hand corner, is now 34 Days old and looks like she's decided to play catch up. :laughtwo:

One last glance back. Ahhh..... SweetSue is very happy.

image32907.jpg

I completely forgot to get pictures of the Tiny Closet. I was anticipating getting them after dinner and before lights out and then I ran into the friend who introduced me to Dale and I brought her home for a visit. Time got away from me, but it was time well spent. She suffers from COPD and hasn't been able to smoke cannabis in over seven years, a fact completely unknown to me. I sent her home with a sizable slice of my Baked Brownies and a hope that I'll be able to keep her in some kind of edibles for relief.

I think that may be one of the sweetest joys we experience in our group, and one we all strive for, from what I read as I wander. It's really our whole purpose for being here, to use cannabis to relieve suffering. That made my whole week worth while.

I hope your day was blessed with opportunities for you to reach out and soften the blows life sometimes brings to those around us. There is no finer way to spend our time here than in actively spreading the actions of loving.

Make me proud people. Share like there's no tomorrow. Spread that joy everywhere. :hugs:

:Namaste:

Things are looking fine as frog hair in your tent, SweetSue. Kala and Blue are neck n neck as my favorites. The carnival is lovely and lush and beautiful, but Im still a big fan of those two. :) I feel like your Blue and mine are sisters. hehe

I can certainly see the resemblance. If this is indeed Skunk, SweetSue couldn't smile any bigger. Whatever it is, I'm rockin' it in miniature. :laughtwo:

Clone wars...

When are you gonna try your hand at cloning? Those Afghanis look like they have a few lower branches they don't need that would make fine candidates for good clones. If you have any questions, feel free to ask as I've been doing more and more of it lately. We just lost some killer Hell's Fire phenos at work because nobody took the time to clone them properly. For reference, they tested in at 33% and 34% THC but I can't buy any to show you because my boss is keeping the 3-4oz from each plant to enter into our local cannabis cup. Anyway, we have more HF seeds, but I'm scared we won't get the same phenos, which smelled and looked delish.

Yada, yada, I'll be posting some updates in the next few days, so stay tuned. I'll try to stop back everyday or so to bug you about cloning - don't want you losing killer genetics because you didn't make copies. :)

That's all for now. Keep up the great work, Sue. Always a pleasure to see what's going on in your world. :Namaste:

Sometime this week. Afghani #2 is ready any time, #3 needs a day or two more. You'll be around. Been trying for bed now for three hours. You guys are so distracting and engaging it's hard to stop. :laughtwo:

Good night/morning/day.

PeeJay, you're suggesting that I let the top layer of the soil dry out. My understanding is that my mulch keeps that layer from drying out precisely because it's so biologically active. What's the difference between your dry layer of crust and my protected layer that also introduces local microbial life?

You can't think of mircorganisms as pets in the dirt that scamper around and have fun. They have very short life cycles. When that good crust goes from wet to dry there is a symphonic drama that goes down resulting in a better environment down below.

What you want to do is feed that top crust now and then with easily digested whole foods, kelp meal, alphalfa meal, a pinch of rock dust, some castings, a little fresh dirt from the bin and really scratch it in. Dig in with your fingernails and get dirt under'em. By providing that food you foster an environment where there is a mircobial fiesta each time you water that builds up into a wild frenzy as things start to dry and ends badly for the most of the revelers as things get too dry.

In general, mulch is never placed over a plant's main rootzone. I borrowed this picture from Cola Monster because I knew I could find a great vivid picture of proper mulching practice. Thanks CM!

Doing it right in a pot is tough... Now if you are dealing with extreme heat or cold there may be cause to push mulch right up to the stem but that is not the case in a grow tent. You are better off letting that mat experience wet dry cycles than trying to keep it perpetually moist.

When there is mulch over the rootzone of a plant it can cause a myriad of confounders that lead to poor plant health. For example bacteria that live in the seam between the soil and mulch can rob nitrogen from the soil that ends up as NH4 (a gas) that just floats off into the atmosphere. Not great. Over time that mulch will indeed break down but it doesn't happen that quickly.

People put mulch where they DON'T want things to grow.

Crust is your friend.

Ya know PeeJay, there are many reasons I flutter around your flame, primary among them being your amazing way of pounding that point home. You brought Cola Monster for reinforcements. Brilliant play PeeJay. As soon as I read his name the grow flashed in my memory before the pictures came into view and "Of Course!" screamed through my head.

Excellent points all around. I shall adjust the mulch layers on my pots. Considering that the pots are all root zone that would mean removing it. Under my mulch layer is a top dressing of those whole foods you refer too.

PeeJay, part of what I wanted to do with the leaf mulch layer was to introduce those local leaves into the mix as well as the microbes actively digesting those leaves now. Even as I type that I realize that that attitude is one best applied to an outdoor patch of ground.

Ok. Point well made. Thank you PeeJay. I really like working with you. :kisstwo:

Am I ever going to get to bed?

PeeJay, just so you get the heads up, I'm going to do some research today on mulching before I make any moves with my pots. My no-till has had a bed of mulch covering most of the surface from the beginning and I'm telling you, that soil is unbelievably rich. I have to believe that the mulch degrading on the surface has some effect to create this rich space that my plants are lucky enough to grow roots in.

I hear your arguments and you make compelling points, but I have this nagging thought that the trees in the forests and in our lawns didn't get that memo about not mulching over the root zone, so there must be more to this story. I want to get more of that story from my own research. This conversation is ongoing.

Laughed so hard I had to take my glasses off. You're welcome. Careful, your girls might be peeking. :battingeyelashes:

We're overgrown kids who play in the dirt and spend all day trying to make each other laugh as we study our asses off to get even better at the craft.

Why isn't everyone doing this? LOL!

Some people unfortunately don't know how to enjoy the simple things in life anymore, NOT IN THIS HOUSE OHHHHHHH HELLLLLLLLL NOOOOOOO. HAHAHAHAHA

I see we have some transplanting to do today. :yahoo:

MULCH

I did a bit of reading on mulching this morning and came away feeling pretty good about what I've done instinctively with the pots. I did take the advice to make sure it was pulled away from the stem, to prevent rot. The particulate matter and organic makeup of the mulch I mixed up offers a steady supply of nutrients as it breaks down, adding to the stability of the matrix and supplying a steady food supply for my worm community. My mulch will stay put on my pots.

I'm including a link to a rather comprehensive article on mulches. This article is geared to landscaping mulches, but the fundamental principles still apply.

How To Mulch Around Plants Properly

Everyone got some special attention. Only some got photographed. Just pulling the mulch away from the Strawberry Blue stem had me brushing up against the plant and my fingers smell soooo gooood that it's driving me to distraction! LOL!

While I had the Afghanis out I did a bit of undercarriage defoliation.

Of course we have this beautiful top, so lots of play possibilities. :cheesygrinsmiley:

There are, of course, other posts to come. I'm going to make myself stop everything else after completing my gardening chores and do my Callanetics session BEFORE I finish posting. Two days in a row I've put them off as I got caught up in the rush of the newness of posting in increments - a practice you can count on me to continue using. This is so much more organic and me guys, it makes me giggle and laugh all day long. :laughtwo:

So let me take this moment to encourage you to continue on our quest to fill the world to overflowing with joy. Get out there troops. Share and then share some more. You all should be developing reputations by now for mellowness, a trait we all share anyway, since we stay baked at every opportunity, which reminds me that I haven't had either a morning brownie or my wake-n-bake yet. How wrong is that? LOL!

:ciao:

Have an amazing day sue :byebye::hugs:

Ooooo

Let's start a thread. Open it up to anyone and everyone who wants to let us follow their Dark Devil Auto grow. Let it run indefinitely to collect data. I'll get it all set up and figure out how to promote it, if necessary. I'm just getting my feet under me with this new posting rhythm, but within the next week. What do you say?
