She IS growing like (a) weed! :thumb:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Coconut/Aloe Drench

** To be used once weekly, without fail.

Per gallon of usable drench:
- 1/4 c fresh young coconut water
- 1/4 c pure aloe vera juice
- 5 ml Agsil

Biweekly add 1/2 tsp TM7 per 5 gal water to this mix.

Microbe Man's Simple Aerated Compost Tea

1 gal water
1/2 c vermicompost or EWC
1 1/2 TBS Blackstrap Molasses
Pinch of sphagnum peat moss

Bubble 36-42 hours at 65-72 degrees F. Strain and drench.

As an alternative you can make a slurry of 10-20% by volume EWC in water and bubble for 24 hours, then simply drench without straining.

Apply one at the beginning of the grow to get the micro herd going strong again and then, if you think she needs it, about 1-2 weeks before full on flowering.

Neem/Kelp Tea for Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

** To be used only once or twice a cycle. If you sprinkle neem meal and kelp meal on the surface at the beginning of the cycle you only need to apply about halfway through. Do this BEFORE lights on.

Bubble in 5 gal water for 24 hours
1/2 c neem seed meal
1/4 c kelp meal

After bubbling add:
1/4 tsp/gal aloe powder
10 ml/gal fulvic acid

This tea is particularly good for lacking soils and can be used at half strength as often as once a week. Occasionally alternate the kelp for alfalfa meal.
Dilute this to make 20 gallons of usable tea.

Out of time now. Dale expects me to spend time with him. :laughtwo:

Don't hesitate to ask any questions. I'll be back later.

What does aloe vera juice do for the soil?

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Here you go Major PITA. This is from my first journal, before I enticed you here with all this joy.

A little treat as we near the end of this journal.

SETTING UP A LOS NO-TILL GARDEN

I'm assuming you have already decided on the location and have determined the pots needed and the necessary lighting and climate requirements. Let's set to work with the other essentials - soil building and maintenance.

I see a series of very methodical steps that can be taken to set up and maintain an organic no till with minimal effort. It's really as easy as 1-2-3-4.

1. Build the soil.
2. Set up a SWICK watering system to spare yourself the frustration of under or over watering
3. Develop a regular plan for amendments and additives using teas, drenches and foliar sprays.
4. Prepare for the next grow

STEP ONE: BUILD THE SOIL
The Basic Clackamas Coots soil mix recipe for growing cannabis (in his own words):

"Equal parts of Sphagnum peat moss, some aeration deal (pumice, rice hulls, lava rock - whatever is sitting in the garage) and finally some mix of humus - my compost, worm castings some black leaf mold I bought from the local 'worm guy'
To each 1 c.f. of this mix I add the following:
1/2 cup organic Neem meal
1/2 cup organic Kelp meal
1/2 cup Crab meal (or Crustacean meal when available - it has Shrimp meal with the Crab meal. It's a local product from the fisheries on the Oregon & Washington Coasts)
4 cups of some minerals - rock dust

After the plant is in the final container I top-dress with my worm castings at 2" or so and then I hit it with Aloe vera juice and Comfrey extract. Or Borage. Or Stinging Nettle. Or Horsetail ferns. Whatever is ready.

The Rock Dust Recipe
4x - Glacial Rock Dust - Canadian Glacial (Gaia Green label)
1x - Bentonite - from the pottery supply store
1x - Oyster Shell Powder - the standard product from San Francisco Bay
1x - Basalt - from Redmond, Oregon (new product at Concentrates - about $18.00) ."

I believe that this recipe allows for some substitutions and that the biggest thing is to stick to the 1/3 SPM, 1/3 aeration, 1/3 humus and the amendments at the specified ratios. I have seen people (including myself) vary the actually "rock dusts" but don't if you can help it, and certainly don't omit the oyster shell flour in place of something else.

Living organic soil is very rewarding to grow in, give it a try, no one has ever looked back after going this route."

My only addition to this would be to add mycorrhizal fungi innoculant to the soil mix in advance of planting, or dust the roots with it before transplanting.

STEP TWO: A WATERING PLAN - SETTING UP THE SWICK
A SWICK is a self watering technique that allows the plants to essentially water themselves. The perlite that fills the reservoir wicks the water up to the pots and the extra 25% increase in aeration material in your soil mix wicks the water up into the soil where the roots can continuously access the ready water supply.

The depth of your reservoir is a personal matter. As long as you can keep the water level 1" to 2" below the bottom of the pot so you're not ever sitting in water you'll be fine. A shallow reservoir simply requires you to keep it topped off with greater diligence than the freedom afforded by a deeper one. Large kitty litter trays work well for this.

STEP THREE: CONTINUOUSLY AMENDING THE SOIL
This is my dream watering schedule. For my grow it wasn't necessary to water from the top once I installed the SWICK system, so this became my plan for drenches.

Water seedlings with coconut water or rainwater only.

The watering/amending schedule is done consistently, regardless of where the plant is in its life cycle.

Two to three waterings a week (basically every other day: I did twice a week)

One enzyme tea watering (measurements for one gallon)
* 1 TBS sprouts, puréed
* 10 ml Fulpower fulvic acid
* 5 ml Agsil

One rainwater watering

One coconut/aloe watering
* 1/4 c fresh, young coconut water
* 1/4 tsp 200x aloe vera powder
* 5 ml Agsil
Repeat indefinitely.

Every three weeks add 1/4 tsp TM7 to 2-1/2 gallons water.

Beginning when there are four nodes, add bio accumulator teas.

With new soil do weekly application of two alternating teas:

#1. 2-3 tsp neem meal + 1-2 tsp kelp bubbled in a half gal water for 24 hrs.
* dilute to make 2.5 gal water
* add 1/4 tsp aloe + 10 ml fulpower per gallon

1/4 tsp of aloe powder is equivalent to 1/4 cup of aloe juice.

#2. Same measurements using alfalfa instead of neem

The estimated minimal cost of beginning this regime:
- $ 15 Malted barley (2.5 pounds; 4 oz/cup)
- $ 22 Coconut Water Powder (1/2 # = 75 gal @ 1/4 c. per gal.)
- $ 22 200x aloe powder
- $ 26 Fulpower (quart)
- $ 14.20 Agsil (pound)
- $ 13 TM7 (100 gm bag)
- $ 13 Neem/karanja (2.5 # = 5-6 cups)
- $ 14.06 Kelp meal (3# = 6 cups)

There are many plant-based amendments that can be used to fill the voids until you can afford to get these items picked up. For example, it's possible to substitute corn meal, molasses, kelp, equisetum, or camomile for plant immunity in place of neem/karanja, although you should eventually purchase them. Camomile in particular is legendary for its immunity properties. Sprouted corn can be substituted for coconut water to supply cytokinins.

Notes on this list of amendments:

- Priority should be given to coconut water, aloe vera juice and kelp meal
- Secondary priority to Fulpower (fulvic acid) and malted barley grain
- Third would be kelp, neem/karanja meal, TM7 and Agsil

STEP FOUR: SETTING UP FOR THE NEXT RUN
When you harvest, simply cut the main stalk above the soil surface and leave it. No need to remove the old root ball. Those old roots will eventually decompose into the soil matrix, leaving an internal network for additional aeration and pathways for nutrients to shuttle to the new roots.

The basic process is to gently move the old mulch to one side, add the top dressing, shift to the other side and repeat, then finish with additional mulch material. You want to dress with 2-4" of good quality vermicompost and any other thing you might want to add, as in some rock dust (granite or limestone are particularly beneficial) or some Yum Yum Mix, like I used.

If you have enough down time, maybe add an ACT or a SST, just for variety and why not? It never hurts to add something different every now and then, as long as it's organic in nature and used in moderation.

That's it. Top dress and water in. Plant and grow.

Easy peasy all the way.

:Namaste:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

What does aloe vera juice do for the soil?

Why use Aloe for growing plants?

#1 Salycilic Acid: Makes aloe an excellent choice for cloning, beating out willow root. Aloe vera contains Salicylic acid, an aspirin-like compound with anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-bacterial properties.

#2 Saponins: Aloe vera includes saponins, soapy substances from the gel that is capable of cleansing and having antiseptic properties. This give you a strong anti-microbial arsenal against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and yeasts.

Coots once stated that if you had to choose between comfrey and aloe, go with aloe. Think about that for a minute. I consider comfrey the king of additives. His point was that aloe "offers enzymes, plant hormones, auxins, PRGs, PGHs, and on and on and ....."

I came across an idea for starting seeds I'm wanting to try. DrZiggy, this sounds right up your alley.

Take a piece of an aloe leaf and filet it open. Lay the seeds right into the gel, set it in a shallow dish, cover with a little water and let it sit for 48 hours. The grower who did this set the butterflied piece of filet on a thin piece of styrofoam that he stuck pins into to hold the filet open. Coolest thing ever! I question the need to soak the seed for 48 hours, but it worked for him. It may be that the gel protects the seed even as it stimulates it's potential for growth. I'm more inclined to go with 24 hrs. I'm also inclined to filet the leaf open, drop the seeds in and close it up. Let it sit 24 hrs and plant.

See what I mean Zig? Didn't that make you want to try it? I need an aloe plant. Tomorrow I'll swing through Lowe's. Maybe I'll get lucky this time. I only have one leaf that I was trying to root, that hasn't done much. Maybe sacrifice it for the common good and replace it with a full plant?

I want to drop a couple seeds on the 20th to go into the second pot in this closet. If I start the process in the morning I can have them planted in cups the following morning. I'm going to research my seeds tonight and find the fastest finisher in the bunch. I need something to keep Dale from trying to purchase any off the street when we run out. We will run out. It's a certainty. It will be the last time that happens.

I did tell him that I won't smoke anything off the street. I mean really? :laughtwo::green_heart:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Blunts are way easie rto roll than joints yeah? :cheesygrinsmiley: :cheesygrinsmiley:

I found it smoked much better. Stayed lit with almost no smoke between inhales. :)

I don't roll joints, because I rarely want to smoke a whole joint. I prefer water pipes, hammers and bongs.

I sat here and smoked that joint alone last night and at one point I remember thinking "This is how it was meant to be." I was wasted. You should have seen me trying to type!

It's not often I can be so indulgent, but it was nice Rad. I took Dale one today that he smoked while I pushed the wheelchair through the neighborhood. Wasted. Blissfully and utterly toasted. I'll have to do that for him more often.

Tonight I think a pipe. More controllable, less waste. Though I love watching the smoke curl through space it drives me a little nuts to watch it drift away. Too many years of lack. You guys are going to help me forget those years, aren't you? How sweet.

I don't understand the confusion. The aloe helps the soil, and by association the plants, resist pathogens detrimental to their continued health and well being. This is a good thing, no?

The confusion is all mine since I don't understand this stuff.
From what I've read, we want beneficial microbes, bacteria, nematodes, fungi, etc. in the soil. So when I hear aloe is anti-microbial and anti-bacterial, it gives me pause. Sort of like taking antibiotics. Yes, they kill some bad bacteria, but they also kill the beneficial bacteria and weaken our immunity. Aloe must be selective and only fight the pathogens while letting all the rest of the micro-herd thrive (??).

Antibiotics are across-the-board killers. A healthy soil community actually protects itself against pathogens in ways we have never imagined. The beneficial bacteria have a different role. The cycle of life and death exists at the microscopic level too. Everything gets recycled.

Aloe vera is one of the top-tier beneficial plants. You can ingest it, apply it to the skin, feed your soil, treat your pets. In gardening alone it can be used as a drench to fortify the soil, as a stimulating preparatory base for germinating seeds, and as a rooting medium for cloning. I add it to every tea or drench, so my pots get aloe twice a week.

Daily Update: Dark Devil Auto - Day 27

It's funny how hard it is for me to keep track of how many days she's been growing. :laughtwo: Day 27 and shooting right up there.

image23625.jpg

image23627.jpg

Wait! What's this I see on the stem? A bit of splitting as she sheds her baby skin?

image23629.jpg

I first saw this happen on nivek's journal. I was so new to it with my first run that I completely missed it. Here she goes nivek, ready to soar! :woohoo:

image23630.jpg

As I was clearing a sight path to document that I moved what I thought was a singular clover stem and discovered it was more than that and had begun to root into the vermicompost top dressing.

image23632.jpg

A little dance of joy! :slide: Is it totally weird that this excites me so?? Nah! You guys should be used to it by now. :laughtwo:

Let's take a close look at those new leaves.....

image23633.jpg

..... and what lies beyond. Whispers of developing blossoms gets my blood pumping like mad! Here we go!!!

image23634.jpg

That extra pot needs a bit of housekeeping.

image23636.jpg

I trimmed the wild mustard leaves back, tore them up and buried them in my Geo Pot leaf mold worm bin. That looks much better.

I was planning on dropping a couple seeds tomorrow, being 4/20 and all, but I keep forgetting my soil is still cooking and I neglected to recharge what's left from last cycle. Instead I dumped the prepared aloe vera juice with a splash of Ful-Power around the Devil.

I gave both pots a quick and hard spray of rainwater to wash in more top dressing and activate the mosquito dunk sprinkles. I need to get the neem meal purchased. Next month for sure. I know with assurance that the neem will, in time, eliminate the gnats altogether, but it can't do that if I don't use it.

image23637.jpg

My tiny closet.

image23638.jpg

Happily growing under this marvelous light.

image23639.jpg

This thing runs wonderfully quiet and keeps the environment in this tiny space at almost perfect conditions. When I upgrade to the tent I'm hoping I can keep it warm enough in there. Of course, I still have all those CFLs to add in. That should help. I think I'll start adding some in tomorrow. She needs more light. Wouldn't you agree Atrain? :laughtwo:

I'm off to be with Dale. I think the only way I'm going to keep him happy and have time to clean the room and get the tent set up is to start getting up earlier and devote so many hours a day to it. The magnitude of the job has me a bit intimidated, but it's one step at a time, one box at a time. It means I have to stop socializing with you all until 3 AM. I'm not sure I can stop doing that. You guys are so addictive. :laughtwo::green_heart:

Have a wonderful day, and I mean that. But you already knew that, didn't you? Fill your day with overflowing joy. I'm going to do the same here.

:Namaste:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

Beautiful update Sue. Everything looks just spectacular as ALWAYS! :cheesygrinsmiley:

That little devil is growing wonderfully fast now huh? Thats what I liked most about my auto's.. well the ones that survived... (Which reminds me I still have that auto Journal up!) is that they grow 3-6 inches, start to shoot some pre-flowers, and then BANG they're a foot and a half tall. It's crazy how aggressive their stretch is.

Our soil is just over a third of the way done though Sue, I know we can make it! :cheesygrinsmiley: Have any ideas of what beans you want to pop? I'm sure you've mentioned it, but I have had far too many concussions and medicate much to often to remember those details :laughtwo:

Keep it up Sue, that light looks right at home in you closet, can't wait to see you set up in a nice big tent! :cheesygrinsmiley:

And yet you still go careening down the mountainside on a suicidal sled! It was great fun though, eh? :laughtwo::green_heart:

I'm planting African Buzz in the High Brix soil and the other LOS pot will be Cheese Candy and Wicked Bag Seed (from our New Year's celebration - the last street crap I plan to ever buy). I still have one more 7 gallon to plant with LOS and haven't decided on which seeds yet.

The two additional LOS pots will be planted with tiers, following DrZiggy's lead, so there'll be two plants in each of them. That African Buzz should be a sight to watch, eh? I'm getting a 20 gallon pot for it.

I'm getting excited Max. :slide:

I do remember that it WAS great fun, definitely worth it, and besides I wore a helmet! :cheesygrinsmiley:

Now I remember you mentioning the Cheese Candy and the Wicked Bag Seed! But that African Buzz will be so fun to follow, SweetSue goes Sativa, the excitement that is to come in these next few months will be overwhelming... We all knew you would fill that tent up with beautiful life! :cheesygrinsmiley:

Hope you have a wonderful day Sue, 4/20 is almost among us! :cheesygrinsmiley:

Re: Sweetsue's Tiny Closet - Second Grow - Sweet Dark Devil & Bomb Berry Bomb - CFL -

I better start exploring options Doc. I was just thinking that myself. Had to reign it back in. There I was thinking "Tent! More Plants!" Before I go adding more than the three pots into that tent I had better get another light, and until I do I would be wise to let the second LOS sit in waiting.

We have some mad money coming in July that we were planning on using to build a grow space, so there's that. Next month is ventilation and filtration, but after that I can funnel all funds to a light. Hmmmm. Back to researching lights. Wasn't I just here recently? :laughtwo:

I still have the CFLs to supplement this run, but at the very least I think another LED panel is called for before I start running wild. I have to run some numbers and look at the planning sheet.

Thanks for the reality check. You've saved me more than once. I appreciate it.
