THC Bomb & WW/Skunk - CFL Hood/Veg HPS/Flower

Congrats on your harvest Sky. Is anyone going to give anymore input on fox-tailing? I'm also interested.

it's just a sativa trait and it means your flowers are still growing strong in deep bloom!

I saw on other threads that it is believed to be caused by heat stress which my girl was heat stressed being about 7" from the hps bulb at some tops.

Long hours at work kept me from giving needed attention sooner. The sugar leaves dried out to crispy and by the time I got to trimming the rest of the buds, it was very difficult to be able to identify what was what. I ended up snipping a lot of pistils because of this trying to get a closer cut. So my trim job clearly suffered. When they're ready to go into jars I will snip them from the stems and try to give them another pass with the pruners.

heat can make a plant exhibit its sativa traits. life is all cause and effect. beautiful buds :)

So I may update my understanding, would Indica dom plants ever fox tail, or is that mostly only sativas? Thanks for sharing BTW!

indica dominant plants can, because they are indica dominant (not pure indica), which means they do have some sativa in them, but it's more likely with a sativa dominant plant.

it's like what we call "race". white people have the potential to acquire dark skin. we are all the same but because of phenotypic variation (where we are growing/adapting and where our ancestors grew/adapted) we decided to create a category called "race".

Sky,

In my experience, I have found that "Foxtailing" is normal with some genetics. Aside from being a bit harder to trim, I have found there is nothing wrong with it. I flowered out the same phenotype at least 4 times in 2012-2013, room temps never going about 78-80, various light distance, and every one foxtailed. While other strains sitting right next to it in same nutrient solution and same light, didn't foxtail.

These are two great example of foxtailing; close up bud pictures from the giant plant below. In the first picture, top left, you can see where I accidentally cut off a foxtail while trimming.

Congratulations on the harvest bro! Did you weigh in the buds when wet?

As for drying and curing, until I can come up with a method I am 100% satisfied, I say try to prolong both processes as long as possible for prime bud appeal and potency:high-five:

I did not weight them wet, but I did last night weigh them as they're mostly dried and I have to leave town for some days and just had to know. I removed some nugz from lasrger stems, but there are still a few that need to be trimmed down. Overall weight now is 286.2 grams which is 10.2 zips. I figure after they lose a bit more moisture and I destem them, I will still have nop less than 8 zips which as far as I casn tell is outstanding for the space of 15" x 30".

I keep the buds in a paper bag that itself is in a shoe box. I hung them for 48 hours after the wash, but the outsides became very dry and crispy, so they been in a paper bag ever since.

Having been separated from my harvest for a week, I come home to my buds in not the best of shape. My room mate left them in the paper bag for just a bit too long and instead of graduating to some jars I collected and washed, he elected to put them into large ziplock bags. I can see after adding a Hygroset II Digital Hygrometer to each bag, moisture levels were not as low as I had originally thought.

The bag on the left weighs 112 grams (4 zips) and bag on right weighs 70 grams (2.5 zips). I also took a jar that had just under a zip with me and am still smoking that. Total recorded weight after all the sampling and mishandling is 182 grams which still is not bad. And seeing as how I only had a small portion of the harvest under my immediate control (once daily), I only have that to gauge the results of the bud washing from.

As stated by AG with his bud washing experience, the nugs are on the airy side. Not to imply lack of density, just that the calyxes spaced out a bit and generally will allow more air movement through the colas which may make it trickier to dry/cure for a novice grower such as myself. I think it may have been this factor that allowed my harvest to get out of my room mate's control a bit. I really hate to be the kid in class whose dog ate his homework, but getting this job and being kidnapped by it's grueling schedule really killed my grow overall. I've made more than my fair share of mistakes, but being taken away from things really added all those downfalls up and further put "the beats" on the experience. Ok, my brief rant has ended.

The trim job is not good by a blind man's standard, but incomplete at best. Left behind leaf material is evident in the smoke, with some tokes, this is very evident. The smells from the jar alternate between a nice mild traditional dank smell to that of fresh produce (similar to fresh broccoli), premature is an adjective that comes to mind when getting that end of the smell. The flavor of the smoke seems to be changing with age and hopefully by the end of this jar (maybe 2 weeks on 2 sets of lungs) I will be treated to a nice unchanging definable flavored smoke. As of now, the traditional homegrown flavor is evident and it does remind me of my younger days when I first met the lovely Mary J.

I have since collected quite a few more pieces of equipment and strains to work with, just gotta find a better spot to grow. I may once again succumb to the want to grow and go another round right here (but I'd use the entire closet, maybe 5'w x 7'h x 30"d), but I truly hope not. The list of liabilities that are attached to this particular spot are many.

To close this journal I will say that I'm very thankful to have been supported by such an awesome group of people. Though botched, especially at the end, I did harvest an immense amount of knowledge and experience that I hope clearly shines through in future grows and harvests. A very special thanks to @TheCapn, @s1ingblade and @African Grower! There have been many others that have helped as well, but those 3 individuals having varying levels of experience with The Capn's Simple Hydroponic grow style have been able to give the most accurate advice and I am 7 zips wiser because of them. I also want to thank everyone that has subbed to my journey, thank you for sharing your knowledge or learning from mine.
