Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -
Worm Bin Update
I remembered it was past time to feed the worms. Gathering up this week's supplies, we have
- Rice Hulls
- Malted Barley Grain (I started dumping the mash onto the soil with the tea)
- Really Rotten Bananas (definitely not your typical wife)
- Old Sweet Potato (had some mold going)
- Mineral Dust ( a gift from COorganics when I first started, meant to sprinkle lightly on the worm bin)
The real stars of this meal are these gross bananas. WooHoo!!!
It's only a small bin, so I don't need all those bananas or all that sweet potato. I cut off the moldy parts and some of the remaining and tossed the rest. Mixed in a handful of both rice hulls and malted barley grain and a sprinkling of the mineral dust.
Doesn't that look delicious? It smells of fermentation.
I pulled out the bin and immediately knew something was wrong. No gnats. Uh oh. No worms. I killed the worms! I let it get too dry and there was only one little worm in that whole bin! Crap!
Now this bin is just cold compost. Not what I had in mind.
I stepped back and considered what I'd done, or not done, as the case may be, took a deep breath, forgave myself for doing something so neglectful, and moved on to an improvised backup plan.
I had the paper I'd cut into strips for bedding that had been soaked in warm water and wrung out like a sponge. Then you have to shake it all apart. That part was fun. Pick up a squished bundle to lightly and gently shake it until the strips of paper detach and unfurl. I ended up with this massive stack.
That stack is the bedding in the bin reconstruction.
I dumped the old bin remains on top, buried the prepared food and wet it all down real good.
Thankfully I have more worms around the house. See? Not the typical wife at all.
I dug down into my Geo Pot worm bin of leaves and pulled out a couple handfuls of wriggly worms to add to the reconstructed bin. Then I thoroughly watered that bin, because those chopped leaves dry out fast in the fabric pot.
I topped off the reconstructed bin with those leaves with worms and wet it all down again.
There we go. Worms. (Sigh) Redemption. Well, if I keep them alive.
I need to check on a regular basis. Mondays and Thursdays. That works for me.
I'll do my best to keep them alive from here on.
