Taxx's Super Lemon Haze Bubble SCROG CFL Cab Grow, 2010

I made a new CFL light fixture and reflector using some PVC piping. Added it to the mix today;

I've added it as a side light and trained the tops to go that way between the hanging 200W and this fixture (260W mixed spectrum).

The stretching has been unreal the last week and a half. Next time I'm not going to veg as long, and run with more plants. But the goal of this grow was two fold, and I've achieved them both;

1) learn the how this plant wants to grow
2) get some clones for next time.

So planted two seeds and took 6 clippings from them a couple days into the flowering light cycle. Well, I just checked on them and they've all successfully rooted. :cheer:

To top if off I -finally- see some hairs coming out of the mini flowers. I was starting to wonder if they'd ever pop out, and here they are! It seems impossible to get a close up on the top of the flower with my camera phone so it's hard to see. Here are some lame attempts and some shots of the area now;

I've had to train the crap out them to keep them at a reasonable height. I'm adding mylar to the back and unlit side this eve. Compare the growth to the photos that were added 6 days ago, keeping in mind that I've pulled, pushed, twisted, yanked, and tied them down a hell of a lot, and you'll see what I mean about the stretching.

I'll also be working with my sidekick this evening to setup a small vegging area to move the clones too until this round is complete. I want to keep them stunted for as long as I can so I don't have them vegging for another 6 weeks until this batch is done. We'll see what I can come up with. One of the clones will be planted in soil as a mother as well - just need to figure out where to keep her.

All in all - great success for this update.

Modified the grow container today by adding another drain to it right near the top. I did this so I could add more nutrient solution to the res without worrying about my existing drain not draining it fast enough, and end up having water all over my floor. Before I did this I had to top up the res every day, sometimes every other if I was being lazy, to ensure there was enough water to sufficiently soak the medium.

After the mod I added another 5 gallons of nutes to the res. After 5 manual tests of 1m15s running time of the pump, it appears to have worked as expected. It tops out about 1.5" from the top, which is just above the 2nd drain. My automated pump only run for 1m, but I wanted to test it with a longer time to give me some wiggle room in case something unexpected happens with the drain (rocks shifting or something else could interfere with the drain flow.

So now I can just do a res change once a week of 10 gallons of nutes, and likely not have to top it up during the week. That'll make things easier.

Oh, I forgot to mention - last res change when I had it emptied I noticed some roots coming out the bottom of the drain! That's a pretty long root - at least 3.5ft. I don't mind since I have 2 air stones in my res, and a small pump that's always on, to keep the res mixed and oxygenated.

These plants are still stretching, but I think they're slowing down a bit (thank flying spaghetti monster) because they were getting very unruly. The flowers seem to be growing more now too, which also makes me think they're done stretching. It's fun time!

One the plants kicked the bucket. It's a long, shameful story, but lets just say that make sure the settings on your timer are confirmed after getting help from others. -grumble- The good news is that that the ones that croaked was a weakling anyway. It's little comfort..

Anyway, the remaining lady is doing well - the buds are gaining some size to them and are progressing nicely. I'm starting to get some wilted leaves, but I'm going to give it a couple days before doing anything about it considering the mishap.

Pictures soon.

Oh yes, I also picked up a closet organizer type thing from one of the large box stores to use as a Veg closet. It ran me 50 bones. I was actually on my way to purchase a lot of PVC piping and connectors to make a 3x3x6' PVC frame that I was going to build to make a veg closet when I thought about using one of the closet organizers instead. I just wrapped the thing in Mylar before putting the black cover on it. I just need to cut out a piece of tarp to cover the top and the side that it opens on to make it light proof, but it's not a big deal yet as there are only clones in there running on 24 hours of light.

I also bought a small HEPA air filter and placed in there as well, along with a 9" fan. Neither are very powerful, but they move the air around and the HEPA filter will hopefully help eliminate any 'bad guys' that make their way into the environment.

Anywho - when there's more to share on that front, I will.

Day 34 of flower.

Res change today. I decided I'm need to top the res off more often. The nute level lasts a week, but I think they're using all the goods before it's time to refresh. So instead of doing a fill and flush once a week I'm going to top it up mid-week with a couple gallons of fresh nutes. They seem to slow down as the week wears on. (Another) Lesson learned.

Anywho - photo time.

Another 4 weeks or so - hoping they pack on some heft.

That's all folks.

Mistakes? I've made a few.

Thanks j4s2u0. I'm surprised she's still being nice enough to show me flowers considering the abuse I've put her through.

So let's summarize my numerous mistakes for sh!ts n' giggles.

- Had the lights too far away from my seedlings at the start which made them stretch.
- Gave them nuts too early.
- Put them in a cab that didn't have sufficient circulation so the heat was far too high.
- The res in the cab in turn got too hot.
- The res was very hard to change, so I abused them poor seedling with a crappy nute mixture.
- Burnt the top of a plant with a light falling on it.
- Raised the lights to promote stretching when flipping to flower. As if they needed the help! ;)
- The plants hept growing into my lights, causing some burn issues on the leaves.
- Had a Cal/Mag deficiency that took me a while to diagnose.
- Had my pump timer get fiddled with and I didn't confirm it was back to 'auto' before leaving the room, which caused me to over react and sacrifice a plant because I thought it was sick when in fact she was only starving.
- Miserable FAIL on the SCROG attempt. I learned from the mistake though, so hopefully I'll get better at it next time.

I'm sure I've forgotten some of the mistakes I've made with my first run, and this isn't over yet. I'm impressed that the plant that remains has pulled through all the abuse I've given it. My expectation on yield is minimal, but no matter, I've learned a lot that will help me with my next grows.

Tick, tock.

Picture time - gonna go snap some shots now. Changed the res the other day.

Had a mishap in my cloner, so all but one kicked the bucket. =( Very unfortunate really, but live and learn. The good news is, if worse comes to worse, I still have 3 seeds from the 5 pack of fems that I bought. I'd prefer not to use them, but it is what it is. One of the clones might have a fighting chance, but we'll see. The issue was they dried out due to the insides of the cloner moving around. I noticed this morning, and 2 were dead, dead, dead, one was fine, and one was.. well, we'll see.

Pics soon once I take'm and man handle them in photo fixer/resizer/etc.

Thanks for stopping in NuhNugz. I hear ya about the being picky - they've had all sorts of problems, but oddly enough, they're looking the healthiest they've looked for the whole grow during the last 3 weeks or so.

At one point the majority of the under growth had to be removed due to the leaves just browning and falling off, while the new growth and tops were doing fine. Since then it's regrown and looks very, very nice, though it's too late for that area to do anything productive, despite there being numerous bud sites. I'm gong to make butter with all the left overs (which, at this point, seems to be most the plant! hah) so the teeny tiny buds down there will just be added when I stew it up.

I've been using the Ionic Grow, Bloom, and Boost line, combined with some silica and cal/mag. Since adding the silica and cal/mag things have been great. I'm looking forward to using this knowledge next time, combined with a 300W GLH LED for flower, to see what I can pull off one of these.

Did yours want to get super tall? I've tied mine down every which way, and it if was standing straight up I think it would be close to 4.5-5 feet tall. I won't benefit from that, but I'm curious if I need to plan for that type of height for next time. Any insight you have on that would be great. I can't tell if that's normal due to the amount of hiccups I've had with my first grow.

Taxx

it coulda been outa the 2 packs of beans i got from attitude. None of them got very tall. I was also using Lucas. I didn't have any problems with browning leaves ..none of them were worth mothering out (IMHO).

IMHO SLH has been bred to be very specific ... and there wasn't much info on people growing SLH when I tried it.

As a comparison ... my OG wasn't worth a shit until i upped Lucas and add big quantities of cal-mag. Seemed the SLH ... Lucas was too "hot" for them.

SO .. im not some professional grower ...but SLH seemed to lie in the relm of moderate/difficult to grow. Of course ...when you get it dialed in correctly..and you get that one fabulous bean ..i think youd be satisfied.

Gotta remember those guys at the HTCC have probably raised a thousand different phenos of the strain and have the ability to pick the best of the bunch... whereas someone like you and me...we gotta cross our fingers that we get that hella-good bean from scratch. make sense?

The smoke is excellent to say the least ..armoa stellar ... output is shit lol... at least in my instance. Your buds look fantastic.

I can get more from an OG than SLH ..thats nuts. I also noticed many odd twins sprouting from the beans and very irregular leaf patterns...3,5,6,9,11,2 and very strange node growth... knots on knots sort of thing. Its almost like they are using some odd chemicals on their mothers to fem the beans. I dunno. I won't buy SLH beans again. Now if someone gets some monster clone that is proven...id be game to try it again.

I'm not dissing your grow at all. Considering the pain i went through .. I can appreciate how hard you have worked ..and how stressed you probably are/were about the ordeal up to this point.

matter of fact ..mike from growledhydro grew a slh not so long ago ..and it was a freak plant too, but his freak plant was a good producer. I just feel there is something very unstable about the SLH strain.
