The Hempire Strikes Back!

I feel a bit differently cannaruss. I kind of like the idea of seeds costing a bit. Each one has so much potential to grow into a beautiful plant. It could produce my new favorite herb. I could clone it indefinitely, or make my own seeds from it. I don't mind if it costs $20 as long as the genetics are good, and the company I'm dealing with is cool and adds a touch of class to the exchange. Seeds are one of the cheapest aspects of my grow. I spend hundreds of dollars every month on electricity and grow supplies. And that's nothing compared to the time I put in working on this hobby and thinking about it. Unlike expenses of power bills, fertilizer, amendments and ph control, ballasts, bulbs, pumps, fans, timers, pots, soil, perlite, carbon filters, and all the other expensive boring stuff I keep having to buy, every seed order is like Christmas shopping for myself and feels like money well spent. I just make sure to try and deal with classy seedbanks. The ripoff ones, and the ones with attitude problems, really deserve to go out of business ASAP and I'll be happy to help speed them on their way if I can. A seed is like a dream in a tiny package- bigger than it seems.
So there's a kind of opposing rant to your rant.
I do hate sleazy seedbanks though. I'll do what I can to sabotage their reps whenever I can.

Well i thought it bout time to throw up some pictures (plus it will help me keep track of the clones)
First up is my Sour D mother she looks a little rough but she's good and just got up potted tonight.

Next up is the huckleberry and she's definitely grown since last time i took her picture, she's doing really well now that she finally took off lol

And now for the cuttings i took tonight this is more for me then the update, need to keep track of dates better lol. I took 3 from the Sour d and 3 from the huckleberry.

What technique do you use when you up pot a hempy?
I try to float them out by flooding them.... but I'm always on the hunt for better methods.

Well when it comes to me upotting i probably don't do it the best way but if you must know lol. Usually by the time i think i should up pot from a 2L the roots are slightly rootbound i guess so they keep their form so i grab the stalk and wiggle/pull it till it comes up a couple inches then I grab the 2L by the sides and roll it gentle between my hands then after that it pulls free easy. Then i just put a bit of perlite in the new hempy (after rinsing it ofcourse) and plop the plant in and add more perlite if needed. Might not be the most efficient but it works for me. Hope my rant made sense too btw lol.

Makes perfect sense to a fellow 2L hempy grower.
Thanks!

I only really up pot when i notice they are taking more water then normal which tells me the roots have taken up most the space in the 2L and in this case the sour d went from needing water every 3-4days to she would be dried out the day after a watering so ya it was time lol.

I dropped from a 4day cycle to a 3day. I might suspect a move to a 2day cycle will be in my near future.... especially when summer kicks in.

I've got clones and seeds in 2Ls that I'll repot to Osmo fed when they get some roots.... so up potting techniques are catching my eye at the moment. I suspect my little girls coming out of clone or seed mode will basically be bare root up potted.
That one of the drawbacks of using Osmo... you can't do a one pot grow. Meh.

You have very legitimate points. I just feel like they could sell more if they were cheaper instead of just getting one seed of each and hoping that it makes it. Its true about how much is invested in all the other stuff we get. Lord, i could never count it all up lol. But yeah, fair statements Weasel, i was just a little pissy that day cause im on a little bit of a budget and the prices were just giving me a migraine. Living somewhere that still doesnt legalize it just makes it worse sometimes, its a struggle staying on the down low when people two states over can dance out in their yard with a clone in each hand lol. My rants about seeds are over, there are some really good people out there selling good quality stuff and its worth the price. My hats off to those who put in the hard work breeding and making stable seeds for us to enjoy. Happy growing to you all!!

When it comes to 2L i have found that if you wanna stay in the 2L the whole grow a 3-4 week veg (for clones) is the most you should expect before throwing them in flower. If you try for a longer veg it may cause some rootbound issues, but that's kinda to be expected from such a small container lol.

Looking good my perlite lovin brother. Cant wait to see some Huckleberry buds growing for ya. How is the huck mother doing? Glad you feel better man. Everybodys got the flu around my neck of the woods. Keep up the good work :passitleft:

Hey brother good to see your still around! That huckleberry is doing good nice and compact. I can't wait to smoke it lol that will be a bit from now tho lol. Tis the season for colds eh? Lol.

I don't sit on the calendar to judge veg time... it's much more of a size/shape driven process... and when I say I don't 'sit on the calendar', what I mean is that I don't even reference any previous dates until I harvest.
Gawd I'm lazy!
Sometimes I wonder what could come out of my garden if I wasn't so damn lazy... but then I get lazy and go smoke a bowl.

I dont exactly watch the calander its more a rough estimate but i get ya lol. Any time i get lazy bad things happen in the garden so i can't afford the luxury of laziness lol wish i could though.

Ya know.... I have no idea why my garden doesn't usually give me any bumps in life. There are bugs everywhere down here... nasty bugs that can destroy a plant in a day. Heat and humidity are hell.
hmmm...
Now that I ponder it a bit, perhaps it's mostly in design... I dunno. I'll just count my lucky stars, shake my head in confusion a bit, and let the world rotate away.

I know I've been spouting words of love for the 2L format lately, but I'm gonna do it again.... sorry.
My larger diameter pots have been overkill.... it's become quite obvious as my experience with the 2Ls grows. I just don't grow plants big enough to need pots that wide. The 2Ls might have tight roots when I chop, but not so tight that I feel they've moved into significant root bound territory. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that if I pushed too far into root bound territory I'd see rot develop... and that's not happening, so I feel pretty golden.
It's a story we all know well really. We always want to push everything to the max... but things don't exist on our schedules. We put too many plants in a small area and cut overall output. We try to shove the plants full of nutrients when a lesser load will provide a much healthier plant. All the same core issue... pushing things.
Anyway, I feel the 2Ls are just the right size for my world. Plus, the newish round PVC I've been playing with provide a similar footprint with a taller pot.
Yup... luvin 'em. Thanks. Sorry to be repetitive.

You say bigger pots are overkill and thats precisely why I chose to go with 2L in the first place lol. In my space using bigger pots essentially means i can flower one big plant and a couple budsabers, which doesn't leave anyroom for variety and even less room for failure. Sure id love to grow big ole bushes but it's not ideal for my space. I dont mind one bit hearing ya praise 2Ls it makes me happy to see you come around to the idea. You convinced me to go hempy and i pestered you to try 2Ls lol we both came out of it happy. :tokin:

Oh... but you see how damn glacially slow I do everything.
I mean, it's been at least a year since I started 2Ls.

Better late then never tead lol.

I remember back in the day seeing journals on here of SOGs with 2Liters, you know, the ones where you cut all the side branches to all your clones and just grow that budsicle. Its a beautiful thing looking at a 4x4 space crammed with donkeys swaying in the fans, talking about making use of every inch of space in your grow area.
